    It has gotten pretty expensive to go to an MLB game , especially so if you want good seats . A lot of folks either don't go or don't go as often . Even so , attendance is generally good when teams give the fans a reason to go to the ballpark and spend their money . Unfortunately , quite a few teams are not doing that .

    A few innings ? And after a full winter's rest ? I think the general consensus is that the spring training regimen was a mistake . Not that I blame it for everything that went wrong . But no matter how you slice it , Cora did not have a very good year .

    There are hypothetical questions , and then there is reality . The reality is we did not trade Betts or Bogaerts . And we did not trade Devers . The reality is we won three straight A.L. East titles . When is the last time that happened ? There is no reason to regret any of the deals .

    No question . I said from the start that a strong and deep bullpen is more important in today's game than it ever has been . We were lacking this . No matter what you say about the rotation , when you are blowing half of your saves it is not good .

    You could make an All Star team of the prospects we traded . An All Star team in the Rookie League , that is .

    You could debate whether , or how much , Cora's training camp contributed to the pitching problems . But the fact is he had no answers to dealing with it all . The Yankees and Rays certainly had many issues with their starters also , but they worked through it . If Cora deserves praise for last year , he has to take some blame for this one .

    Dispute it if you will . But the bottom line stands for itself . And the bottom line is not good .

    I don't think Dombrowski deserved to be fired for one bad season . And I don't think Cora should be fired for one bad season . But we do need to be objective here . By any reasonable standard , Cora did not do a very good job this year . I don't know how anyone could dispute that .

    Big deal . How many of them would have been any help to us this year ? One or maybe two ? And not that much help anyway . And how many have reached the level of the guys we acquired for them ? Have any ? An unprecedented three straight A.L. East titles and one ring , yet we still weep over the ones who got away .

    The hype for Espinosa was all a misunderstanding . Some scout said he was " the next Pedro ". But he meant Pedro Beato , not Pedro Martinez .

    Maybe someday they will say , " Remember that guy Notin on TalkSox , and how he got Dombrowski fired ? "

    The new boss may make a lot of changes or maybe just a few tweaks . It should make for an interesting off season .

    I have heard most of the announcers in MLB . To me , Dave O'Brien is one of the worst . He is incredibly boring and repetitive . We all love Jerry , but he is kind of like the pitcher who has lost something off the fastball and is trying to get by without it . Even the uninhibited Eck looks like he has been told to be careful what he says . Having said that , I don't think the NESN ratings depend all that much on the announcers . When the team plays poorly , there will be fewer people tuning in and more empty seats at Fenway .

    The Sox organization seems a little dysfunctional to me . They brought in Theo , who had great success and put an end to the dreaded curse . Then they irritated him so much that he left for a new challenge . Ben came in and tried to emulate Theo . He had some success , but then made some mistakes and faltered . They stripped him of most of his authority and pretty much forced his resignation too . Enter Dombrowski . D.D. had tremendous success until stumbling this year . He was summarily fired at midnight , during a Patriots game .And we weren't even given a reason . No press conference . No explanation . No nothing . Not a very good scene .

    John Henry has often been heralded as a great owner . But let's be real ; his success is largely due to his willingness to spend big . Now , he seems to be backing off the spending a bit . For the owners to be scared off by the " Luxury Tax " that they themselves insisted on putting in , is laughable indeed . The putrid Kansas City Royals just sold for two billion , for heavens sake . These guys are soaking the fans , raking in the money , always looking for ways to hold down salaries and many always have their hand out for " revenue sharing " dollars .

    We have had all season to evaluate these borderline guys in the minors . I don't know what more insight can be had by watching them play a few games in the bigs . Tanking is for the losers . I would hate to see the Red Sox sink that low.

    The best way to win a championship is to consistently make the playoffs . The way to consistently make the playoffs is to consistently have a very good team . Making the playoffs does not guarantee a championship , but it is always a necessary first step.

    The first four hitters in the batting order are the strength of this team . If at all possible , you want to keep them . Losing any of them would be a detriment to winning .

    Last year everything was great . Nothing but seashells and balloons . A ring . A parade . Cora is the greatest ever . In Cora we trust . Etc . , etc. This year was much different . A complacent off season . A lackadaisical spring training . Adversity. Hard times . Struggling starters . Blown saves . No late rallies . A trouncing by our hated arch enemy . Now , some indifferent , uninspired baseball . Through it all , Cora has not come up with anything whatsoever to reverse the disappointing performance . Now , I don't think he should be fired . ( I also don't think Dombrowski should have been fired ) . All that sounds too much like " What have you done for me lately " . But let's at least stop calling Cora the " greatest ". He is just one more manager who is going to have to improve and get better results in the future . The future starts now .

    I have criticized D.D. for some things , especially this year . But when he makes a move that works out just as he had hoped , I can't knock it .

    We are not in on these negotiations , so we don't really know what it takes to get the deal done . If you think we overpaid , okay . But the bottom line is we got the results we were looking for . And that counts for a lot . You can't kill Dombrowski for everything .

    We may have , but the chances are we would not . You were opposed to that deal . But it worked out just as planned . And you are still against it . Hard to argue .
