  1. There is a certain superior snobbism that those who are devoted to analytics / sabermetrics display to those who don't quite buy into the whole thing . You will get their condescending attitude that you must believe the earth is flat and so forth . This applies to other subjects as well , but I'm not going there . In my view , skepticism is not something to mock . And always going along with the latest trend does not make one any smarter than the skeptic .
  2. It's not just Harper and Machado . There are a ton of free agents out there wondering what is going on .
  3. I would say that is exactly what the owners are hoping for . Part of their master plan , if you will .
  4. Assuming you go with twelve pitchers , you can only have a four man bench . Having two first basemen is a luxury , but a luxury that puts the squeeze on your roster .
  5. It probably comes down to who you want to keep . Vasquez has only a small trade value . You would not get very much in return. Swihart probably has the same or less . Leon , a 30 year old , light hitting defensive specialist , has little to no trade value . Take your pick . But it comes down to who you want to keep , not who might bring back something in a trade .
  6. To me , it would be somewhat surprising if Harper got a better deal than Machado . Anyway , I think that once Harper and Machado are signed, Keuchel and Kimbrel will follow shortly. That would still leave a lot of free agents hanging.
  7. Okay . But my guess is that Wohlers' opinion would not be shared by most relief pitchers / closers past or present . And Speier is still a dweeb . He wouldn't know a slider from a hoagie if it hit him in the butt .
  8. The best solution for the DH is to just make it optional for the manager , no matter where or when the game is being played . The N.L. would fall in line very quickly .
  9. I am not the one who brought Theo and D.D. into the discussion. So , I am actually just putting the goal posts back where they were in the first place. I don't question Speier as a writer. Just as an " expert."
  10. Okay . Checkmate. But the comparisons kind of evolved here . I started out using Alex Speier as an example . Somehow , it changed to Epstein and Dombrowski. And ex players have done well as mangers and coaches . How would you like to see Speier replace Cora ?
  11. Knowing what it takes to have a baby and knowing what it takes to deliver a baby are two entirely different things .
  12. Usually , when you hear the term " ace " used it is in the context of a team's pitching staff. " Bill Monbouquette is the ace of Boston's staff ." It doesn't necessarily compare him to the rest of MLB .
  13. As the owners look for more ways to economize, it will be interesting to see if the concept of " openers " and " bullpen games " catches on . It could lead to less emphasis on traditional pitching staffs and fewer " aces . " And it would save money for the owners.
  14. I think there is still that lingering feeling that Swihart might have more to offer than we have seen as yet . Although , you could probably say that about Vazquez as well . But if Pedroia is healthy , somebody has to go .
  15. I don't really have a problem with WAR and the other analytics . I just don't get too excited over it all . The way I see it , you have websites trying to make a buck . They employ some very smart geeks who love to play around with numbers . And they come up with things like WAR . And that's okay . There are a million stats around these days . Some are real , some are not . WAR is not a real stat . It is a contrived stat , a manufactured stat . But many people swear by it . Fine . No problem .
  16. Change of pace : Saw Mookie the other night on a TV show called " Celebrity Bowling Invitational." Don't know when it was taped . The idea is that they pair a celebrity with a professional bowler . Mookie was teamed with a pro named Tommy Jones . They won and took home the trophies by defeating seven other teams of celebrities & pro bowlers . Mookie continues to be on quite a roll . No pun intended .
  17. The level of discourse here has deteriorated just a little bit. Need to make a sincere effort to get things back on track towards our usual impeccable standards .
  18. No . But using Theo and D.D. sets the bar pretty high. And there are certainly some players who are not very astute about the game . But I do think there are some who would make excellent G.M.s if they were so inclined and put their best efforts into it .
  19. I do think that D.D. has done well . I'm sure there are other examples . But I still haven't changed my opinion.
  20. I agree that Cora would have been a better " Alex " example. Don't agree with Wohlers and don't really care about his " insight ." As for Arnold Stang ; I don't think he ever really pumped much iron . However , he did make a forgettable flick with Schwarzenegger called " Hercules in New York ." I do think that people who actually do something and do it well have an advantage over those who just basically watch . Anyway , it was really just an ( admittedly lame ) attempt at humor .
  21. Jack Flap , As far as ending the analytics debate by agreeing to disagree ; Okay , but you could say that about almost any topic. It would kind of defeat the whole purpose of sites like this .
  22. In the words of General Sherman ; " WAR is hell ."
  23. Sad. . Zac was a lot of fun . A great , kind of dry , sense of humor . RIP .
  24. Bell , I always keep a sense of humor. It's just that is kind of a weird sense of humor, and many people just don't get it .
  25. The Dunkin Donuts on River Ave . may go out of business.
