  1. The best thing about stats today is that there are so many of them . One can almost always find a stat , in a selective sample size or carefully chosen time frame , to support just about any somewhat reasonable position. The arguments are endless .
  2. That must mean that WAR is now a " baseball card stat ." Therefore , WAR is obsolete . You young whippersnapper .
  3. Actually, I don't entirely avoid the advanced metrics . I am familiar with them . I just don't get too crazy about it . After all is said and done , the game is still really pretty simple .
  4. Hey , that's really good stuff . Very clever. Gullible, predictable, but very clever .
  5. I think all this acronym business started with the government years ago . Now , it is way out of control. Just a lot of gobbledygook to mask the plain , simple facts . What can I say ? I am definitely a dinosaur.
  6. Okay . Actually, I haven't watched SNL since Norm Macdonald left years ago .
  7. I have no idea what that is . If it's good , I'm okay with it .
  8. When you look at the standings of the clubs ; it shows Wins - Losses and Games behind . It doesn't show WAR - Projections and Pythagaras . When you look at the scoreboard; it shows Runs - Hits and Errors . It doesn't show OPS - WHIP and UZR . The basics are still the basics . Too much gibberish around these days .
  9. One more thing : This talk about a " crap shoot " sets up a convenient excuse for failure . You see it all the time in the post season . And now you see it when talking about bullpen construction. Should the bullpen fail , you can say " I told you it was a crap shoot . We happened to roll snake eyes , but it was not our fault. These things happen in a crap shoot " .
  10. The owners are clearly making a concerted effort to hold down spending on salaries. ( It is understandable and I don't necessarily blame them . ) They are using these kind of analytics as well as the ( essentially self imposed ) luxury tax as tools in an attempt to justify this effort . I am pretty sure the players are coming to realize this more each day . It will all come to a head before long.
  11. If you want to learn about weight lifting / body building , go to Arnold Schwarzenegger not Arnold Stang . If you want to learn about baseball , go to Alex Rodriguez ( I know , I know ) not Alex Speier .
  12. This stuff , while sometimes repetitive , redundant and tedious , is a 1000 % saner than the game threads .
  13. Here is the latest expert prognosis on Wright's health from Sox chief medical officer , Dr. Vinnie Boombatz ; " Steven should be okay , as long as that pesky knee holds up ."
  14. Your run of the mill reliever may be a crap shoot . Just like your run of the mill starter . The top relievers are pretty consistent. I doubt the Yankees are thinking of their bullpen as a crap shoot . They are counting on it to be consistently good .
  15. Kimmi , My post on the last page of the " Are Sox players paid enough " thread sums up my feelings on WAR . Other than that , I think the bullpen is a vital part of today's game , and is not the place to try and luck out . As for Alex Speier ; I think he is a nerd and a kiss up nerd at that .
  16. I think we won 17 of 19 to start last season . It will be very difficult to match that . I do think that MLB was good to the Sox with the early season schedule. What I don't like is that we will play two games in London against the Yankees, and both games will count as home dates for the Sox . Why is that ?
  17. West coast trips can often be a problem , but , especially with weather considerations, it is good to get one of them out of the way right off the bat . All in all , a pretty easy start to the season as we get ready for the Yankees . Can't complain.
  18. I think if you asked most fans to explain WAR on the spot , without looking anything up , they would have no idea . I know I wouldn't. But if the system involves taking a variety of " baseball card " stats and throwing them into a blender , along with a few extenuating circumstances, a certain amount of judgment on their relative importance and a dash of personal opinion , and it all came out with a numerical rating for the player involved , I could , at least somewhat , dig it . But when you try to translate that into wins as opposed to an imaginary " replacement " and then into a dollar amount, you lose me completely. Getting old ain't easy .
  19. I would say that is very possible. And the White Sox and Phillies deserve a tip of the cap for openly expressing a willingness to spend to improve their chances .
  20. At this point my guess is that Harper will wind up in the N.L. West , Machado goes to the Yankees, Keuchel stays in Houston and Kimbrel goes to the Phils . Probably dead wrong on all of them .
  21. We really have no way of knowing what is going on in negotiations with any of the free agents. MLB trade rumors usually doesn't get the story until it is also breaking news elsewhere . Other than that, MLB trade rumors is the go - to site for news , rumors , leaked information and speculation, but they usually are about as accurate as your average TalkSox poster .
  22. Exactly how much player measurement has evolved is a subject for a whole other debate . Regardless , a good manager / supervisor should know , and should be expected to know , which employees are productive and which are not . Regrettably, due to human nature and human failings on the part of both management and labor , a true merit based pay system would never work out .
  23. Merit based pay and merit raises ................. A smart idea , but an idea that never , ever catches on .
  24. When an athlete starts to decline depends on things like health , conditioning , diet , genetics and other factors . You really can't set one age where it begins . Far too many exceptions for there to even be a general rule . Eventually though , it will catch up to everyone .
