The minor league system is appropriately called the farm . There comes a time when you have to harvest the crops ( prospects ) . You keep what you need for sustainment and market the rest for the best deal you can make . You can't hold on to them indefinitely . We have done very well with that . Had much success . Then , you need to sow the field all over again . Grow the next crop . That is where we have some problems . MLB has made it increasingly difficult to replenish the farm if you have been successful . You need to find a way to deal with that without deliberately being unsuccessful , aka tanking .

Do we really want to save billionaire John Henry a little money and suffer through one or more seasons of dismal baseball ? I know I don't . A baseball season is a long time . A good chunk of our very limited time on this mortal coil .

It doesn't matter how many 8 WAR seasons Betts has in him . He is the best player on the Sox , one of the very best in the game . A keeper if there ever was one . You don't let a guy like that get away .

Yeah . I wouldn't go crazy with the spending , but I would definitely try to keep Betts and Martinez . Lose Porcello , and try Hernandez there . Lose Panda , Nunez , Moreland ,Pearce , Leon , Wright and possibly JBJ . Go with Chavis , Marco and possibly Dalbec . Just have to wait out Pedroia . Hope for the best with Sale , Price and Eovaldi . Pick up a couple of bullpen arms . Stay competitive and if you go slightly over the cap , live with it .

The solution is to spend the money . Stop being scared of the luxury tax . Stop kidding people . Stay competitive . If need be , ride out the bad contracts . (Might just have to live with some of the mistakes .) Get rid of the easily replaceable dead wood and promote a couple of the youngsters , but you need to keep Betts and ( if possible ) Martinez . Don't gut the strength of the team . I wonder how much revenue will be lost by not making the post season this year ? We don't want a repeat of that . The Red Sox are a big market team . The goal always should be to make the post season .

Training camp next year will be run differently . Pick whatever reason suits you , but things will not be done the same way again .

There you go . Already we are seeing the alternate reasons for what we all know is coming .

That's not the case at all . The fact is I was one of the very few who saw the storm clouds gathering way back in the off season . I mentioned both Dombrowski's complacency , the bullpen situation , and Cora's lackadaisical spring training regimen . I was shot down then on all points by the same ones who are now still grasping for answers . Where was I wrong ? There is enough blame to go around for both D.D. and Cora . The storm clouds back in February were real . Both Cora and D.D. were remiss . But only one was fired .

Really ? Seriously ? Actually , the much maligned Pom had a terrific year in 2017 . He is now healthy , setting up for the Brewers and racking up the strikeouts . Where is Espinosa ? It is a major , major stretch to think we might have won without Sale and Kimbrel . Highly doubtful . And we actually won an unprecedented three straight A.L. East titles without our dear , departed prospects . I will concede that Thornburg was a bust .

The results are there. Trading these guys paid off as hoped and expected. Could we have won without it ? While anything is possible , I seriously doubt it .

No offense to anybody , but ruling that three foul balls is a strikeout is one of the worst ideas to come along . Even a nimrod like Manfred would not propose something like that . -
Without a doubt , Cora will change the spring training program next year . But there will be those on here who will insist that there is a different reason for the change than this year's problems . That's S.O.P. around here .

The number of injuries in MLB this year is mind boggling . I have never seen anything like it . The MLB trade rumors site should be renamed The MLB injury report . The powers that be really need to look into this situation and look for causes and solutions . This is not good for the game .

That is just being smart in evaluating these kids . You keep the ones that can truly help you . Trade the others.

If Cora gets so much credit when we win , then he has to bear the onus when we don't. Simple as that .

You don't want to trade them. And you don't want to hoard them . What would you do with them ?

More strikeouts would not do much to create some action in the game . Bad idea . Make it the umpires responsibility to keep the pace of play moving quickly . It could be done . -
The White Sox moved Moncada off second base over to third . Evidently , he was not a good second baseman . But some people love to hug their prospects . Prospects are only good for two things : Filling the vacancies needed to win or dealing them for someone who can . Hoarding them is a disorder .

The simplest way to quicken the games is to give the umpire the authority to keep things moving . There is far too much dawdling permitted now . -
They had to include Kopech in the Sale deal . Not sure what that has to do with Espinosa . I don't know what the official rankings were , or who composes them . Or how much value they have . In my opinion , a kid with no track record beyond a brief stint in the Gulf Coast rookie league is not going to get you Sale . If you think it would , fine . There is no way to prove or disprove it .

Just because somebody mentions an unproven kid in the same breath as Pedro Martinez is not reason to trade Chris Sale for the kid . He might trade a Pomeranz , but surely not a Sale . No way .

The idea that Sale could have been had for Espinosa is highly doubtful . While he was greatly hyped , the " next Pedro " had no record of success beyond the rookie league . And he still doesn't . We have to be realistic . Espinosa willl never be another Sale , much less another Pedro . Heck , he will probably not even be another Pomeranz .
