While a lot of speed can't be "learned" you can definitely "teach" someone to become faster. Anyone can become faster. Some of us have the genetic capacity to be better runners than others, so some guys will just never be that fast. That doesn't mean they can't be faster. If you focus on explosive strength and have an exercise routine geared towards engaging fast twitch muscle fibers you can add speed/jump etc to your game. Anyone can, some people just have more fast twitch muscle than others who may have more slow twitch.

I think it may be more appropriate to pin Duvall/Duran vs. Renfroe and not JBJ, but yeah the way Duvall looked and Duran is playing that's an obvious answer.

I kind of love what they did with Whitlock and Crawford last night. I wouldn't mind seeing them do that with Whitlock/Houk or Houk/Crawford at the MLB level and give them some innings out of the bullpen vs. bullpen sessions in between short starts. With starting pitchers going less and less seemingly every year the lines between starter/reliever aren't what they used to be. It's not the craziest of ideals.

Another narrative that played out in this thread was Bloom was bad for signing Yoshida to the money he could have had Schwarber for. Right now I'm not sure anyone would take Kyle over Yoshida out there.

Maybe, but someone could have said Yoshida was signed just because they missed out on Suzuki. It's not like Rusney wasn't highly regarded. Baseball America had him ranked #21 at some point.

Absolutely they're very different. My point was that there were some who didn't see it any differently, and because one international free agent failed Yoshida was doomed to fail. Which is just a bad philosophy to have. Free agents are like at bats, just because you swung and missed doesn't mean you are not going to hit the next one out of the park.

It also goes to show you that you can't let the past haunt your future. So much of the narrative was "well what about Rusney, or Dice-K, or all these other guys" Well it's a two way street. So far Yoshida is looking like the next Ichiro, but with a little bit more pop. And, he's a super likeable guy too, if he performs for the long haul he's really going to leave a mark here. It's still early but it looks like the Sox knocked this one out of the park.

I remember suggestion giving a QO to both Nate and Wacha because of how thing our rotation was or at least pick one of the two who they were more comfortable with. I did not feel that anyone else agreed with me, at least in the QO department, which for the record I was right on Nate and it net us a pick but the point is NOBODY wanted these guys 6 months ago, and the season is still young. There can be a huge regression to the mean with them. Both carry risk given their ages and injury history.

Yeah, that's one thing that always bugged me about some people who are very anti-analytics. Not all of them and all the time but you often get the "I don't care what whacky stat you have he doesn't pass the eye test" like.....traditional scouting and stats aren't a zero-sum game, and if anything the best pro scouts are huge proponents of both.

Yes he had a nice average, but you could see it at the plate. He wasn't getting good hits, he hit for ZERO power during that time frame too. I'm not too worried though, but he's in a little funk.

Nick Yorke is not having a great May, hope it's a small sample size and he continues to come roaring back this year. .584 OPS this month.

This is a good point. It would be a different situation if Jansen was having a bad stretch; weeks of bad play looking totally lost night after night then things would be different. No reasonable manager pulls their closer after one game. none.

What Cora did, was the same exact move ANY other good manager would have made. There's a difference between rolling a guy out there who is failing day in and day out for a long period of time and then throwing your closer out there after ONE bad game. Should we bench Raffy if he goes 0-4 one game?

To be fair, I'm not any better. I make unrealistic assumptions about people who say that as well. I just assume they're stupid and don't understand statistics or they're just really old and don't like change. My opinion may be biased as someone who studied finance in academia and extensively studied and used statistics. And I'm fairly certain, when using my rational brain, that these people are in fact not stupid and not always unaccepting of change. We all have our biases, I'm trying to fight mine.

The Irony is, everyone uses analytics. Baseball is a game where every little thing is measured and recorded. Everything is a stat, EVERYTHING. Those people are just uncomfortable with anything that they couldn't read off of a baseball card growing up. At bats, Hits, Average, Doubles, Home Runs, RBIS, SB's. etc.

Yup. Right, because those guys are obviously good pitchers throwing to the wrong guy. Lets for one second assume I'm wrong, you're right, now I have to sing a song.....even advocates of CERA present data that the increase ERA is what? a run or less per game? These 7.08 and 7.11 ERAs are insanely high. It's obviously NOT the catching....these guys suck right now. Kluber and Pivetta Suck.

Without question Dalbecs value isn’t at an all time high, not even close. But it’s also likely not as low as some think it is as well. GMs aren’t like fans and get emotional and let those emotions drive opinions on players like us fans are. Teams know what Bobby D is, they know he has serious issues, they also know there was a MLBer in there at some point and they might see something they think they can fix. Think of it this way. Most fans in here at the end of last season would probably assume Jarren Duran had no value, he still had value because there wasn’t anybody out there who didn’t think he couldn’t do what he was doing now….they just probably figured it a long shot. Long shots happen, now Durran has even more value, but he had something earlier too. Don’t expect a top ten prospect for Bobby. But you get something for him.

I have zero problem moving Houck to the bullpen, but why so quick to give up on Jensen. He’s been money up until this weekend?

Any Manager would have put Jansen in there yesterday. At that point he had looked dominant and blew one save (not much help from the defense). Anyone would have figured it’s best to throw him right back out there and shake it off.

Let’s also keep in mind that $20 in two years will buy you what about $17 million gets you right now. You don’t think someone would give him 4/$17.5 now if he was a free agent? Maybe he takes that number for an extra year. Personally I wouldn’t mind paying a few extra a year for him to keep the contract less than 5 years. Let the 5th year be his final arbitration year. Which might be pretty expensive. $100 might be too hefty, but 5/$85 isn’t crazy.
