  1. At this point Craigh or Castillo would have to absolutely demolish eastern league pitching to get called up or trading for. Pergaturoy indeed.
  2. If his defense improves this year at AAA he might be the starting catcher by June/July if Vasquez and or Leon can't hit a lick.
  3. I think Pablo might be Lackey 2.0 The first two years were a disaster but he might come back in the 3rd year and completely redeem himself. Also, if Devers pans out soon we might actually get back good value for Pablo in a trade this offseason. This could also clear out some space for extensions
  4. Thank god! I apologize, I missed some of the conversation in here and would have never thought we'd come to that consensus in here.
  5. I think you may be looking at it the wrong way. We're not trying to say there aren't clutch players but rather point out that what "clutch" actually is, can be very misleading to people. Maintaining your composure while others crumble is still something to be credited for. Some may say that the Falcons choked more than any team in a Super Bowl ever and I think there's truth to that statement. But the Patriots kept their cool, their focus, and maintained their composure. I have zero problem calling David Ortiz a clutch player I just don't think he is mentally or physiologically performing at a higher level there.
  6. I think the Sox go to Rutledge, or Holt in the near term but if they need a 3b for an extended period of time then I could see them going outside the organization and bring a guy in. They obviously wouldn't break the bank for some because Devers is getting closer but I have a hard time seeing any other option long term in 2017 if Pablo isn't the answer.
  7. Choking is a function of not maintaining ones composure. Clutch hitting is a function of maintaining your composure against those who can't.
  8. What if you're a "clutch hitter" but every pitcher you ever got a hit against in those "clutch" situations had a whip, bb/k, h/9, and ERA that was 4 times as worse in those "clutch" situations???
  9. I'd expect Benintendi to slide up into a top 1-3 spot once he is more proven. I have a high level of confidence in him but we've seen rookies start off slow and take time to adjust, even when they've had a SSS of success after their first call up. Pedroia, Bogaerts, Betts, JBJ! We've seen this time and time again. I'm not saying he isn't good enough to hit the ground running but let's not put that pressure on him on opening day.
  10. There are countless ways to adjust the order but I'd be pretty adamant about Pedroia and Betts going 1 and 2
  11. I wouldn't expect much of an uptick in Owens velocity, if any. Velocity usually tops out at a young age, before pitchers even ever put it together. I'd more optimistic of his future if he can harness his control.
  12. If Price is healthy I'm very optimistic about this rotation. Even if he's not 100% his former self I think he's capable, and SHOULD have an overall better season than last year. With the addition of Sale leading the top with a prime Porcello this rotation should be very good. Also, I'm curious to see what Wright and Pomeranz bring. Can Pom pitch a full season of baseball that mirrors his first half last year? maybe he can't, maybe he can. Maybe you write of his slip in performance as fatigue, and perhaps with a full season of starting under his belt he comes in with more endurance this year. Was Stephen Wrights year last year legit? will EROD emerge into what he's capable of? Best case scenario is this rotation is stacked, I don't want to imagine the worse worse case scenario, but even a more realistic worse case scenario is the rotation lacks depth but is top heavy. With a good lineup and a good bullpen I'd still like that teams odds in a playoff run.
  13. I just don't think that's realistic. You need real prospects to land high caliber players. We saw what it took to get Sale, we know they are going to ask for 2 of Benintendi, Devers, Groome and then a couple lower level pieces as well. There's no way we are flipping those guys for elite prospects. I could see us flipping them for the secondary pieces to get Quintana which effectively makes the deal along the lines of Erod/Devers/Groome.
  14. I'm not even sure we can do that. One could argue Quintana could command just as much as Sale possibly even more due to his extra year of control. That aside I think Moncada/Kopech is more valuable that Groome/Devers, so the secondary pieces would have to be more valuable than they were in the Sale trade and we just don't have any. The system is empty. But lets just hope we don't need it to come to that.
  15. I have a hard time believing we could even get a deal done without giving up something from the MLB roster.
  16. Relax, just get the kid some nudey magazines
  17. I was probably against the Sandoval signing more than any other guy. I thought he was in decline and that steep decline would easily make his contract an over pay in money and years. However I'm rooting for the guy now, everyone loves a comeback story. I would bet the farm on him (no pun intended) but I have at least some level of confidence in this man making a comeback this year. A man on a mission can be very dangerous.
  18. That is definitely taken into account when ranking prospects. Often times a player is ranked higher than another player who perhaps has a much higher ceiling but is much further away. Prospects like Espinoza, Groome, and perhaps even Devers have the potential to be cornerstone franchise players but they have higher risk too. While sometimes a prospect gives you a lot more to be excited about he often times also has more ways to NOT get there and flame out.
  19. This is probably the WORST possible example but remember how excited everyone was for Will Middlebrooks? Benintendi is a more pure hitter without the holes so I think he has a much higher ceiling but my point is you never know. But yeah, with a swing that sweet my money is on this kid bring an all star
  20. I have a hard time accepting an older player from another league as a prospect too, but I guess it all boils down to what your definition of a prospect is. A player without any MLB experience carries some level of "prospectidum" Whether they are 19, or 26 and played in Cuba. In terms of Benintendi being a prospect it all comes down to at bats. If you're a young Milber who gets a cup of coffee in August but return to AAA the following year and generally are unproven you are still a prospect. While I'd consider Benintendi more proven than THAT he's still to some degree, small or large, unproven. I know different scouting body's have different measures of what a prospect is but by all means Benintendi is very close to not being one.
  21. I think that's plausible, but even then he could easily have an adjustment period. He'll be 21 at that point and could take anywhere from a week to 2 years to adjust and be a consistent MLBer. That's why I said I think he's at least 2 years off. I do think we could see him at the end of 2018 but I'm not thinking about penciling him into a productive player until 2019. Either way....there's a hole open at 3B for at least 2 years. A hole that I'm hoping Sandoval can fill.
  22. Depth, on both sides of the ball.
  23. I ponder if DD may have in hindsight if he knew how the rest of the season would transpire for Pomeranz. You could make an argument for taking a Pomeranz out of the rotation at this point. Who wouldn't trade a 6th starter swing man for one of the top pitching prospects in the game.
  24. I'd much rather Pablo performs because who plays 3rd if he leaves? And more importantly who would back that guy up? A year ago I'd prefer to ship Pablo out but at this point I'm hoping he can rebound his career. Devers is apx. two years away.
  25. Maybe Groome fell because MLB had a draft day moment and no one knew what to do when they didn't expect him to fall. Often times you already have deals in place with a guy(s) you think will fall to you. It's tough for a GM to blow that up on a guy who perhaps they've spent less time on. When that's the case you risk blowing up your whole draft if you can't sign the guy. That's why some of these players really drop. Sometimes once you fall a few spots you're guaranteed to fall 30 more until you get to a team who has the money to sign you. A perfect example of this was Daz Cameron in 2015.
