Very hard to predict which first baseman , or combination of first basemen , will outhit their counterparts . The Sox combo is more certain to reach a particular level of productivity, while the Yankee combo probably has more of a chance to really excel or really fail . I don't care much about " projections ." We will find out the answer soon enough.

True . We do not know what the game plan is right now . I see three possibilities. 1 - D.D. is just playing hard ball in negotiations. 2- D.D. truly believes we can win with the bullpen pretty much as is . 3 - John Henry has reached the limit of his spending on the team. At least for now. We will know more in a couple / few weeks . Stay tuned.

I would be surprised, maybe even shocked, if we did not sign at least one of them.

I don't know about the trend toward strong bullpens changing any time soon. The only way for that to happen would be for the starters to start going deeper in games . Hard to see that happening.

I never really expected the Sox to sign Kimbrel . Too much money . Too many years . Never thought it was a matter of Kimbrel or bust . There were viable alternatives , albeit not as good . But now the viable alternatives are disappearing one by one . Britton to the Yankees hurts the most . It is getting to where it is Kimbrel or bust . Is D.D. playing the waiting game again , ala J.D.Martinez ? Or are we really preparing to go with Matt Barnes as the bell cow of the bullpen ?

Do we want to run the risk of wasting a big payroll and a golden opportunity to repeat by going with a second rate bullpen? Basically, that is the debate .

To tell you the truth, I'm a little afraid to do that.

I'm not glorifying the saves . Just pointing out what actually happened. And not everybody can match that . Some have blown leads and lost big games . That has happened a lot , even to the best . You are dismissing a nine year body of work that is as good, or better , than anyone has ever accomplished. Kimbrel is 30 years old and has always been healthy , strong and durable . Could he decline in ability? Of course. So could any of the others . I'm sorry. I don't get it . If you prefer Cody Allen because you think he can " bounce back " , so be it . I am looking for the Sox to repeat in 2019 . As far as somebody walking in 2020 or beyond, let's cross that bridge when we get to it . We need a strong, deep bullpen to win this season .

I disagree. The rest of the team cannot make up for a faulty bullpen. We won last year somewhat easily partly because Kimbrel had 42 saves , in what for him , was a bad year. That was 42 wins in the bank. We went 11-3 in the post season . Kimbrel, despite his struggles, had six saves and never blew a lead or contributed to one of the three losses . That is the reality. If you normally like to forget small sample sizes and look at the bigger picture, why do you do the opposite here ? Can you name me one reliever who can match Kimbrel's nine year track record ?

I can't answer that. I don't agree with the premise . If I need to choose between fixing the furnace and buying food, I can't do it. Both are needed. I have to come up with the money to do both. It might be hard for me , but it is not hard for those who own MLB franchises. They do have the money already. Luxury taxes and resets are just their way of working around the lack of a salary cap . I don't necessarily blame them, but I just don't feel like playing along. Don't tell me that we can't afford a closer without giving up our shortstop.

Quite frankly , I would not want to defend a championship with that bullpen.

We should know we are hooked when we start referring to our favorite team as " we " . " We " are not sharing in the profits . " We " are paying the bills. But " we " don't seem to mind as long as " we " feel we are getting our money's worth. -
I don't know. I think you might be overrating that aspect.

Well , That's negotiation. Kimbrel's agent was playing the game too when he asked for the moon and stars to begin talks .

If you have to have a weak area ( I don't think that is a given) , I don't want it to be the bullpen. And , assuming the Yankees get Machado, what exactly is their weak area ?

The way the game is played today , the bullpen is probably more important than it has ever been .

If I had to guess , I would guess that he has an agreement with Kimbrel's agent to check back with him before signing with another team . Just a guess .

I certainly hope not . Of course , there might be a difference of opinion on what constitutes a second rate pen .

I can't accept the idea that we have to trade our center fielder , shortstop or starting pitcher to fix the bullpen . This is a big time organization .

Most of the discussion has been about the closer position. But we really could use two good bullpen arms. At least one of whom has the ability to close . And the options are getting fewer . The Yankees bullpen looks very formidable. Let's not let our bullpen become our Achilles ' heel .
