  1. ...and put fannies in the seats, if performance is less than desired.
  2. But at least arbitration offers fairly just rewards. In the NFL, this scenario is far worse--little guaranteed money, and no arbitration money during the most productive years (average NFL career is between 2.5-3 years) and, of course, a hard cap. If I were this Oklahoma quarterback, I would stick with the Oakland A's offer.
  3. It sounds like he's a starter, right? Who will be used, I assume, as a reliever. If he gets a lot of ground balls, the k's mean less. One thing about him is that he's big 6-3 250 pounds. EDIT: another site lists him at 6-4 186. (ha) I wonder which one will show up in camp??
  4. I suspect, Kimbrel will end up with a 3 or 4 year deal rather than the 6 (100 mill.) he wants. If it's 3, he probably comes back to the fold. Of course, with his price-tag taking a hit, more teams will enter the market. I will say this about him--he's one of the strongest pitchers on our staff, and that may be the thinking behind trying to re-sign him (if the price is right) I wonder what he does if he gets basically equal offers from 2-3 teams. Does he choose the NL over the AL, Boston over Toronto say, or a more personally appealing location for him over Boston. Also, would coming back here remind him too much of his relative low worth?
  5. According to MLB News, it's a 21 million contract, 10 this year and 11 next--with a team option 3rd year. I guess we weren't that interested.
  6. If we're headed toward resting our starters more this year than last, then picking up Gray might work out. My only doubt is including Chavez... in a way, I want to see him go for something, but what Chavez is capable of is still an open question--with me.
  7. Well, I'm not into Rotisserie. What I'm thinking is that Harper and Machado, like so many many big free agent sluggers before them, are most certainly going to be overpaid--and overpaying is always a disadvantage even to NY, LA, and Boston. We just did this stupid thing 4-5 years ago and got almost nothing but headaches in return for our lavish bucks. The examples are almost as long as the number of long, stupendously expensive, contracts.
  8. My offer would be 8 years for 255 million. If the answer is "no" then I wait till the end of arbitration, and make one more sensible offer. If the answer is "no" then we sign one or two top free agents with all that cash and continue our success story without him. (Mookie is terrific in many ways but I doubt his durability--could be wrong about it, but I can't see him power hitting or DH-ing in old age as in Ted Williams and David Ortiz)
  9. Of course, the only problem with a trade is... that the production of our latest traded-for-relievers turned out to be less than pea-sized.
  10. Would Tulo switch to second-base? That was my first thought... we're looking at him as a solid backup for Pedey.
  11. It looks like Erasmo Ramirez will also be signed to a minor league deal. One thing these 4 relief pitcher signings means to me is that at best we will only sign one free agent reliever.
  12. If so, that strengthens my argument. So, you have 35 for Betts, 30 for Price, 30 for Sale. That's about 42% of your salary cap goal on three players--with Betts being the only one who's worth his pay.
  13. Mike Trout might serve that "pay to see" function just as well or better. I know he's no show-man but he has a huge following. But Bett's cost must certainly have a lot to do with Sale. Can you have Betts at 33 million per year and Sale at 25? And of course Price at 30. That's close to 40% of your desired cap on 3 players.
  14. Beeks for Eovaldi was the only one I could recall. The others went under my radar even at the time, because Beeks was the only one I really knew anything about. I guess Mets pitchers are always of interest to me. But I have to learn more about Chavez before I know his current and future worth. I know he's a problem, but he is young.
  15. That would be cool. It would be fun to dissect our first real trade in some time.
  16. The only soon-move that I can see happening is for a relief pitcher. I think once one top guy goes, all the topsters go, and that could happen at any moment. Once the price is set, we either jump, or bide our time and hustle up someone who can be a piece of our relief puzzle.
  17. I'm hearing that Kimbrel is now back under consideration... no doubt this comes after the Kelly signing.
  18. This trade would be made, I think. And I assume Gsellman is under control for several years. He's 25 and has shown lots of promise, but has a WAR of .2 From what I know, I would make this move. G might make a great 5th or 6th starter. (I don't know if he has any past injuries which are bringing down his projected WAR)
  19. I think Devers could soon become the ideal 5th slot hitter, and believe he will. The only question is: will he improve his defense to the make him a solid choice at third base over the next 10 years. I want this to happen because starters to me should have a stable position--one they own and hold onto, as in all-star third baseman.
  20. I think it would, but it depends how Chavis is valued by both the Mets and the Sox.
  21. It seems to me that we have no ideal lead-off hitter and no ideal 5th hitter. We have twos and threes, one fourth, and lots of 6-9 types. This missing ideal 1 and 5 has been an almost ongoing problem for a couple decades it seems--or longer. But, of course, since other teams have worse problems, it matters not. Last season we hit .268 (unimpressive for a sox team) but the MLB average hitter hit .248 and the Yanks hit .249. so, this problem is more in theory than anything. Also, I think that my idea of a lead-off hitter is now outdated unfortunately in an age when almost all hitters refuse to moderate their swing and approach to fit the need. (I guess some would argue for Pedroia, but he's more like a 2 or 7 hitter to me)
  22. The Brewers need a starter and they have Josh Hader and a prospect or two to offer. But they might see Rick as a one year rental and pass.
  23. I have no doubts after doing further reading that Porcello, Bogaertz, (last year of contracts), and Bradley are being offered... this in order to avoid multiplying salary cap penalties, and to set up an ongoing competive team (as the Patriots always do). So, I'm thinking DD is looking for productive trades that will both bolster the team (without 1-3 of these players) and our prospect situation.
  24. It sounds like slightly more than that, but this might be the press "breaking story" thing. I see Scott has been picked up... one more reason to sign a lefty.
  25. This 100 page overlapping threads thing is a big problem, esp if you've been away for awhile or are new to the board. But I think the reason for it is that only bigger boards can sustain multiple specific and current threads. But I guess the rule for posters is to start a thread if it seems called for, and if it quickly lapses, it may have been a poor idea, or that there wasn't enough interest from a board with a limited number of posters. Anyhow, it's all touch and go.
