  1. The Sox were mathematically eliminated from the division race today. The countdown on the three wild card spots will now begin.
  2. One of the dumbest things dumb managers do is to start a mediocre lefty against the Sox at Fenway. Bubic had about as much chance of success today as my aunt Tillie would have. I wonder what the thought process is with these things ?
  3. I do. The Mets definitely could win it all. I was just tweaking the Yankee fans a bit.
  4. If the team is going to improve , it will require spending money. Bringing back most of this year's cast is not going to do it.
  5. The Yankees will win the division, but it is kind of hard to see how they can beat the Astros , much less the Dodgers. Maybe the crapshoot factor will help them. Otherwise the next parade in New York will be on Thanksgiving Day.
  6. German had an inauspicious debut. It can only get better from here.
  7. Hopefully, German can live up to the hype and be a big part of a revamped and much improved bullpen next season. This year's Sox would be in much better shape today if they had a better bullpen. It has cost them far too many games.
  8. In this miserable season , the Sox at least provided some comic relief last night. Their bumbling , inept play was good for a few laughs. I wonder if John Henry was amused ? .
  9. That was ugly. I have seen better played Little League games.
  10. One thing the Rays have is Kevin Cash. The best manager in the game. He gets the absolute best out of his players. And I don't mean that as a knock on Cora. Just as another explanation for the Rays' success.
  11. Bloom has a philosophy for constructing a bullpen. It is not unusual. It is straight out of the analytics handbook. That is , relievers are hit or miss. Don't spend money on the bullpen. Piece it together. Sometimes that works. Obviously, it is not working for the Sox. I have said it for a long time. In today's game , the bullpen is so vital. If you don't have a good one , you are in trouble. We can only hope that this becomes a priority this off season.
  12. Harm, that was some wild finish in Seattle on Sunday.
  13. Getting out of the cellar is a possibility. The Orioles are fading. About the only hope for a wild card would require a good winning streak plus the collapse of either the Rays, Blue Jays or Mariners. That is obviously an extreme long shot to put it mildly.
  14. Mikey Metsguy: " Hey Ferdie, did you catch the end of the Mets' game last night ? Diaz entrance to trumpets blaring , then he struck out the side to end it. Very exciting. " Ferdie Nerdwell: " No , I was on fangraphs , checking all the fWAR ratings . Then I was on BTV , seeing if they would accept my trade proposals. " Mikey : " You missed all the fun again. Diaz picked up his 29th save." Ferdie: " No, I had fun. Besides, saves are overrated. " Mikey: " Okay. See you around, Ferdie. "
  15. More back fence gossip.
  16. The truth hurts. Reality hurts.
  17. When Cora won with those players, he was called " the greatest manager in Sox history." And when the Sox finished tied for second last year (8 games out of first}, he was praised again. And Bloom was lauded. Apparently, credit is given for success, but no blame is issued for failure. That's how it is with some of our more biased observers.
  18. Do away with the cheat notes too. No more looking in your cap to see where you should play. Do some preparation.
  19. It really hasn't been all that much fun watching McGuire , Pham, Story and Kike. If that is the best part , I would hate to see the worst.
  20. A day at the ballpark can be a lot of fun , even if the team is losing. Unfortunately, many teams are making it a very expensive one. Too expensive for a lot of folks. And the Red Sox are one of the biggest offenders. It just makes it worse when they claim that they cannot afford Mookie Betts. And apparently can't even afford a decent bullpen.
  21. After the game , Cora was asked why he used Ort in that situation. He answered, " These kids have to learn and show us what they can do." Maybe Alex should check the birth certificates. Ort is not a kid any more. He is older than Bello , Schreiber and Whitlock.
  22. I would say that 2020 went into the books as a very bad season . Mercifully a short one.
  23. " They had multiple objectives and only one went sour." That is hilarious. Good job, Chaim. Give that man a raise.
  24. Down one in the ninth. Pinch hit with Almora and McGuire while Devers is on the bench. Why? Who made that decision? Cora? Or was he told? Are they trying to win or not? And how do they expect the fans to feel about it ?
  25. Sox are winning, but not gaining any ground. Need to build some momentum from the beat down of the Rangers. The next two series should show if there is still any hope of a wild card this year. As always, I am still a diehard.
