  1. We picked in the top 10 twice within three years and walked away with Andrew Benintendi, I can live with that. You look at any team that had multiple picks within a few years in the top ten and they did no better. The Orioles had to take a bust Matt Hobgood to get lucky with Manny Machado. Yes, stars exist in the first round, especially the top ten and it's very lopsided compared to the rest of the draft but it's still about a 25% chance you're drafting an all star. Realistically if your first round pick becomes an everyday major leaguer in any capacity you did a great job drafting. EDIT: Realistically it's probably closer to 10% of top ten picks become all stars where's 25-33% become productive everyday players. I saw a study on it once but I'm too lazy to look it up right now.
  2. Compare the top 10 from the last 20 drafts to the 20th-30th pick. There is a TREMENDOUS difference. Big difference between the first round and the rest of the draft too.
  3. You have to develop major leaguers, you just have to, if you don't it's very hard to field an MLB team. Now with that said, it's important to remember that prospects are assets, and sometimes you trade them for something you need more. I feel kind of bad saying that because these are actual people but this is a business and that is how it plays out. So I'm fine with trading, what worried me was the excess of trading prospects and the long-term ramifications that it will bring. With that said this trade is starting to look much better for the Sox and that has everything to do with Drew being healthy and pitching better.
  4. A trade for Donaldson starts with Devers plus.
  5. Here's a short little video on the Sox signee Flores http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/ben-badler-red-sox-daniel-flores/#V4zJbvyHI0xg4m6C.97
  6. being excited about 16 year olds playing baseball is certainly not for the faint of hearted. As the old saying goes "prospects will break your heart" I enjoy it.
  7. Well that's the name of the game. I think to be a true lover of prospects you have to understand the further away these kids are the more paths they have to lead to failure, however, there's also more upside and more hope as well. It's almost like investing your money in the stock market into a well-diversified portfolio and the international system is one piece of the puzzle that teams use to stock their farm systems. These kids will go to the DSL, the good ones will come stateside after one year and play in the GCL and then they will move on to Lowell of Greenville. The really good ones will skip a level. Rafael Devers moved from the DSL to the GCL in the middle of his first year in the system and skipped Lowell and went straight to Greenville the next. After spending a full season in the DSL Bryan Mata skipped botht the GCL and Lowell and is currently starting in Greenville this year.
  8. I get that, some guys still develop as a SS and move off when they have too. Still, with that many you have to assume they view a few of them as a 3B or 2B right now and develop them there now.
  9. All 16 I believe
  10. Sox just signed Nelfy Abreu, Denny Daza, and Antoni Flores who along with Danny Diaz are all short stops. Sox are cornering the international SS market
  11. Plus I think Longhi has to be added to the 40 man soon as well, and there isn't much space for him on the roster on top of him being a fringe level prospect.
  12. Some teams are limited from going over their cap in previous years but they still get awarded bonus pool money
  13. I'm not sure about that. If we've identified a guy who can help us win a WS this year and Ockimey is the player asked for in return I do t think Dave even blinks...he's gone in my opinion. I like Ockimey but he's several years away and not a sure thing at a position that is relatively easy to fill.
  14. I think both Travis, and Ockimey are ahead of Longhis. He's a long shot as a starting regular and the Sox couldn't sign all their international agreements without trading for bonus pool money. I think it's a good trade that helps in the re-stocking of the system.
  15. Flores and Diaz look like absolute studs to me. It's nice to see the Sox taking steps to replenish the system. I'm assuming more moves to come as it was reported the team wanted to go back to having 2 DSL teams.
  16. It's perfectly legal
  17. Danny Diaz is not to be confused with the Venezuelan SS Denny Daza the Sox are also expected to sign
  18. Perhaps I should have kept that in the prospects thread? It was a trade but not in relation to the deadline and in no way effects the team this year.
  19. Nick Longhi traded to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for international bonus pool space
  20. Today marks the beginning of the 2017/18 international signing period. This pool of talent has been a huge source of prospects as well as MLB talent for the Sox over the years. After being banned from any signings the last year the Sox started off today with a bang. #2 Daniel Flores © 3.1 million #7 Danny Diaz (SS) 1.6 million #35 Antoni Flores (SS) 1.4 million
  21. Teams in our position make major upgrades all the time, it's actually the norm. How often do teams in 1st place grab a bat, a late inning reliever, a starter, and all of whom could be high priced rentals for a run ? There's 6 division leaders, plus everyone else who is in the hunt and they ain't just thinking about winning the division.
  22. I'd like to think of it more as treading water....as in eventually you're going to drown and die. Perhaps they can stay afloat long enough for someone like Devers to arise. I get that they are good on defense, but having a sub .600 OPS equates to being a black hole in the lineup and with the offense down at other positions that really makes them stick out at 3rd. We've seen how much scoring runs has hurt this team at times this year. If there is an upgrade to be made that could put this team over the top, it's at 3B.
  23. By 4th place I meant losing the ALCS. Sorry, I can see how that would be confusing. I'd prefer Devers get a shot too, but if he's not ready....that's a big hole.
  24. Good enough rarely gets you a WS, am I right or am I right? Fatal flaw? Idk, but let's not argue the semantics. A lot of teams about as good as us and arguably better will improve at the deadline. It would have been a shame to trade away the future to end up in 4th place
