Starters often pitch partial innings also . There are always going to be little blips that happen occasionally with any stat . These things tend to even out over time and are of minimal impact to something like a career ERA .

Huh ? Who said anything about that ? I said that career ERA is the best stat for evaluating a pitcher . I guess I shouldn't be surprised that some would disagree. Some will disagree with just about anything.

I think the lower spenders have a better chance of making the playoffs in this wild card era . As we know , if you get in the playoffs anything can happen. But looking at the championship teams over the years , it is pretty hard to deny the connection between payroll and parades . And it is pretty hard to miss the fact that some teams are content to take the money and be satisfied with mediocrity. I think the players are certainly not missing it . Things should get interesting.

You can make the argument that the catchers are not as familiar with the relievers as they are with the starters .Okay . But you could then say that Swihart is not that familiar with anyone on the staff unless he caught them a lot in the minors . So , it goes both ways .

People have opinions. They tend to have their favorite players and their , shall we say , not so favorite players . Sometimes this is based on results. Sometimes it is based on personalities. Regrettably, sometimes it is based on our ( perhaps subconscious) biases . The great thing about baseball today is that we have a million different stats . Many of them relatively new and often with some subjectivity involved. One can usually find a stat that supports their opinion . In the end , it helps make discussion boards like this interesting.

Career ERA is the definitive stat for a pitcher . I tried to explain why . If you prefer WHIP , good .

Some base runners score and some don't. ERA will reflect that . WHIP won't. WHIP gives the same value to a base on balls or an infield single that it gives to a home run. ERA is the better stat .

If you only give the catcher credit for success with some pitchers and don't give any criticism for the lack of success with others , you are being less than objective . Of course , objectivity is rapidly becoming a lost art .

My point is that games are decided by runs scored , not base runners. Ultimately, the only base runners who matter are the ones who scored . I am not saying that WHIP has no value . Just saying that career ERA is the best method for judging pitchers . All of the little discrepancies will tend to even out over the course of a career . Of course, nothing is going to be perfect .

There is a definite correlation between spending and winning . I know there are exceptions to the rule , but there is a correlation. Some teams are willing to be also rans and save the money . That is an issue for MLB .

I would have to check out all the variables first . Wind velocity , wind direction , temperature, relative humidity, beer sales and so forth . The game has become so complicated. I think I need to get out.

There are discrepancies in many stats . A reliever ' s career ERA , when compared to other relievers , is still the best measuring stick as far as I am concerned. No system is perfect . WHIP concerns the number of base runners. But those base runners only matter if and when they score . A guy who goes one inning and gives up a single and a walk , then strikes out the side , has an ERA of 0.00 and a WHIP of 2 . A guy who goes one inning and gives up a home run , then strikes out the side , has an ERA of 9.00 and a WHIP of 1 . Which one did a better job ?

To me , ERA is the ultimate stat for a pitcher. The name of the game for pitchers is to not give up runs . All the other stats just play into that . Anyway , you have to admit , an ERA of 1.91 for a nine year career is pretty special for any pitcher .

I have a high opinion of both Koji and Kimbrel . The fact is that Kimbrel's career achievements have been better than Koji's . Kimbrel has 333 saves , the youngest to ever reach that total . Koji had 95 saves in his career . Kimbrel is a seven time all star . Koji made one all star team . Koji had a career OPS against of .588 . Kimbrel has a career OPS against of .485 , which is not only better than Koji , but better than anyone else. Koji had a career ERA of 2.66 . Kimbrel has a career ERA of 1.91 , which is not only better than Koji , but better than anyone else. There are a million different stats out there . You can probably find some to use for debate . But none are more important than career ERA . Koji was terrific . Kimbrel has been even better .

He might just turn out to be an important part of the pen . Right now his biggest attribute is that he will work cheap.

I am not shortchanging Koji by any means . I am a big fan of his . His career numbers are not as good as Kimbrel's. Plain and simple.

In four years with the Sox Koji was 14 -13 with 79 saves . In three years Kimbrel is 12 - 7 with 108 saves . Koji does have a lower ERA however . The thing that most stands out to me about Kimbrel is his career stat in OPS against . In nine years , it is . 485 . I could be wrong ( yet again ) but I don't think anyone has a lower one than that .

Koji had an unbelievable year in the magical season of 2013 . Other than that , he was good , but his career numbers are not nearly equal to Kimbrel's. He was definitely lovable. I still love him .
