  1. I don't see the logic in that . If they were " hobbies of the super rich " , they wouldn't care so much about the bottom line profits . This situation shows that they truly are businesses. And businesses do sometimes have labor problems........... And the problems will get a lot worse for both the owners and the players if more and more fans lose interest.
  2. Shaughnessy is probably the lead sports writer for John Henry's newspaper, the Globe . I think it is fair to say that he does probably have access to some inside information.
  3. Things are not like they used to be . A lot of people, especially the younger generation, are not addicted to the sport of baseball. All the little gimmicks and promos that MLB has tried has not changed that very much . It is not a good idea for any business to alienate their customers. And it certainly is not a good idea for the owners and players to alienate the fans at this time.
  4. Bloom decimated the farm.
  5. The owners are on the verge of bankruptcy. And the players income is near poverty level. We need your help now . If all fans would contribute nineteen dollars a month we could save them all .. It's really just pennies a day . Operators are standing by to take your call. Please call now , and we will send you a beautiful tote bag with the MLB logo. ( As long as supplies last.)
  6. Assuming the owners and the player's Union reach an agreement, it will be interesting to see how many players still decide not to play . And the repercussions, if any , if they do so .
  7. I think that , by any objective viewpoint, Michael Jordan would be considered the G.O.A.T. ( Some younger fans might choose LeBron . ) Wilt and Russell were great in their own right , but they were really the first athletic big men in the game , and they were able to dominate . Not to take anything away from them , but they simply did not have the skills of Jordan , Magic , Bird or The Big O .
  8. Thunder , My advice is to do what you feel is best for you . Taking a break from this could be beneficial. If / when you do come back , my advice would be to not take anything posted here too seriously. Keep your sense of humor . This forum is basically just a sideshow in the carnival of life . Remember the song lyrics , " Life is just a bowl of cherries, so live and laugh at it all ." It's just a dumb song , but it makes a lot of sense if you think about it . All the best .
  9. How about robot " fans " wearing Nike tee shirts ?
  10. The Cora story is far from finished. He obviously did something wrong . He is paying the penalty now . As far as his effectiveness as a manager ; He had a really great team and he handled it well and won a championship without really working up a sweat . The next year he ran into adversity and really had no answers , at least not until it was too late . So , the results are mixed . My feeling is that he deserves another chance , and almost certainly will manage again next year . And it very well could be back in Boston.
  11. Some folks like to throw chum in the waters . The sharks are well advised to fight the urge to jump on it . It saves shark lives , not to mention internet brawls .
  12. The owners and the players fighting each other right now is not good for the game , the fans or the country. To say the least . If that is how it's going to be , just call the season off .
  13. We checked on the Sale situation with Red Sox chief medical officer , Dr . Vinnie Boombatz . It went like this : Reporter : " Why did Chris Sale have Tommy John surgery at this time ?" Dr. Boombatz : " Well , the first surgery of this kind was performed on a pitcher named " Tommy John " . It was quite successful . So they named it after him . Hence , Tommy John surgery . I hope that answers your question . "
  14. Lets face the reality here . There is a very strong possibility that there will not be any MLB games this year . And it gets stronger every day. The NFL and college football are no sure thing either.
  15. Harm , Interesting idea . And it sounds plausible.......... Well , except for the last sentence .
  16. No question . Not taking anything away from Tyson. He certainly was elite . He was still in his prime when he fought Douglas . And Holyfield beat him as well. Nobody beat Mayweather .
  17. Going back in time , the great champion , Joe Louis , had a couple of good lines . Regarding a particularly elusive opponent , he said " He can run , but he can't hide ." After he knocked out a foe with a body shot , a reporter said to him , " he didn't like getting hit in the gut ". Joe replied simply ( if somewhat ungrammatically ) " Who do " ?
  18. " Before Douglas " should not be the cut off point . Tyson was more dynamic , aggressive and entertaining than Mayweather . But his overall record was not as good as Floyd's. Personally , I don't think Tyson , in his prime , would have stood a chance against Ali in his prime.
  19. Ali's skills did start to diminish in the 70's , but most of his memorable fights were in that decade . Can't argue with Mayweather . He is undefeated , and fought all the top guys . And he didn't make the mistake that so many did by hanging around too long.
  20. Yeah. Grady Little for leaving Pedro in . McNamara , along with Buckner , for 1986. The list goes on .
  21. Thanks Harmony.
  22. Saw Ted play many times . I used to always sit in the left field seats just for that purpose.
  23. One of my earliest Sox memories is of a journeyman right hander , Denny Galehouse , being blamed for losing a playoff game to Cleveland in 1948. It seemed unfair . It stuck with me and turned me against the idea of scapegoating in general . Hence my screen name .
  24. Thanks Slasher.
  25. Thanks old-timer . I'm the same age . Saw Ted Williams play many times .
