  1. Maybe , except for you.
  2. It is kind of hard to relate to any of these guys. Just off the top of my head , I think owners like Kraft , Cuban , Finley, Mara , Jones and even Steinbrenner ( George ) have/had more down to earth personalities that made them interesting and relatable. I could probably think of better examples with time. I guess , like many things , it's just a matter of opinion. I don't want to upset anybody , but I just don't much care for John Henry.
  3. With John Henry as owner , the Sox broke the "curse " and have four championships. He certainly deserves at least part of the credit and our gratitude for that. That said , he does not come across as a very likable , down to earth guy. More like a cold , elitist snob. He made his fortune in hedge fund kind of money management. Not that there is anything wrong with that. For years ,he has soaked the paying fans with sky high ticket and concession prices. He chased the popular vendors away from their spots around Fenway. He seems to be uncomfortable with your average Sox fan. Now he seems to have other priorities. So , while I do appreciate the championships , I have to say that I really don't care much for the guy.
  4. He is a better first baseman than what we have now. Assuming J.D. leaves , the Sox could afford to sign Bell.
  5. I don't like them either. They further diminish the regular season and the pennant race. But they are the reality and teams will probably consider them when making a deadline move.
  6. I think Josh Bell would be a great addition, both for now and the next few years. But there will be competition for him. Sox will have to make the best offer. I'm not sure they want to do that.
  7. It will be interesting to see how the expanded playoffs effect the trade deadline. Only the really bad teams are hopelessly out of contention for at least a shot at a wild card. There might not be too many sellers.
  8. As embarrassing and humiliating as last night's game was , it is still just one loss. There is no need to overreact. You don't change your plan because of any one game. To me , the bigger issue is all of the winnable games that slipped away in the late innings. Mostly due to the rag tag bullpen. And the blame for that is squarely on Sox management.
  9. I am not happy with the way this year has gone , but I never like to give up on a season. I despise having three wild cards . It is money grabbing , gimmicky and diminishes the regular season . There will be playoff teams that don't deserve to be there. But if that is our only shot , then go for it. Don't sell off. Add Josh Bell and a first rate closer or set up man. Then hope for the best. Anything is possible.
  10. The doubleheader with the Yanks is in Houston.
  11. The bullpen is the biggest weakness of this team. And it has been for a while. To this point , it has not been adequately addressed. That is disappointing because a strong bullpen is vital in MLB today.
  12. Brasier is not the worst guy out there. He is you basic ham and egger. A plugger. There will be nights when he gets the job done , but don't count on him too much.
  13. Chris Sale is a big time pitcher. You will see the difference today. All these jabronis complaining about him and his contract will be back on the old bandwagon.
  14. Michael Yaz hit a walk off homer to beat the Brewers last night . A grand slam. Off Josh Hader , no less. Must have been a proud moment for Grandpa.
  15. The old adage: You can never have enough pitching . The Yankees would be wise to fortify their rotation . Their hitting and defense are fine. But hitters are starting to figure out Cortes. And Taillon is overrated. He is not someone you can count on , as was very evident last night.
  16. Closin' ain't easy . The goal is to get the last out without giving up the lead. If you do that , your team wins the ballgame. You did your job. On pretty much a nightly basis , one or more closers fail in that effort. So far , Houck has gotten it done . The Sox are plainly committed to using Whitlock in the rotation , both now and in the future. I still think that Sale would be great in the closer's role. I think he could follow Eck's path to Cooperstown.
  17. Politics is supposed to be taboo on TalkSox . But to be fair , it should go both ways. Too often , it doesn't do that. If there are rules , they should apply to all.
  18. As I have said again and again , Closin' ain't easy. Those last three outs can be tough to get . And when there is a playoff atmosphere , with some 40,000 screaming , beer spilling fans in Yankee Stadium , it can be especially difficult. As the Astros and Presley found out . Certainly a great win for the Yanks.
  19. Agreed. It takes courage to refuse to be coerced and bullied into doing something that you have serious reservations about. There are many examples of athletes missing games for various personal reasons. I hope these guys have the support of Cora , their teammates and Sox management.
  20. I think teams are starting to figure out Nestor Cortes . I don't know about regression , but I don't think he will be nearly as dominant going forward.
  21. This is like taking candy from the proverbial baby.
  22. This is why folks get ulcers and heart attacks over a ball game. The idea that " we " have got to win this one . Houck is hurting " our" team. Try to relax and enjoy it . It's just a game . And I'm a die hard fan. But I have learned how to have fun with it . (That wasn't always the case with me.) I do support Houck and his personal decision. Hopefully , Cora , his teammates and Sox management do as well.
  23. I remember Sandy Koufax missing a World Series game because it was a Jewish holiday. He was pretty much universally respected for it . And rightly so . I'm sure there are other examples as well . People take off days from work for a variety of reasons . Disciplining Houck for it would be worse for team morale than him missing a couple of games. No reason for any resentment or animosity here. Support Houck and his personal decision.
  24. Just kidding with the Benedict Arnold reference . Anyway , Arnold was court martialed , but never actually executed . So , nothing to worry about .
  25. Good for you . Seriously. Some people have a hard time getting there in a long lifetime. Life truly is a gift and a real bowl of cherries. Live and laugh at it all. And always remember , don't ever take the bait.
