  1. That article pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter. But I am in a very small minority here .
  2. Red Sox chief medical officer , Dr . Vinnie Boombatz weighed in on the chances of Pedroia being healthy again . He said , " Knees can be tricky . "
  3. Maybe John Henry told D.D. that the spending party is over . And Dombrowski is just busting John's balls with some of these signings . Or maybe he thinks where there is velocity , there is hope .
  4. Maybe John Henry told Dombrowski that the spending party is over . And D.D. is just busting John's balls with some of these signings .
  5. There are not a lot of us dinosaurs left .
  6. If you read the rest of the article , it does go on to question whether it is wise to risk the rare chance to repeat by drawing the line at this time .
  7. There are quite a few has been and never was mediocrities out there , but I'll say this much about Runzler , he's one of them .
  8. Jayson Stark is not immune from the corrective blue pencil of " The Editor " .
  9. I used to partake in the game threads . I felt like a small ray of optimism and confidence , drowning in a cesspool of steaming pessimism , anger and despair . And this during the most successful Sox season ever . It got to be too much . Now , I seem like the negative one . Go figure .
  10. No beef . He is " The Editor " . It is his job to correct all misguided , outdated , erroneous and just plain dumb ideas and opinions . I understand . He is just trying to help us all become better informed , more enlightened posters .
  11. Let's put it this way . If we ( God forbid ) do fall short this year , and it appears that it was the bullpen that derailed us , we certainly will not admit it . We will come up with other reasons . It's what we do .
  12. The" Editor " has spoken .
  13. I stand corrected. ERA is a trash , baseball card stat . I will try to do better.
  14. Notin is " The Editor " . Nothing the Editor says should be considered ******** . He is just doing his job .
  15. If . If . If . I do understand how betting works . But thanks for the imaginary scenario .
  16. Yeah . You can go crazy with all this stuff. I'll take career ERA as the best yardstick in evaluating a pitcher . It is not perfect . If you want to alter it by considering altitude, wind velocity, temperature, humidity, short porches , green monsters , rafters , death valleys , length of grass and so forth , have fun . We can have ERA + , ERA - , ERA *** , ERA x , ERA y , ERA z and on and on ad nauseum .
  17. Okay . I take it you are saying that we would be favored to beat the Yankees , but you would not pick us against an entry of the Yankees and Rays . I just disagree. I think it is basically a two team race . I would be very surprised if the Rays won the division. Very surprised.
  18. Not at all . I have a good opinion of them . But they were part of the team last year . And no one should expect them to repeat their World Series heroics . The only difference is they will be here from the start . We have not improved on the group that celebrated in Dodger Stadium. We got off to a fantastic start last year . I don't think we can improve on that . I just don't consider it an improvement by just keeping what you already have .
  19. Not sure what you mean by " the field " . Essentially , the Sox and the Yankees are the contenders. The Rays have a very , very slim chance . The O's and Jays chances are well beyond slim .
  20. I think it is fair to say that the Yankees have improved, even without Machado , so far this off season . Fair to say the Rays have also improved. I don't see where the Sox have improved at all . However, we did win the division by a comfortable margin last year . As always , there are all kinds of maybes , could bes , should bes , what ifs and might happens to think about. Injuries are always a big factor. Have our rivals closed the gap enough to overtake us ? We will just have to play the games to find out .
  21. I do think that in today's game , the bullpen is very important . They are involved in the outcome of just about every close game . The advantage of having an elite closer is that the other guys all move back an inning , and you become stronger in every inning . Now , in the postseason, it becomes all hands on deck and you win games any way you can . You never know who the hero might be . But you have to get there first. It is possible to get there without a great pen , but not recommended.
  22. I will try to put it differently. To me , career ERA is the bottom line for a pitcher . Things like OPS against , batting average against , strikeouts , walks , WHIP , etc . are certainly important. But they are basically components of the bottom line . The bottom line tells the story. Preventing runs is the pitcher's goal . The other things are a means to achieving the goal . When judging a pitcher's career , I will always look at his career ERA first .
  23. Then they are getting credit for a third of an inning. Not much help to the ERA . If they happen to give up a run / runs , their ERA takes a beating. Starters can pitch a third of an inning and leave with two men on . If the reliever gets out of it , the starter is off the hook. There are always these little nuances . I'm talking about a career ERA , calculated from a large base of innings . No system is going to be perfect , but career ERA is the best yardstick.
  24. Well , let's see what happens and hope for the best . I worry about getting into a tight game with the Yankees that comes down to the bullpens. It is not normal for me to be pessimistic. I was more upbeat than anyone the last three seasons . Always confident while many fretted. I felt we had every situation covered. I do remember expressing doubt during the post season after the 2013 title. I thought the inactive post season smacked of complacency and we were headed for trouble. I remember some scoffing and saying there was nothing to worry about . When it came to pass just as I feared , no one would admit it . They found other reasons for the failure. Now , I don't expect another collapse like that this year , but I sure don't want to gamble on a wild card win or go home game either . This is a rare opportunity to repeat. Let's not blow it.
  25. The flip side of that is , how miserable would it be if our failure to spend on the bullpen caused the Yanks to beat us out in the division ?
