  1. From what we have seen of Whitlock , as compared to the guys the Yankees kept, you have to question their ability to judge pitching talent.
  2. If old George were still alive , batting coach Marcus Thames would be on the unemployment line with Boone soon to follow. The son seems either not to care as much or is a lot more tolerant of failure.
  3. Interesting that LaRussa used his closer in game two with a four run lead. He had already picked up the save in game one. Not too many managers would do that.
  4. There is always a lot of publicity and hype that comes with playing in New York. Some guys become overrated as a result. Aaron Hicks is a good example. He is 31 years old. A career .234 hitter , with a career OPS of .730. Are the Yankees really counting on big things from him ? A lot of the Yank's overhyped prospects are in the same situation. You hear names thrown around so much that you start thinking they are something special. In reality , they are not.
  5. To me , Boone comes off as an indecisive leader. His interviews are peppered with expressions like " a little bit " , " kind of " , " sort of " , etc. Even in this day of " players managers " , you do need to be more assertive. We will see what his " going off " on the underachieving Yankees results in.
  6. The bandwagon is filling up fast.
  7. With all the talk about Domingo German's domestic violence suspension , a couple of things are forgotten : 1 - He is not exactly a kid. He turns 29 in August . 2 - He really isn't all that good anyway . A career ERA of 4.6 . Sometimes guys get so much ink that people tend to overrate their ability. This guy is nothing much.
  8. It is a strange phenomenon. Some Sox fans actually hope that former Sox players ( even standouts who helped the Sox to win ) fall on their face and flop with their new team. Now , I can see it if they go to the Yankees , but that's about it. Otherwise, I do not understand the thinking. Price will have some trouble cracking the Dodger's stellar rotation, but I would like to see him do well unless he is facing the Sox. I certainly take no glee seeing him struggle.
  9. Kluber is a shell of his former self. If you held him up to your ear , you could actually hear the Atlantic Ocean.
  10. They have Hall of Fames for a lot of things now. Some of them evidently have a very low bar. Baseball's Hall , while not without it's flaws , is probably more legit than most.
  11. More proof that blondes have more fun.
  12. The randomness of baseball helps to show just how good the 2018 Red Sox team really was. 108 wins in the regular season. 11 - 3 in the post season against three really good opponents. It doesn't get much better than that.
  13. It's only a game. Not life and death. Part of the fun is screaming " Kill the ump." " Are you blind , Blue ? " " Get new glasses." Etc. And watching a Billy Martin kick dirt and yell at the ump until he was ejected. Remy and O'Brien don't help with their constant complaining about the strike zone. Use the robots to vacuum the dugout and clubhouse, not to call balls and strikes. If an umpire is clearly incompetent, he should be demoted to AAA. Try to relax and enjoy the games .
  14. The " Groundhog Day " game thread .
  15. In the words of that great American , Gomer Pyle , USMC ; " Surprise , surprise . "
  16. Maybe the Rays should have major concerns.
  17. I would like them to remind us yet again that a replay has to be conclusive to overturn the call on the field.
  18. Closing ain't easy. The Rays managed two legitimate blown saves last night . I thought that last kid was going to hyperventilate on the mound.
  19. The announcers say so many stupid things that it is hard to keep track of them.
  20. No . We have way too many stats as it is. I would rather keep things a little simpler.
  21. I'm not going to make a list , but I think I have a pretty good understanding of the different scenarios. One thing I don't like is when a guy can get charged with a blown save when he is only pitching in a " hold " situation. You can't get a " save " unless you get the final out. To me , call it whatever you want , but the goal is to close out the victory in a close or relatively close game. It hurts extra when you lose those.
  22. Yes , I do. I do want to know how many homers a guy hit. Not that interested in the launch angle or exit velocity.
  23. It's a little flaw in the save rule. Not important. Dobnak will not be among the save leaders. A true closer very seldom picks up a save in that manner. It is insignificant.
  24. Baseball is a team sport. Of course much depends on your teammates. It doesn't detract from individual performance. The Dobnak thing is just a fluke. You could do that with just about anything. Find some extreme example to discredit the whole thing.
  25. As the radio voice of the Yankees , John Sterling, would say , " That's baseball , Suzyn. " The analytics addicts would spend hours coming up with stats to explain it all. Probably invent a few new stats along the way.
