  1. Not to pile on , but there is now a new word in the thesaurus for a preposterous statement. " Storkism."
  2. There are a number of different scenarios that wind up resulting in a one run margin at the end. It is hard to make a generalization. But I think the word " luck " is thrown about a little too loosely when the results do not meet our expectations.
  3. Without a doubt , Oakland would be the easiest to beat. Preferring to play the Yankees in the ALDS makes no sense.
  4. Why can't Sandy Leon work the same magic on relievers that he does on starters ?
  5. Actually , very little irritates me. Just having a little fun. I bet you were disappointed when we acquired Ian Kinsler instead of Dixon Machado .
  6. It's no secret that starting pitching has been the Yankee's weakest link. The recent struggles of Severino only exacerbates things. Sabathia has a bad knee and is overweight and out of shape. He cannot be counted on to remain healthy. Tanaka is okay , but tends to give up the long ball too often . Gray has flopped big time. Happ and Lynn help to some extent. Adams has not impressed , and they seem reluctant to throw Sheffield into the deep end as yet. All in all , this has kept the pressure on the bullpen. The pen is showing the effects of it.
  7. I don't mind seeing the ump calling a strike on a borderline pitch. Make him swing the bat. Keep the game moving and keep it interesting. With all the emphasis on OBP , a lot of guys are up there looking for a walk. They gripe when they get rung up on a pitch that was too close to take. It is making the game tedious. I would definitely like seeing more " pitcher's umpires. "
  8. For years , left handed hitters dominated . Not so any more. The shift certainly has something to do with that.
  9. I would venture to say that there has never been a team this good , a team fifty games over .500 , a team running away from a very strong rival , that has ever received as many negative , pessimistic and disparaging comments from it's own fans as this year's Red Sox. There is very little wrong with this team. Very few weaknesses. Very little to complain about. But for some fans , complaining and worrying about everything is deeply ingrained in their system. They just can't help it.
  10. With robot umps there would still be arguments over ball and strike calls. But a player probably would not get ejected / suspended for making incidental contact with the droid.
  11. Now they have Yale professors analyzing every pitch called by umps over the past 3 1/2 years. We have officially gone completely crazy.
  12. The deep thinkers have brilliant minds , but rather thin skin.
  13. " Kill the ump " and " Get new glasses , Blue " are all part of the fun of the game. If you want robot umps , why not robot managers , coaches and even players. Let's try to eliminate all mistakes , errors and controversy from the game. That will be awesome.
  14. At least we know who the umpires are. Who are these UZR geeks ? Somebody's out of work , down on their luck brother in law ?
  15. Last night Kimbrel made the mistake of not thinking Smoak might be swinging at the 3 and 0 pitch. Threw the fastball right in there. Other than that , he struck out the side. Blew the save , but not the game.
  16. The situation that Bellhorn set up had two outs , game tied , winning run on second and first base open. In that situation , walking Benintendi would have been the right move. You not only bring up a weaker hitter , but you set up a force play at second and third. Walking the bases loaded is an entirely different scenario. I would not have done that.
  17. Smug self-superiority is one of the hallmarks of the deep thinker.
  18. When you have the best team in baseball , the average fan tends to praise the GM. When you finish last in consecutive years , the average fan tends to slam the GM. But the deep thinker does just the opposite. The deep thinker doesn't like it when reality goes opposite to their view of how things should be. The deep thinker always has a better plan.
  19. Like a lot of decisions , this was situational. With the winning run on second , the intentional walk would not set up a possibly bigger inning. It is hard to have one set rule for every situation.
  20. No question that Benintendi is the more dangerous hitter in that situation. But loading the bases is a very risky proposition. Leaves no room for error. Boone is not the brightest bulb in the chandelier , but I really can't fault him on this.
  21. A lot more fun playing the Pale Hose than the Carmines.
  22. The ball was hit higher than the pitcher he hit it off of. Dock Ellis.
  23. Swihart is on the DL. Butler is the backup catcher. But you can't make that kind of switch without losing your DH.
  24. It has been said over and over again. Anything can happen in the post season. At that point , there is nothing more a GM can do. Somebody has to step up , get hot and be the hero. David Ortiz , along with some others , has done that in the past. If Dave Roberts was picked off first or thrown out at second ( almost happened ) , the Sox are swept in the 2004 ALCS. The legend of Theo would have been delayed , and Tito may not have even lasted until 2007. The Sox are clearly the best team in baseball right now and will be the post season favorites. But a big time effort plus a bit of luck will be needed come playoff time.
  25. Booney was angry after the game. He refused to buy the boys ice cream on the flight to Chicago.
