  1. It is hard to put the steroid stuff aside , but putting it aside , Mejia is a pretty good arm . He might help .
  2. As long as Kimbrel has not signed elsewhere, there is still hope . Why some Sox fans don't want him back is completely beyond my comprehension. He is one of the best closers of all time . Still young , strong, healthy and durable .
  3. After signing with the Mets , Justin Wilson was lamenting that many owners were more interested in pocketing the money than in spending to put a winning team on the field. If that is the general feeling of the players , the labor negotiations could get rough.
  4. Now that Mejia is back from his " lifetime " suspension ; maybe there is still hope for Natick to NC .
  5. Kimbrel has been with the Sox three years . Three times an All Star . More importantly, three A.L. East titles . How much he would be missed depends on how much you think he had to do with those titles. If you believe that any number of guys could have done as well , then there is no need to keep him . If you believe he was a big factor in the team's success , then you do want to keep him , or at least find a suitable replacement. It all depends on how you feel about it . Obviously, money is a big factor . No doubt about that .
  6. Swihart is the best athlete of the three . So far , that has not translated into his being the best ballplayer . I think there is still some thought in Sox management that he might do it this year . Hence , the reluctance to trade him . Now , if Pedroia comes back , somebody has to go . Either Holt , Nunez or one of the catchers . Pretty sure it won't be Holt . But that is what has to happen when you keep two first basemen. Stay tuned.
  7. I don't know why he would be looking to trade for a reliever when he apparently has no interest in signing any of the available free agents . I don't see the logic there .
  8. I can't get mad at this one . Not a fan of Shawn Kelley .
  9. Comparing athletes of different generations, while fun , is really meaningless. So many things change over time. If someone is the best , or one of the best , in their own era , that is all you can ask . Babe Ruth 's accomplishments speak for themselves. Ottavino was probably just fooling around. Much ado over nothing. I would guess that , if the Sox had signed Ottavino ( I think they should have) , and he said the same thing , we would be applauding.
  10. I think we are becoming extremely obsessive in our concern over the cliff , the reset , the farm , the luxury tax , hanging on to some rather marginal players , possible changes in the CBA , etc . Who knows what the future will bring? Need to give it a rest . Maybe that is what happens in a slow hot stove league . I say , fix the bullpen and get started on defending the title . If John Henry wants to spend the money , good . If he doesn't, good . Enjoy the coming season . But if you get more enjoyment from the other stuff , so be it .
  11. What with Pedro drilling him in the ass and Ottavino blowing him away on three pitches ; the Bambino must be choking on his hot dogs in heaven.
  12. Not sure if the budget can be stretched enough to feed El Guapo .
  13. Is Ugie Urbina out of prison yet ? Give him a call . Or maybe Dan Bard would come out of retirement for one more shot at glory . And don't forget the world's most interesting man , Alfredo Aceves . Any of these guys should fit within our restricted budget .
  14. Looks like things have changed the last couple of years . So many teams are just not looking to spend. They are content to put a halfway decent team on the field and hope for the best . They can always call it " rebuilding " or " taking a step back ". Plus , many are now influenced by analytics. Why pay this guy 100 million and upwards when he is only worth two or three more wins than some minimum wage jabroni ? Maybe not the best time to be a free agent. They may have to settle for less than they would like and go to a team they really would not prefer.
  15. The thing is , you have spent all this money with the goal of winning the championship . Why stop here and jeopardize it ? It makes no sense to me . Not asking for an unlimited budget , just what it takes to have a bullpen that won't be our Achilles heel. I don't see how anyone can downplay the importance of the pen in baseball today. Look at the Yankees. They already had Chapman and Betances , but they still went out and signed Britton and Ottavino . Two guys that we sure could have used . We have a rare opportunity to repeat. Why not go for it ?
  16. It seems to me that most of those who like to criticize the use of small sample sizes tend to fall into the same thing when the small sample size suits their purpose. I guess sometimes you can have it both ways .
  17. MLB owners are in kind of a unique position. They are in competition with each other , but they also depend on each other for the success of the industry. It is not too good when some make minimal effort to succeed , but enjoy sharing in the success of others . That seems to be where it is right now.
  18. Dombrowski is certainly not about to throw John Henry under the bus for closing the check book. That would not be wise .
  19. As I said before , I am not in favor of a trade that would weaken another area to bolster the bullpen. Spend what it takes to do it . If you insist, we do have two first basemen, three catchers and two utility infielders . We could do something there without too much pain. As for Porcello, he has been a reliable work horse. Would prefer to keep him. However , he is entering the last year of his contract and there is some question about whether he will be re signed . He is a solid guy , but his career ERA is 4.26 . Okay , but not great . Trading him , while not preferable, should not be out of the question either.
  20. Yes , it can be a thankless job. And Dave has done very , very well . But the fact is that he has done next to nothing about the bullpen this off season . That is a legitimate concern for many of us .
  21. Exactly. When you have invested this much , why draw the line here and jeopardize your chances for a championship ?
  22. I am not sarcastically directing my comments at the people of this board . However, it is good of you to stand up for them. I have noted that we don't really have any say in the Sox decision making. But we all do have our opinions on what should be done. Just adding my two cents worth. It's not much , but probably better than " rifling through a pile of turds ."
  23. I guess it comes down to how much importance you give the bullpen as opposed to the other areas . I happen to think that , in today's game , the bullpen is vital . For me , I think we have a chance to repeat , so we should spend what it takes . I never called John Henry cheap . But sometimes you have to do what it takes to win . If you absolutely must cut in other areas , we do have two first basemen , three catchers , two utility infielders and a full staff of starting pitchers . I would prefer to keep them , but I don't value them over and above a strong bullpen. And it didn't have to be Kimbrel. We have seen a number of cheaper, not as good , but still viable alternatives go off the board one by one . I just cannot see trying to win again and going with such a questionable bullpen.
  24. Head on over to the clearance aisle , where Strickland is on special. Better hurry .
  25. Attention Cost Cutters shoppers : I direct your attention to discount aisle three , where Brach is on sale for three mill . Oops. Sorry , too late .
