  1. Big game today in the Boogie Down Bronx. Gut check time for the Yankees .
  2. The Notre Dame game today has been relegated to Peacock. Apparently, NBC prefers to televise figure skating. Oohfah !!!
  3. As far as I can tell , the entire steroids accusation is based on a magazine cover photo. That is all. The bad teammate accusation is based on one camera shot of the dugout , which has been contradicted by the well respected manager. Some fans just seem to take a dislike to some players. Why ? Who knows ?
  4. If Theo felt that Nomar couldn't cut it at shortstop , it was his job to do something about it . I don't have a problem with that. Whether that trade was responsible for breaking the curse is a matter of opinion. Without Dave Roberts stolen base , Mueller's hit , Big Papi , Schilling and a few others heroics , as well as numerous other timely things , the trade for Cabrera would be long forgotten.
  5. Nomar was a really , really good ballplayer. As far as character goes , he is the kind of guy who would jump in the water to save someone who is drowning. Orlando Cabrera couldn't carry Nomar's jockstrap as a player or as a human being.
  6. It's a crapshoot. Two basically evenly matched teams in a short series . One or two key plays make the difference between winning or losing. No sense trying to over analyze it. A game of inches. As John Sterling so aptly puts it , " That's baseball , Suzyn. "
  7. They had Verlander on the ropes ? I think I missed that part. It must have happened between all the strikeouts.
  8. The Dodgers had a great bullpen all year. It was grossly mismanaged in the playoff with San Diego.
  9. I think that gets back to the question ; How many of the in - game moves are the manager's decision and how many are dictated by the front office ? As to the Dodgers , they had a great season , but the Padres are a dangerous team and the playoffs are definitely a crapshoot.
  10. Notin , I always count on you to provide some cockamamie explanation as to why plain old common sense is wrong. You never disappoint.
  11. Winging it is not a good plan. We saw enough of that in Fenway this year. With a bullpen , you should know who your closer is. You should know who has the 8th inning . You should know who your setup man ( or relief ace , if you prefer ) is. And the pitchers should know their roles so they can get ready and properly prepare. Now , sometimes you have to make changes , but " winging it " should never be the plan.
  12. It would much easier to list what Davey did right , because it was very little. But just in a nutshell, he apparently had no plan for the bullpen except to just wing it. I don't think anyone had an idea what their role was. Vesia frantically trying to get loose while they tried to stall was not how you want to draw it up. The seventh inning deteriorated into a confused fiasco .
  13. It is decimated . But you still have to work with what you have. You need structure. You need a plan . Who is going to close ? Who has the 8th ? The seventh ? When should they warm up and get ready. Who are they likely to face ? What is the plan ? If Holmes is the closer , he should have pitched the 9th. If he can 't go , Loaisga is probably the best option. Boone was bewildered. And I hate to say it because I like the guy , but so was Dave Roberts. His lack of a plan and structure was very apparent in the Dodger meltdown.
  14. I didn't bring up the starter issue. What are you talking about ?
  15. It's like arguing about where to place the deck chairs on the Titanic. Choosing between Haniger and Gallo will not save this team. Fix the bullpen . It is atrocious. Iceberg ahead.
  16. Starter depth has nothing to do with it. These games, like most games in baseball these days, comes down to the bullpens.
  17. Clarke Schmidt?????? In the biggest game of the year? In the words of tennis great, John McEnroe, " You can't be serious."
  18. Any short series is a crapshoot. That should be obvious to anyone. But it also comes down to the manager's decisions and the quality of the bullpen. Josh Hader, as opposed to a Clarke Schmidt for example, is definitely not a crapshoot.
  19. The only good thing about the Sox not being in the playoffs is that you can enjoy the games without feeling any pressure, stress or angst. The bad part is that you feel a sense of disappointment and envy. Like a kid with his nose pressed against the toy store window , knowing that he can't have any of the nice toys.
  20. The playoffs are not a crapshoot in the sense that every team has an equal chance. Obviously, the best teams have the best chance . But it is very much a crapshoot in the sense that all the teams do have a legitimate shot. Any short series is that way. Even a weak team can win a short series . And there are no weak teams in the playoffs. So it is fair to use the term "crapshoot."
  21. Looks like Chapman has gone AWOL. No showed a Yankee team practice.
  22. In an elimination game , you do whatever you think it takes to survive. I think Showalter was willing to use Diaz for three innings if need be.
  23. The A.L. East teams are not doing too well. Does that bode ill for the Yankees ?
  24. I think the flaw in the new system is that they don't re-seed the teams after the wild card round. Now the Dodgers will have to play the Mets/Padres winner in the NLDS. As the top seed, they should get the Phils.
  25. We shall see. I think Bogaerts wants, and deserves, more than they gave Story. How much, and for how long, will they be willing to go for their "top priority?"
