  1. There were folks on here at this time last year who said , let J.D. Martinez walk . I am sick of his haggling . Take it or leave it . People really do lack patience .
  2. Some of the owners may be influenced by analytics . Or maybe just use them as an excuse not to spend . I don't know . Do you really believe that some of the best players in the game are only worth 2 or 3 more wins to the team than some minimum wage jabroni ? If you do , you certainly are not going to pay them 100 mil and upwards . However , it will be very difficult to win a championship without any elite players . Possible maybe , but very difficult . Some owners seem to be okay with that . Are their fans okay with it too ?
  3. When Robinson was traded from Cincinnati to Baltimore, the Orioles promptly won it all . His teammate, Brooks Robinson, ( who was pretty good himself ) said " Frank taught us how to win " . That kind of sums it up .
  4. No question it takes a complete, well balanced team to win this division. Sale , Price and Eovaldi were terrific additions . ( Note that the more fickle fans will be ready to turn on Price should he stumble at all ) . Please remember that , between the three of them , they have a total of four complete games for Boston. The bullpen is always important and never more so than in today's game. And , hopefully the last time I repeat this , it is not all about Kimbrel. The Sox have passed on every other reasonably viable alternative reliever as well . Now , if the remaining bullpen crew gets the job done this season and we win the division again , I will be the first to say that everything was done correctly.
  5. To be fair , the Phils seem like one of the few teams that is willing to spend . However , a lot of guys don't want to play there if they don't have to .
  6. Three years of Kimbrel . Three A.L. East titles . Coincidence ? Maybe . Maybe any jabroni would have done as well . Closing games is overrated . One thing for sure ; if we don't win it this year , folks will surely find some other reason for it . It won't be the bullpen. You can count on that .
  7. Maxie , It was Gordon Gecko . Double G . And he went to prison .
  8. Kimbrel has been consistently outstanding for nine years . Most of the top relievers are as well . Most of the top starters too . But many of the other starters are very inconsistent. Some don't last as starters and become inconsistent relievers . Some are just barely consistent enough to remain in the rotation for a while . The players who are consistently good become known as stars . Back to Kimbrel ; he was 5 - 1 , with 42 saves and a 2.74 ERA in what was considered a " bad " year . That is 47 wins that he was directly involved in . A lot of productivity to make up . Let's just hope our " crapshoot " rolls enough sevens to make it up this season .
  9. I am not a financial expert. And , to me , the financial side of baseball is the least interesting part of the game . The owners are very , very , very wealthy . We all know that . An MLB franchise is a very lucrative investment. It does appear that some owners are more willing than some others to spend money on the ballclub . As for the Yankees , it seems to me that George was more gung ho to spend whatever it took to win championships. Hal is more bottom line oriented.
  10. Nobody should be worried about Mookie. I don't think anyone is . I was just pointing out the folly of small sample sizes . And the ever present hypocrisy . And the idea of relievers being a crapshoot is a popular misconception. . Some are very consistent. Just like starters . Or anybody else .
  11. I think that as the players and many fans are becoming disgruntled over the ( real or perceived) lack of spending, the owners are becoming a little defensive . Steinbrenner complaining about the debt service now . The other day John Henry made the comment about how much money he was willing to lose , implying that he is losing money on the ballclub. That's a little hard to believe . To be fair , Henry and Steinbrenner have been the biggest spenders . And they deserve credit for not selling the naming rights to their ballparks. But it looks to me that labor trouble is brewing .
  12. Famous last words : " He should be fine ."
  13. Feller was one of the greats . You could certainly make the case that he was better than Ryan . However , I don't think he matches Ryan in no hitters and strikeouts , even without the military service . Ryan's longevity was amazing . 27 years and still effective almost to the end .
  14. Before too long MLB will probably add a couple of more wild card teams . More chances for the also rans to make the playoffs. Fake parity .
  15. The N.L. East race should be competitive and interesting . The Marlins will not be a part of it .
  16. MVP in both leagues . You don't see that very often , to say the least .
  17. The average fan wants to make more money too . But that is his / her problem . It is good to be rich . It is not good to be jealous and envious .
  18. Billionaires vs millionaires . Not your normal labor dispute . Overpriced tickets , parking , beer and hot dogs . Where will it end ? I guess we should be happy that we are not fans of one of the teams that are going to spring training with almost no chance at winning it all . And not willing to spend in order to at least make it somewhat interesting .
  19. Mookie Betts hit .188 in the ALDS , .217 in the ALCS and .217 in the World Series . However , I am not the least bit worried about him . He is one of the two best players in the game . Craig Kimbrel is a seven time all star . He has the lowest career ERA , batting average against and OPS against of anyone in the business. Not too worried about him either . On the other hand , what we have left in our bullpen does worry me a bit .
  20. As I argued before , WHIP only matters when the base runners score . Sometimes the only hope batters had against Ryan was looking for a walk , like an intimidated little leaguer .
  21. That's why I said " not necessarily the best ." The most dominant.
  22. Alexi Ogando is out there in one of those dumpsters.
  23. JBJ needs to have a big year this season . Next year he turns the dreaded 30 .
  24. Wright is kind of a problem child what with the injuries and 911 calls . But when the knuckleball is dancing , he can be tough. With the iffy health of most of our starters , Wright could get quite a few starts . He might just turn out to be valuable .
