  1. I've said it many times; I have to ensure Raffy gets up in the first inning. For modern Red Sox starting rotations, first-strike instant leads are too important to not try for every game. As for Casas, with his keen eye and how he works the count, I can envision some modern manager trying him as a Schwarber-type leadoff batter. Personally, I'd prefer another OBP man in front of him, to optimize Tris' run-producing potential.
  2. For all his Zoom calls over the years, he never once exposed any colleague on his screen to germs. Not sure about viruses, but zero communicable diseases...
  3. Curly could never control himself in the clutch, especially when the organist played ''Three Blind Mice." He had that nasty habit with the cheese, and threw his weight around on too many grounders. Yet, the franchise gave him the big extension to finish his career as a Stooge, because he was the fan favorite.
  4. It's all conjecture, but reducing payroll or "clearing the books" isn't a novel strategy before a company sale. Some may question the Devers extension, but there has to be some star power to make the laundry more attractive than just jerseys on hangers.
  5. Great point, and even if Henry is determined to win cheap, there comes a point when lost public trust has to damage the brand. Though maybe he doesn't care too much if he's planning on selling soon...
  6. Branch Rickey was played by Indiana Jones... ... and I think Dombrowski plays Jimmy Stewart in the MLB
  7. Ignore what we all know he did or didn't do the past four years, and see how his firing may be perceived by owners as the best PR move going forward. For three months, it raised expectations across Red Sox Nation that big changes were actually in store. But by now we know: it was just cheaper than signing better players at fair market value. Don't worry, they'll allow Breslow to make a splish soon to restore a glimmer of hope... something like one of the Three Stooges shooting a hole in the canoe to let the water leak out.
  8. There's no doubt Henry wanted to mirror the Tampa Bay Way when he hired Bloom. And we know the mighty Rays have made the playoffs the past five years in a row, while the Sox mostly flopped. But it is worth noting that Chaim Bloom's last season in Tampa was 2019, and before that, the Rays missed the postseason in seven of the previous eight years he was in their front office. So maybe part of the problem was that the Sox just hired the wrong exec to transform them into TBNorth... (which Henry might admit if he ever talks to the media or public again).
  9. And I disagree with posters who convince themselves any certain offseason is devoid of talent, and the Sox must be waiting for a better crop to choose from, next winter. This Boston roster is so bad -- and has been on the pitching staff since Bloom took over -- that every offseason has players available that can help improve the Red Sox. They just choose not to invest. As far as pretending a window for contention will open as soon as the mighty prospects arrive in '25 or '26... is it really reasonable to expect Teel to instantly become a Rutschman-type leader behind the plate? Mayer to morph into Corey Seager his first year? Anthony to duplicate Bellinger's rookie stardom? All three may become or surpass such comps, but it may take half a decade for any of them to mature into stars (by then, maybe for other teams).
  10. It would be easier if they'd admit they won't Pay Guys. It has to be better PR if a team is honest with its fans. Moon once noted even the Houston Astros leveled with fans back when they were, uh... armor-plating their team bus. And everyone survived. Massachusetts doesn't even have open carry...
  11. Luplow riled up Todd, who always gave his sister Lisa noogies on Saturday Night Live.
  12. Last line left off a few words: "Further additions appear more likely to the middle or back of the rotation to BEFUDDLE FANS' depth PERCEPTIONS and EXPLOIT THEIR GULLIBILTY."
  13. An Urshela or Eduardo Nunez makes total sense to carry on a contender's roster... ... but why in the world would a tank team want to pay market rate for a decent player when it can find someone serviceable at minimum wage off waiver wires -- or in the minors for another doormat (like Pablo on the A's last year). Urshela made upwards of $8M last year, which could mean Boston has to clear around 10 replacement players making league minimum just to sign him.
  14. One report yesterday (McCaffrey?) said the Sox refuse to sign another outfielder for more than two years because they plan on relying on Anthony and Rafaela in the near future. It explained that Teoscar wanted three years, so pivoted to one for $23.5M from LA for almost the same amount that Boston offered him for two ($28M). This also shows why Gurriel wasn't coming to Fenway (he got three for $44M to stay with the NL champs). If the reporter has some kind of source and is not just guessing like the rest of us, maybe it's reassuring that Anthony and Rafaela won't be traded... which also makes a guy like Duran or even Yoshida expendable. We'll see how many years Soler and Duvall wind up with; obviously they'll also want more than two, which their careers make a case for... at least as old DHs.
  15. This explains everything! Tom Werner wasn't lying last fall, after all. What he really meant was that the Red Sox would fully choke the entire offseason by not acquiring any good pitchers to upgrade the starting rotation.
  16. Bellhorn's note on snowballing reminds that the Sox did their worst to allow the Yankees to pass them at last year's finish line. Both were snowed in at the end. To dig out, Boston's owners replaced a plastic shovel with a metal one. New York bought a brand new star-powered snow blower. And who's honking that horn? Why, it's the Dodgers, driving by in a hummer with a giant plow -- waving buh-bye.
  17. The brightest of bulbs in the spinning disco ball? These are poison ivy leaguers you besmirch! We're their suckers. They're just a bunch of comedians looking over their Red Sox Nation audience and repeating George Carlin's mantra: "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."
  18. This calls for more mediocrity -- the wards of this club can't possibly afford the luxury of paying taxes! Good pitching won't make them good, but just wait until they're good enough to spend on good pitching...
  19. Can Brez or AC convince Henry to chip in some, to make sure Snell goes to NY?
  20. Not sure it fits a club that has gone from the Interest Kings to the Disinterested Jack-offs.
  21. If you're rich and shopping for a baseball franchise, a decent roster of MLB players with good potential in the minors have to be more attractive than mediocrity in the majors and a pathetic paucity of pitching throughout the entire system. The worst post of the day for me was Moon's list of our top 20 pitching prospects. Back-end starters and bullpen set-up men is no way to go through life, son.
  22. The commish and his bosses will make sure to only approve a new buyer committed to restoring the Red Sox to MLB flagship status, because Boston's popularity tied to its success means more money in all their pockets. There was some controversy the last time the Sox were sold connected to such a notion.
  23. I'd still take Freddie in the outfield today over some of the bumble fumblers they've paraded out there in Red Sox jerseys the past four years (including any JDs who tripped over a bag and never made it).
  24. But at least the Boston fans still have the Bs and Cs.
