    Given the sorry state of the American League, the Red Sox could probably win 90 games just by showing up .

    It is a concern that we are five games behind the Yankees , who have been decimated by injuries. Not a good sign of things to come .

    It might not improve the team , but it would make it easier to watch them win or lose .

    Seems like we are counting on our problem child , Steven Wright , more than we should be . ( He will solidify the bullpen and also the rotation. ) I think , if we take problem child Wright back at all , there has to be three conditions. 1 - Don't hang the knuckleball. 2 - Don't beat your wife . 3 - Don't take steroids. On second thought, let's not take him back at all . Let's find a better way .

    If we are thinking of getting rid of anyone, let's start in the announce booth . Dave O' Brien has been there way too long . Listening to him and his annoying voice and inane drivel is the worst part of the ballgame.

    Starters just don't go deep in games very often these days . That's how it is . And the bullpen is more than just the ninth inning. If you still had Kimbrel , or a reasonable alternative , you would still have Barnes and Brasier as well . The bullpen becomes deeper and better in every inning .

    If " clutch " exists , the Sox did their best to disprove it last night .

    Don't trust your " eye test " . Go by defensive WAR / UZR , which is essentially someone else's " eye test ."

    I would tell the metrics people that defensive WAR should be taken with a grain of salt.

    Pretty sure the offense is better than they have shown so far and will certainly improve . I can't say that about the bullpen.

    Okay . I know about calling up an extra guy for the doubleheader . But I thought Lakins would go back down .

    I wonder if Hernandez will stay for at least a while . He might help the bullpen . Or he could could start and Velazquez could go to the pen .

    I would question a couple of moves Cora made last night . Pinch hitting Pearce for Devers . Pearce has been looking absolutely lost at the plate . Leaving Lakins in . Should have used Barnes and tried to keep it a one run game . As it turned out , one run would have been enough , but you don't know that at the time .

    The way the game is today , the bullpen comes into play just about every day . If it is substandard, it will be exposed . Say what you will , the pen is still the number one concern about this team .

    The pen didn't exactly help their ERA today . Or any of the myriad other stats either .

    Games are decided by runs scored . ERA is important . It is the bottom line for a pitcher . The other things are all just contributing factors .

    Of course players are paid based upon their past accomplishments. What else are you supposed to go by ? Your magic Chrystal Ball ? Fangraphs projections ? Harold Nerdwell's analytics printout ?

    Report is that Eovaldi will have surgery tomorrow . He had the same surgery last year and missed two months .

    We hear a lot about Kiermaier's prowess in center . I was not overly impressed by what I saw in this series .

    Probably a little better . New York , at full or close to full strength, is easily better . Anyway , losing two games at Yankee Stadium is always a possibility. I don't put too much significance in it .

    I think the Sox and Yankees are both better than the Rays . As I have stated , I think the Rays have done a commendable job of overachieving, but the talent level is just not there . I would love to have Snell and Glasnow however .
