Personally, I think a Lackey comp, as far as the expectations vs. actual performance (not WAR numbers, posters) -- for such a high-priced investment at the time -- is Dice K. Both had their moments and helped win rings; both had their injured years where they didn't help much at all. Overall? Depends on one's definition of value and worth (at least Dice K seemed like a decent guy to root for).

Yes, and I've felt that way and said so, since the Mookie trade. It's still a shock that ownership decided not to pay market value to keep the Red Sox' best homegrown Hall of Famer in his prime the past 50 years in Boston. It was and will always be an affront to the loyal fans of New England, a message that clearly shows owners no longer committed to fielding the best entertainment product possible. Fiscal limits be damned -- fan favorites connect customers to the show, and make it more fun to follow good guys their kids can grow up rooting for. And those kids are the core of sustained interest in a sports team... SELL.

A guy worth discussing. My first reaction was comparing him to righty power hitters the Sox once recruited like Jack Clark or Andre Dawson, when they were cooked. But Teoscar is only 31 (Clark and Dawson were still stars at 31, back when 31 was older than it is now, with modern training/arthoscopy/nutrition). Teoscar is a two-time Silver Slugger whose Similar Batters on bb-ref include ex-Red Sox Tony Conigliaro, Hunter Renfroe and Yoenis Cespedes. And THern hasn't had the pleasure of hitting in Fenway Park for 81 games a season. See how optimistic a poster can be in the dread of winter?

Unless the pitcher has a really good arm, then they could convert him to shortstop in the minors, and not trade him for pitching.

My favorite was "The Hunt" where some old-timer and his loyal dog hike through the afterlife (the raccoon won) looking for a place where they're welcome. The guy wisely stayed away from the gate where fake St. Pete refused his dog entry. They finally reach the real heaven, where a World Series isn't guaranteed every year, but the front office is actually sincere about building a roster for sustained contention...

For the projections of what it will cost for Giolito, I'd rather just sign both Lorenzen and Manaea. None of them are that good, but might as well double your chances of one being good -- or at least eating some innings. As for trades, all the big names left -- Bieber, Cease, Burnes -- had metrics pointing down last year. For the complete overhaul needed, I'd go big on Framber, if available (not trading Casas) -- Astros will want pitching back, so the Sox won't get him, anyway. -
Maybe. But if it's true that Breslow might talk to the press again in January, then all we're really left with is Sam Kennedy, in the line of liar. Brez may be realizing that the market once again has exceeded any spending limits from his bosses (stuck in the 20teens). But Brez is also smart enough not to make the same Bloom mistakes and answer frequent media/fan questions with ******** and inanities.

This just in, on the Yankees website aka MLB.com: "Yanks to pivot to Plan B as Yamamoto heads to Dodgers" ... all the other clubs will pivot to Plan C or Plan D -- except the Red Flops (they'll stick with their sustained Plan F).

If Yo Yama is good as all the big spenders think he's going to be, then keeping him out of the Bronx or Ontario is today's victory for Red Sox Fifth-Best Nation. We'll see what kind of moves the O's without-closer and Rays without-McLan/Glasnow can make, if any, to sustain contention. It's a good thing those Sox prospects don't need thought partners to decipher Breslow's terminology. Just in case, I just went on Amazon and ordered each of them Molecular Physics and Elements of Quantum Chemistry : Introduction to Experiments and Theory Quick book summary: "It covers not only current theoretical approaches but also new developments such as high-resolution two-photon spectroscopy, ultrashort pulse spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, optical investigation of single molecules in condensed phase, electroluminescence, and light-emitting diodes." That should cover it. -

Today there is still hope in the Nation. No Yamamoto in the AL East means the fifth-best team still has a chance to finish fourth -- or even third -- if proper changes are made soon. Now is Brez Time: time to sign some starting pitchers, and swing some serious deals; all the Red Sox need are a second baseman who can hit and field, plus 57 home runs that they had from Turner, Duvall and Verdugo (depending on how many HRs are hit by O'Neill in the dozens of games he'll play). The big splash has to come from a blockbuster trade that the front office of countless veteran execs and VPs have been cooking up for a month now... Let's GO!!! -
Haven't we been saying that since Bloom sent Graterol back after confusing his medicals with a stanza of "Beowulf"? Just give us something, Red Sox, in a trade that doesn't always have to include a starting big league outfielder... There's got to be some arms available that are more than appetizers (though if it has to be just a few lopped limbs of calamari, at least throw in a few hot cherry peppers).

I don't know if Cora would ok trading Pivetta. If it's true that AC has other clubs interested in paying him Counsell dough, then maybe no other player is responsible for upping his profile so much. Remember, when the Sox had the hottest team at the start of last summer, it was Pivetta as Bulk Guy who was making Cora's opener rotation succeed.
