  1. As a rule , blown saves lose games . As with any rule , there will be occasional exceptions. But blown saves are not a good thing. You don't want to have too many of them .
  2. The Red Sox are the world champs . We won 119 games last year . We have the highest payroll in baseball. Even suggesting that we can win the second wild card ( a gimmick that shouldn't even exist ) is an embarrassment. The goal has to be to win the A.L. East . A goal we have achieved three straight years.
  3. The chances were pretty good? Really ? I cannot comprehend that .
  4. Might not be the smartest thing to spend your wad and then some building a great team , then have nothing left for the pen . After all , just about every close game comes down to depending on the bullpen. A third of the way into the season , we have nine blown saves , even though many think they have done well so far . We are currently in third place , eight games out . We have won three straight A.L. East titles . I would like another .
  5. The foundation of a strong bullpen is a lights out closer. Then , a good eighth inning set up man . Then a good lefty / righty combination to match up in the seventh . Throw in a couple of other good arms and you have a strong bullpen. This is a tried and true system. You don't need the boys in the dweeb room sorting through their multitude of stats and coming up with some cockamamie new ideas about bullpens and " leverage situations."
  6. After doing a good job of bouncing back from a dismal start to the season , the Sox have slipped back into mediocrity the last couple of weeks. I think it is important for them to make a statement in this series. Although it is still relatively early in the season , we can't afford to fall any further behind the Yankees. It will be tough to catch them when they get their A - team back .
  7. There are a number of N.L. contenders who need bullpen help. Getting a good reliever may not be so easy without giving up more than you might like .
  8. As far as using Eovaldi as a closer : Have we backtracked on the idea that you don't want to spend big bucks on a closer ? Have we backtracked on the idea that a starter is more important / valuable than a closer? Have we backtracked on the idea that the bullpen is fine ? Just asking .
  9. Sox are bringing up Josh Taylor from Pawtucket. He's not the greatest, but he is a lefty , something that has been missing from the pen . If Cora is going to insist on using Barnes in 7th and 8th inning " leverage " situations, he will need to mix and match after that . Maybe a lefty can help .
  10. R.I.P. Buckner . Can you imagine if there was a Sox forum back in 1986 ? A game thread ? Can you imagine the brutal treatment he would have received from Sox fans ? Now , we get all of the obligatory statements about what a great player he was , how his career shouldn't be defined by one play and how that play really wasn't the reason the Sox lost the Series anyway .
  11. This board is very enlightening. Personally, I have found out that everything I knew , or thought I knew , about baseball is now completely wrong . The game has been reinvented by some young geniuses who otherwise wouldn't know a jockstrap from a G string .
  12. Other than the manager , the hitting, the pitching and the defense ; all is working very well . The fact that we are now eight games behind the Yankees B - team is just a random fluke . We are breaking in a new , more modern system this year . It is working just fine , as long as you don't look at the scoreboard.
  13. Koji will always be remembered as a big part of that magical 2013 , Boston Strong , championship team . A team on a mission. Aside from that , he was a consistently fine reliever for a number of years . His career numbers are excellent.
  14. The " rest " days are dictated by the boys from analytics. Their studies have shown that it is beneficial. Possibly losing an easily winnable game is not a concern of the boys . Boone has to go along with it . That's the way the game is played these days .
  15. I've been there . I know the feeling, the emotions . Best wishes .
  16. Eduardo Rodriguez now has an ERA of 5.43
  17. The point is ; you need a good closer . And if you have one , don't use him in the 7th inning . Get a good set up man .
  18. Another scene from last night in MLB . The Braves took a 3 - 1 lead into the bottom of the ninth in San Fran . The immortal Luke Jackson promptly gave up three runs and the ballgame . This has happened a lot . Closing ain't easy . Even though some refuse to see it .
  19. Not sure what you are even talking about . Blew a late the inning before ????? Did you see the game ? The Cubs had a 1 - 0 lead . The Phils scored 2 in the 7th , to go up 2 - 1 . The Cubs won it with 2 in the 9th off of Nicasio . My point is about blown saves .
  20. I think this thread is mainly just an attempt to be provocative . I have noticed that we do see that every so often on here .
  21. I watched the end of the Cubs / Phillies game last night . The Phils took a 2 -1 lead into the bottom of the ninth . They brought in Juan Nicasio to close it . I thought , there is no way this jabroni will not blow it . You didn't even have to look , you just knew . Sure enough. Minutes later it was over . 3 - 2 .Cubs win . That is happening a lot .
  22. Unless I am mistaken, it is only two games in London , not four .
  23. We have lost a few . Actually, we have not done too badly so far , compared to some other teams . However , last year on this date , we were in first place , 18 games over .500 , and Kimbrel already had 15 saves . This year , we are in third place , 2 games over .500 , and 6 games behind the injury riddled Yankees . And I'm not sure who our closer even is . I do realize that there are other reasons for this situation. But even when it comes to something as simple as Mookie leading off , why look to change something that is working so well ? To me , it just doesn't make sense .
  24. I don't know the answer to that . I do know that there are plenty of blown saves so far this year . I'm not the smartest guy in the room, but I know what I like . When it comes to bullpens, I like a lights out closer , a good set up man , a couple of good 6th and 7th inning guys , a good lefty and a long reliever . Everyone knowing their role . It is a tried and true system for success . I would not mess with that .
  25. The Sox are now six games behind the injury riddled Yankees . This is becoming a cause for concern . We can't let this gap continue to grow . We are already starting to hear rumblings about how we can still always win a wild card . That is hardly acceptable for a championship team that won 108 games lat season . It is about time to wake up .
