Also, this year more than any I’ve seen in a while there’s almost no consensus at the top of the draft. Literally a guy who might go 8th could go 1. someone the Sox like and have ranked top 10 is going to fall to them at 15. There are a lot of high school short stops ranked 8-14. Of course they might not be the top guy on the Sox board when their pick comes around but I can just hear the complaining now.

These guys won’t be on your team for 3-5 years in most cases. Team needs will be completely different at that point. You draft best player available, and that rings more true in baseball than any other sport.

I’m sorry, I could not disagree with a take more than this. why is Raffy a bad defender? Throws and range, he doesn’t need range at 1b, and he doesn’t have to worry about throwing it all the way over from 3B to 1b. He actually has good hands and a lot of the tools that would make him a good 1b. moving players from 3B to 1b is actually one of the most common transitions in baseball, and teams to do it to preserve players and keep them on the field. and picking someone to fire if he gets hurt? This is real life not a video game. Raffy could get hurt tomorrow at DH, Casas got hurt running the bases. Anyone can get hurt anywhere at anytime. That’s just a horrible ideal. To fire someone based on one arbitrary video game ideal

That’s not what I got from them at all. The Sox have been very adamant about those guys playing everyday. They’re not calling them up until they have an everyday position. They’re also not going to call them up and simultaneously ask them to play a new position. They’ve specifically said they do not believe in asking a guy to play a new position at the same time as learning to be a big leaguer.

That was a comp pick. Those are the only pics that can be traded and they can only be traded by the team they’re awarded to.

Are you asking me who might be the 1b tomorrow or who should be the 1b? Because those are two different questions. It’s probably easier to answer who shouldn’t be a 1B. I’d place Wong on that list.

Add. I don’t think the Red Sox are going to move Campbell to 1b. That seems to be against their philosophy of player development and breaking young players into the majors. They don’t fundamentally believe in asking a guy to learn and brand new position and learn how to be a big leaguer at the same time. Of course, the Sox may well go this path and just contradict what they’ve said the last year about their top prospects. I wouldn’t completely hate them making an exception and finding a way to work in Mayer and Anthony. It would certainly pay dividends if those guys hit. But I just don’t think they’re going that route.

I’ve thought about this, and I don’t completely disagree with your point. But I do think a lot baseball player operators would. If you go back to the offseason, I think there’s blame pie to go around. But I do see a difference in telling a guy you’re planning to move him to DH after you shop for his replacement and asking him to move to 1B because of an injury, it’s a natural move that a lot of people were calling for before last year. Or at the very least a move to 1B seemed probable at some point in Raffys career. i will say this. If the Red Sox do not plan on keeping Devers there, they shouldn’t ask him to move knowing who he is. That’s unfair. There’s an argument against moving Campbell to 1st, but there’s a compelling case to do so as well. I don’t want the Red Sox spending trade assets to get a 1B. I think the Sox are going to need pitching at the deadline. If they’re ready to move on from Casas, they should find a way to sweet talk him to moving there. And the do him right by keeping him there.

I think any GM, or CBO would make that move. It’s not like Breslow blew out Casas tendon. I think anyone in Breslow position would be asking the same exact thing.

3B to 1B is seemingly a common and easy transition. What made Devers a bad 3B is less relevant at 1B. There’s no real reason to think he couldn’t be a good 1B. He’s being coddled, he might have a legitimate gripe about how the situation was handled this offseason and I defended him then but he’s being coddled. The best permutation for this team going forward involves Devers at 1B. I think it’s only a matter of time, the man who cuts the checks to his 300 million plus just flew 1/2 way across the country to tell him so. Then we can all move on with our lives. Now Devers can be the 1B next year as well. The move should be permanent, regardless of Casas.

Devers has arguably been the worse full time 3B in baseball the past few years. i employ people, if you’re the worse at something im moving your job responsibilities and I have zero remorse. Im sure running a baseball team ain’t the same thing but I’ve learned to always make it about the work. Raffy can’t argue with the play. He can hit but he can’t pick it. I think he has a right to upset with how things were conveyed to him and how they played out. But ultimately he needs to get over it and pick up that 1B glove.

I saw a woman who speaks Spanish give a slightly different interpretation of the Devers interview during a chat with Kevin Millar on Intentional Talk, and of course I had my sons mother look at it to for me. She translates Spanish to English for a living. She agreed with her. effectively Devers said he doesn’t think he’s the kind of person who can just move from position to position. He doesn’t like being jerked around but he also said “but if they tell me to play another position I think im going to do a good job” he sounds like he doesn’t want to move, but he will if they make him. if that is a more accurate translation, then I think once again this thing is being blown out of proportion. And I have to ask, why aren’t they making him? It’s clearly the best move. AND NO the fact that he wasn’t good at 3B doesn’t mean he will suck at 1b. All the things he stunk at over at 3rd wont matter at 1b. I do like how John Henry personally flew out to KC to talk with Devers. Devers is going to move to 1B eventually.

A move from 3B to 1B is very natural. It's not like they're asking him to catch, pitch, or play CF. He's just being difficult. I defended Raffy this winter, and I still feel for him, but it's very disappointing he's unwilling to move. Maybe he holds a grudge against the F.O. but moving to 1B helps every single one of his teammates and is the best team right now.

When Wong went down Narvaez got more playing time and has shown he may be a better option at catcher. If an outfielder goes down the have Anthony, if an infielder goes down they Mayer and Grissom. When pitchers went down they had Dobbins and Fitts step up. First base is seemingly the only position they didn't have great depth at, and to be fair how often do we see infielders move to 1B in season? not that it's terribly common but it's got to be the easiest transition to make. It's not like the Sox lied to Devers about DHing him all year they would have kept him there if Casas didn't go down. Asking Devers to slide to 1B is the type of move every single organization and every single GM in baseball is going to ask a guy like Devers. It's the most natural movement. Devers to 1B make this team so much better, the open spot at DH gives the Red Sox so much flexibility to figure things about between the likes of Yoshida/Grissom or to make a spot for Anthony/Mayer. I don't blame Raffy for being upset, I was one of his biggest defenders during the offseason. But there's zero reason he shouldn't move to 1B, it's easily the best move for the team and one he should jump at if he really wanted to play the infield.
