  1. I think Cora does an outstanding job. One of the best managers in the game. As for Bloom , he still has something to prove. He has been in the business for 16 years and only has a den full of participation trophies to show for it. Our core players , the five All Stars , we're all inherited by Bloom. He still needs to win one.
  2. Stop worrying, get warrioring. Kind of catchy.
  3. I am sure Sale trusts the front office. They have paid him a boatload of money. In five years , we have gotten a total of 35 wins from him. It is time now for a few more. I keep hearing about what a warrior he is . So let's get going.
  4. I'm happy too. But remember, there was an 86 year waiting period.
  5. " Why , even if we blow it now , it was still a great year." In my view , that is the wrong way to think . Both for fans and for Sox management. The deadline was a disappointment . Now , get Sale and Houck in the rotation as soon as possible and try for the gold medal. Don't settle for " wait till next year."
  6. Look at it this way. We still have a very good team. It could be worse. You could be a Cubs fan. ( Which I am when it comes to the N.L. ) After losing Lester , Darvish and Schwarber in the pre season , they have now lost Bryant , Baez, Rizzo, Kimbrel , Chafin , Tepera and Marisnick at the deadline. Can you imagine what a similar scenario would be in Boston?
  7. Here is the problem: The future is always in the future. It never really gets here. You do need to live in the present also. In this case , you have a shot at the gold . You have to go for it. Who knows what 2022 will bring? If it goes sour , do we say " Well , 2023 looks good." " Wait till next year" is as old as the hills.
  8. " and for what" seems a little disingenuous. The Yankees had a serious deficiency in left handed power , especially when they play at the stadium. Gallo and Rizzo correct that, as well as providing quality defense.
  9. If Bloom took a dump in Fenway's center field , there would be some on here saying he is working hard to help fertilize. For a guy who has never won anything, he seems to be above criticism.
  10. Has there ever been a more active trade deadline? It has to really suck to be a fan of a seller team. Hope springs eternal for the buyers.
  11. The good news for Kimbrel. Going to a contender and won't have to move. Just across town.
  12. It's too late for Berrios to save the Jays this year. If you watch them enough , you will see that they just don't play good , sound baseball. Maybe next year for them.
  13. My two cents: I think the plan is definitely to put Schwarber at first. Another starting pitcher should now be the priority. But the return of Sale and the addition of Houck to the rotation could well be the answer. Kimbrel is probably the best closer since Mariano hung them up , but I think the bullpen is fine as is. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. We can take our best shot at the brass ring with what we have right now , plus what we are getting back.
  14. Looks like the Dodgers are pushing hard for Scherzer and Turner from the Nats. Very active trade deadline this year. More to come for sure.
  15. Gallo is the lefty power bat the Yanks have been lacking. They would be in better shape today if they had him all year. Probably too late now.
  16. It seems to me that first base is the area of biggest need . Rizzo would be a great addition to both the offense and defense.
  17. I don't think it is the start of a house cleaning. Probably just making some room for additions. I can't believe they are giving up at this point.
  18. The trade talks between G.M.s are all private. All of the rumors , proposals and speculation are just for fun. I am sure there will be some surprises, both with what happens and what doesn't happen. And some fans will be happy and some won't. It will all be over in three days. Then the final third of the season. I think the Sox are looking good no matter what they do or don't do.
  19. I'm guessing you have cable. With Satellite, they usually give a choice of feeds.
  20. We need a new , more comprehensive stat. One that takes into account not only the dimensions and particular quirks of every ballpark a guy has ever pitched in and the weather conditions on every day or night he pitched. But also , the lifetime OPS of every hitter he faced and the overall ability of every one of his pitcher teammates. Then , we need the CERA of every catcher he threw to , and the defensive ability , or lack of same , of every teammate playing behind him. Then we need an evaluation of all his managers and pitching coaches and their tendencies . And that's just for starters. We need the geek squad to get to work on this now . When they finish , they can start another web site that we can bookmark and refer to daily. Then and only then will we really be able to accurately rank every pitcher who has ever lived.
  21. The flaws in ERA should tend to balance out over a long career. It is still the simplest, best stat for determining a pitcher's performance. The whole idea is to not allow the opponent to score runs. Some folks want to make everything complicated. And that's okay. But I still think career ERA tells the story in an easy to compute nutshell. The other stats serve to build and explain the bottom line , which is ERA.
  22. Tommy Lykitis: " It's bad strategy to play for an inside straight. The odds are against you." Notin: " Not true. Why back in 2017, Chicago's Henry Schmelding hit an inside straight four times in one of his Friday night poker games. That proves it can be done. Tommy Lykitis: " Okay. I give up."
  23. Boone should have been fired long ago. He simply is not a good game manager. Loaisiga is just back from Covid , threw 20 pitches yesterday and was kind of fortunate to not blow that game. Green would have been a better choice unless he is still shell shocked from Thursday night. But Britton is a proven, experienced late inning reliever/closer. I don't think he blows a four run lead. Boone is confused and has lost his way.
  24. Over the long haul , ERA ,while not perfect, is still the definitive stat for a pitcher. The object for them is to not give up runs. You can play around with the multitude of other stats , analytics , etc. all you want , but ERA is still the bottom line. Show me a pitcher with a good career ERA and I will show you a good pitcher. This applies to Porcello or anyone else.
  25. I think what happens is that we form an opinion about players , either pro or con. And we stick with it. Objectivity is a lost art.
