  1. Pearce is 36 , so the bat speed could be dropping. Who knows ? He might still come around . Not a terrible signing . Low risk , possibly high reward . I do question the wisdom of spending on a first base platoon when there are other areas of need and the budget is tight .
  2. I was just kidding with that one . See my later post in this thread .
  3. JBJ has a career batting average of .234 and a career OPS of 710 . At this stage of his career, it is not likely to get too much better or too much worse than that . It is somewhat below what you would like , but given his defensive prowess , it is acceptable on a team that has other weapons on offense . It would be nice if he was steadier and not so streaky. And I am sure there is a hot streak coming that will bring him closer to his norm . That's the way it is . Take it or leave it . Right now , I'll take it . I don't see a better alternative.
  4. You might be right . I checked with my local bookmaker , Paul " Needlenose " Minagge . He said , " Yeah , that Jeff , he is a good boy. He helps us out with some things."
  5. I liked the movie a lot . " Don't bet " is very good advice .
  6. The Vegas wise guys don't know s*** ?
  7. What good is Fangraphs opinion on their chances of making the playoffs when it changes every day ?
  8. Let's continue to take Jackie's temperature every day . It might help .
  9. Like most things, it goes both ways .
  10. Fangraphs is strictly for stats . They know nothing about odds and gambling . Check with the wise guys for the correct odds .
  11. I don't think the dislike of Swihart is anything personal. Some people are just hoping he fails in Arizona because it would justify their opinion. Some people think their opinion should always be correct .
  12. By any reasonable standard , Bryce Harper is off to a slow start in his Phillies career . Despite that , he has an OBP of .387 and an OPS of 860 . The Phils are leading the N.L. East by three games and are fourth in MLB attendance , averaging 37,000 per game .
  13. Two teams heading in different directions.
  14. Yeah , but the good news is that there are plenty of crappy teams to beat up on in the A.L.
  15. Proof that signing position players is a crap shoot . No reason to spend money on it .
  16. Attendance is down the most for teams that are tanking , aka " rebuilding " . The most logical explanation is that people simply don't want to pay to watch an inferior product. There may be other factors at work also .
  17. With roughly one fourth of the season played ; MLB has been defined by injuries, strikeouts and empty seats . None of that is good. Something for the commissioner and the owners to think about.
  18. Getting to .500 is always the first goal when you get off to a bad start . The O's are just a terrible team . Should win this one easily .
  19. I don't know if he actually asked that . But I have said many times that my top choices would have been Kimbrel , Britton and / or Ottavino . Obviously, it's not my money . I don't think relievers are any more of a crap shoot than third basemen . It's just a myth that is repeated until people believe it. And just about every close game these days comes down to a battle of the bullpens. Ours has been pretty good so far .
  20. I agree . Our pen has been pretty good . Certainly better than most . Hope it continues. I do have concerns about matching up with the Yankee pen , which figures to happen plenty this season .
  21. Robertson is 34 and has been hurt . The Yankees were smart to replace him with Ottavino . That is where judgement comes in . Miller was not good last year . And Cody Allen was awful last year . ( I do remember arguing against the Sox signing him ) So , it is not surprising that they are struggling. I don't think relievers are any more of a crap shoot than anyone else . Lots of mistakes are made all around. But it is hard to win without a good bullpen.
  22. If not for Moreland , we would be in worse shape than we are right now . What does he have to do to get a little respect ?
  23. You could just as easily pick out a few starting pitchers or position players who are not performing up to expectations so far .
  24. I would still opt for quality relievers , as well as quality starters and position players . The problem with throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks , is that most of it just splatters and makes a mess .
  25. Blown save by Seattle. It's tough to get those last three outs .
