  1. Ben is currently finishing up his second year with Toronto. The two years have seen a sharp decline in the Jay's success after very good years in 2015 and 2016. Maybe the poor guy is just unlucky. Hopefully , he is quietly at work on a new five year plan.
  2. When you have one ring year sandwiched between three lost years , an impartial observer might conclude that , if anything was a fluke , it was probably the ring year. Here is a tip ; do not put on your resume that " things sucked for three out of my four years , but it was always the fault of someone else or just bad luck. The one good year was due to my work. After I was let go , my successor quickly turned things around , but that would have happened anyway if they had stuck with me . " Not a good idea.
  3. I think it is obvious that the Yankees need at least one good starter. Gray looks like a basket case. Tanaka is simply not consistently good. They are taking a big gamble if they stick with the current rotation and count on the bullpen to save them. Look for the Sox to gradually pull away in the race.
  4. Beeks has shown potential in AAA . Nothing wrong with giving him an opportunity to show what he can do in the big leagues. On the other hand , how would you like to be in last place , hopelessly out of contention and starting a washed up Gallardo in Fenway Park ?
  5. Scoreboard . Look at the Red Sox won / loss records under Cherington and under Dombrowski . No contest. I guess now we will hear that wins and losses are overrated. They don't matter very much. Other things are more important , etc.
  6. Here is the reality: Right now , the Sox have a better team than the Yankees. I am sure that Cashman realizes this and will do something to try and improve his team. That will not be easy unless he agrees to deal some top young talent. He has to make that decision soon.
  7. The post season following the 2013 title was probably the most useless , unproductive post season I have seen. Not one thing was done to help the team. Not one. I remember complaining about it at the time , and being told I was wrong and all was well. Now , I am still hearing that the 2014 team looked like a winner . I give up.
  8. The 2013 Boston Strong team was truly an inspired group of guys on a mission. We have heard many , many times that the post season is a crapshoot . But that team always seemed to find a way to win. You could say they overachieved. If you want to credit Cherington for that , okay fair enough. But the best way to have a parade is to field a playoff team year after year. Cherington did not do that. His other three years were absolutely horrible. You can't just shrug that off. Dombrowski , despite the retirement of David Ortiz , has put together a talented and exciting group that is very capable of winning it all. It will be up to the players to come through big time this post season. The G.M. can only do so much.
  9. Farms are meant to be decimated. Come harvest time , it is time to reap. The crops won't last forever. You keep what you need and take the rest to market to get what you can for them. Then you can plant the seeds anew. That is exactly what Dombrowski has done .
  10. The longing for the days of Ben Cherington is one of life's mysteries. The team's turnaround with Dombrowski was immediate and impressive. Sale , Kimbrel and Martinez are among the best in the game. Possible Hall of Famers. The traded prospects , for the most part , have achieved little or nothing. If he had held onto them , their trade value would be less today than it was then. Dombrowski is much preferable to Cherington. I don't see how that can be disputed.
  11. Blake Snell not making the team is a farce. I tend to be a skeptic about things anyway. Here is a true story. Many years ago , way before the Internet , they would hand out punch card ballots at the old Yankee Stadium. You would punch out your selections and drop them in a barrell on your way out. On my way out , I looked in the barrell. It was half filled with spindled , folded , mutilated , mustard stained , beer soaked , hanging chad " ballots ". I thought to myself , " No one is going to count these things , they are going straight to the dump ." Folks , everything is not always on the level.
  12. For whatever reason , there was a lot more interest in the game years ago. Ted's game winning homer. Then the years of N.L. dominance and the intensity of Pete Rose. The arguments over which league was superior. All of that started to change , perhaps due to the advent of interleague play. Nowadays , there is just not the same enthusiasm for the game. The home field advantage thing was just a gimmick to create interest , boost sagging ratings and help with TV contracts . Now , it is pretty much just a showcase for the top stars. But I'll be watching.
  13. Rodney pisses some people off with his cap angle and his penchant for shooting an arrow after a save. I don't see anything wrong with that. Baseball sorely needs more colorful characters . This is sports entertainment after all. Vince McMahon found out long ago that you can't have all " baby faces " . You need heels and controversy also. It has made him rich. The owners of the Red Sox and Yankees have made millions over the years because fans have totally bought into the good guys vs bad guys scenario. As a savvy G.M. , I am sure Dombrowski will consider acquiring Rodney objectively. Can he help the Sox win a championship or not ? The cap angle will not be a factor. Nor should it be.
  14. Watching these games is like watching early season college football. A powerhouse steamrolling some outmanned cupcake. Last night was an embarrassment to Major League Baseball. I wonder if the commissioner himself would enjoy watching a four hour debacle like that. Of course it is great to win , but it would be more interesting if there was some semblance of competition. This crap is not good for the game.
  15. The Mets have underachieved , but they do have some talent . The N.L. is , arguably , the weakest it has been in years. There is an outside chance that the Mets could run off a hot streak before the deadline , get back in the race and not be sellers after all.
  16. The " Best of BDC " will be available in a boxed set of 12 DVDs soon. Featuring Babe and a whole host of other colorful characters. I don't think the vets here at Talk Sox were too thrilled with the BDC " invasion." What they don't realize is that they actually got the sanest of the former BDC crew. It could have been much worse.
  17. Maybe this can be Cashman's trade promo : " Sonny is like a frightened little rabbit in New York , but he probably could pitch better for your team." I'm sure that will net something good in return.
  18. This game is like a heavyweight fight. ............................................... Tyson vs Spinks.
  19. A number of players made significant contributions to our three recent championships. Manny and Lowell among them. However , I think it is fair to say that without David Ortiz , we would currently be looking at a 100 year curse of the Bambino.
  20. I remember Cookie Rojas with the Phils back in the 60's. Playing the infield along with teammate Bobby Wine. Philly fans used to talk about " The plays of Wine and Rojas."
  21. Here it is July 6 , more than halfway through the season. Kansas City has just 25 wins. Pathetic. This is a team that was on top of the heap very recently. What happened ?
  22. For the love of God , can we please terminate this thread ? The repetiveness and redundancy of the pro and con arguments is mind numbing. No more , please. We get it.
  23. Looking at things objectively : Cherington presided over back to back dismal , cellar dwelling teams. He fully deserved to be fired. Dombrowski took over and immediately produced back to back division winners. ( We all know that anything can happen in the post season ). Dombrowski has acquired Sale , Kimbrel , Martinez , Price and others. He traded some prospects , kept some of the best and got rid of some dead wood. We currently have the best record in baseball , with a very realistic shot to win it all. Now , if he had held onto the traded prospects , do you really think we could now get better than the likes of Sale and Kimbrel for them. I don't think so. I fully understand the love for Theo , but the longing for Cherington and his " five year plan " is very misplaced. Excessive worry about the future years is not necessary. This is a big time franchise. Things have a way of working out. We are much better off with Dombrowski.
  24. Today is the sixteenth anniversary of the passing of the immortal , the one and only , the greatest , Theodore Samuel Williams. Teddy Ballgame.
