This is getting closer to a fair deal, and opens the door for a discussion. Florial is a CF and so fills a huge need for the Mets. Problem is, Florial is such a boom or bust prospect (contact issues)--it would depend on the Mets internal evaluations. Unless I missed something, I don't see the Mets having an interest in Toorreyes. Adams and Medina are nice additions, but I don't know if they are good enough to carry the trade over the finish line. I'm not making this trade if I'm the Mets. I would rather wait to see if I can get a better offer for Degrom in the offseason. I'm also not a big believer in Florial. But if O.Minaya has a lot of power within the organization, and has some kind of fetish for Florial, maybe this offer would be good enough. The fact that Florial isn't playing now is extremely problematic--we can't evaluate his progress when it comes to the contact issue and that makes it harder to sign off on him. If I'm the Mets, my counter offer would be Degrom and T.Frazier for Andujar, Sheffield, and either Adams or Medina. The Mets need a future 3b as well as a future CF. I want Andujar over Florial.

If the Red Sox decide to move Price to the bullpen in October, and decide to make S.Wright the fourth starter in the playoffs (behind Sale, Porcello, and Rodriguez) I don't think the decision would be an overreaction. There is an empirical, statistical basis for the decision--Price has a record of failure as a playoff starter and he seems to have no answer for the Yankees lineup. Moreover, if the final 3 games of the regular season matter, it would make sense to start someone else besides Price in that series.
-
Why would the Mets have any interest in C.Frazier? They already have a glut of corner outfielders. Cespedes and Bruce (immovable contracts) to go along with younger players in Conforto and Brandon Nimmo. Moreover, with Peter Alonso looking more and more like the future Met 1b, the organization has considered moving D.Smith to a corner outfield position. The Mets need a CF, a 3b of the future (Frazier isn't the long term answer and the Mets can probably trade him if necessary--only signed through 2019), a 2b, and a catcher. The last thing they need is Clint Frazier. If the Mets trade Degrom, they will likely expect to receive several pitching prospects to go along with a position player. They aren't going to settle for a team's second rate pitching prospects. The Yankees best pitching prospect is Sheffield--it isn't Adams and it isn't Loaisiga. To get one of the best SPs in baseball, who is also under control for 2 and 1/2 years, the Yankees will have to give up some valuable pieces. They can't just unload a bunch of B prospects for Degrom. To put together a reasonable deal, you have to consider the needs of the other team, not just the needs of the Yankees. You shouldn't be calling anyone an "idiot," not after posting an absolutely absurd trade proposal for Degrom that has no basis in reality.

jacksonianmarch believes the Yankees can acquire Degrom by giving the Mets C.Frazier and C.Adams. Yeah, that's really going to happen. . . . You're living on planet delusional, dummy.

Who Should the Red Sox Trade For?
Fan_since_Boggs replied to CharlieWhigg's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Possible Red Sox rotation in 2020: Sale (resign) Rodriguez Price Shawaryn--has middle of the rotation potential Beeks--has middle of the rotation potential Other possibilities: B.Johnson, Wright (may hang around forever like T.Wakefield). I presume the Red Sox will not resign Porcello. Shawaryn and Beeks are important pieces--they will be cheap and controllable while the Red Sox pay big bucks to Price and Sale. -
You're a stupid troll. Why don't you find a Yankees forum and get out of here. Oh, that's right, you don't want to find a Yankees forum, you would rather stay in a Red Sox forum so that you can troll. The prospects you list aren't good enough to bring back 2 and 1/2 years of control of one of the best pitchers in baseball (Degrom). If you don't know that, you must be dumb. Look what Cashman did with Cole. He tried to acquire him by offering second rate prospects like C.Adams and Frazier. How did that work out, dummy?

Who Should the Red Sox Trade For?
Fan_since_Boggs replied to CharlieWhigg's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
I agree--the asking price will be greater. The only way this happens is if Scooter beats up his girlfriend or is caught with ten pounds of cocaine. Chatham is a decent prospect but he hasn't proven himself at the Double A level and so his trade value is somewhat limited. To trade for Scooter G., you would probably have to start with J.Beeks or M.Shawaryn, and then add to the package from there. -
You're a troll. You're a Yankees fan who posts on a Red Sox forum -- that says it all, dummy.

The Yankees don't have the pieces in the farm system to trade for a pitcher like Degrom. They have the pieces for Hamels but not Degrom. To get Degrom, the Yankees will need to part with Andujar or Torres. Since the Yankees aren't trading Torres, that leaves Andujar as the only reasonable way to acquire Degrom. C.Adams and C.Frazier just don't have enough trade value to bring back a stud pitcher. They would be decent add-ons in a trade, but they aren't going to be a centerpiece. Sheffield is a nice prospect, but he doesn't profile as an ace. A fair deal for Degrom would be built around Andujar and Sheffield with another prospect included. This isn't the time for Cashman to get cheap and squeeze another team, his leading philosophy of life. He got burned when he tried to do that with G.Cole. He needs to be aggressive and acquire Degrom. Once the Yankees obtain Degrom, they are easily the favorites to go all the way. In contrast, if the Yankees acquire a guy like Happ or Hamels, I'm not sure if they move in front of the Red Sox or Astros.

It was a disgraceful performance. Price just doesn't have the stuff to be anything more than a middling starting pitcher, a guy you can't rely on in the playoffs. Price belongs in the bullpen in the playoffs, but I don't know if the Red Sox can move him there. They need Wright or Pomeranz to step up and stay healthy. If that happens, I would expect Price to be in the bullpen in October, but I don't know if the Red Sox are going to get sufficient production out of Wright or Pomeranz this season. There is something wrong with Pomeranz, his velocity is down. Even if the Red Sox use Wright in the bullpen (to ease up on the knee) for the rest of the regular season, maybe they can move him to the starting rotation in the playoffs. As long as Wright is pitching well, I would prefer that strategy over starting David Price in the playoffs.
-
That's true. And there is also a tremendous drop off from Severino to the next best Yankees starter. We will see who Cashman adds to the starting rotation. If he gets Degrom, the Yankees will have two aces, putting them in great shape for the playoffs. But I don't know if Cashman will pay the price for Degrom. If Cashman can't rip off a team, he usually doesn't make a deal.
-
Thanks for the clarification. True, the wild card winner could be a 100 win team this year, but the drop off from Sale to the next best Red Sox starter is so extreme that the wild card game would greatly weaken the Red Sox in the division round. For example, the Yankees would rather play a weakened Red Sox team than the division winning Guardians in the first round--the Yankees would face Sale only once; in contrast, Kluber will pitch twice in the division round (if necessary).
-
But let's say the Red Sox burn Sale in the Wild Card game (they will be forced to use him in that game). Let's say the Red Sox play the Yankees in the next round (quite possible). That puts the Red Sox in a bad spot because they can't pitch Sale twice in the division round, forcing the Red Sox to rely heavily on Porcello or Rodriguez (one of the two will pitch 2 games in the division series). Price is pretty much an automatic loss against the Yankees, which is why I would turn to S.Wright if healthy. Of course, the Red Sox would face the same problem if they win the wild card and have to face the Astros in the division round. The Red Sox burn Sale in the wild card game and will be at a major disadvantage in the next round. If Price could pitch like an ace, the Red Sox would be in good shape in the division round, but he isn't an ace anymore.
-
Now that the Yankees have graduated a few prospects, their minor league system is pretty thin. To get a guy like Degrom, they will have to build a deal around major league talent, probably Andujar. There is no one in their minor system that can bring back a pitcher like Degrom. C.Adams pretty much sucks; Florial (injured) has tools but has contact issues; that leaves Sheffield who doesn't profile as anything more than a middle of the rotation starter. http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2018?list=nyy Cashman isn't trading Torres but will he trade Andujar or will he try to squeeze another team in a trade? He offered C.Adams and C.Frazier for G.Cole, one of Cashman's biggest mistakes. If he gave the Pirates a fair offer for Cole, and included Andujar, Cole would be a Yankee right now.
-
I agree that Sale, Porcello, and Rodriguez will be in the playoff rotation. If S.Wright can get healthy, do we know for sure he can't beat out Price for a rotation spot? Will Wright not be healthy again this year? If the Red Sox play the Yankees in the playoffs, I don't see the Red Sox using Price as a starter. But if Wright isn't healthy, they are in a bad spot and will probably be forced to use him. That will be a predictable disaster. A question about the playoffs. If the Red Sox win the wild card and win the wild card game, do they go on to play the team with the best record in the next round? Or, does the best record play the worst record in the first round regardless of whether the worst team is the wild card winner or division winner?

Rafael Devers struggles/triumphs and the future
Fan_since_Boggs replied to jacksonianmarch's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
I know he never failed a test, but there were whispers surrounding Bagwell. Who knows. Certainly, the possibility of a player using steroids changes our perception of things. Most notably, Dan Duquette was probably right when he said Clemens was in the twilight of his career. Duquette was highly criticized for making that statement until we learned, later on, about Clemens' PED usage. Likewise, if Bagwell used the juice, maybe the Red Sox didn't trade away such a great player after all. We don't have the evidence that Bagwell used PEDs but he played in the steroids era, fit the profile, and may have used them. -
Should Jackie Bradley Jr be traded?
Fan_since_Boggs replied to StephenCurry30's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Bottom 3 in the lineup on Friday went 0 for 9 with 6 strikeouts. Bradley led the way with 3 strikeouts. Swihart is now hitting .158. Strange to think that Swihart's trade value is probably lower now than a few weeks back when he asked for a trade. -
2019 plans: Pomeranz= easy to replace. He sucks this year and the Red Sox don't miss him at all. Kimbrell will want too much money (Chapman money). Bye. Kelly will want less -- perhaps resign to be closer. Alternatively, trade J.Bradley for a closer. Rotation: Sale Price Porcello E-Rod Wright Still loaded with depth with Beeks and Shawaryn. Johnson too, but maybe the Red Sox trade Johnson. He belongs in the rotation, a better fit in the NL. Sign B.Harper, move Betts to CF, thus freeing up Bradley for a trade. With Harper added, the Red Sox will have another dominant year (same pitching staff minus Kimbrell). 2020 plans: He won't be as good as Bogaerts but if Chatman continues to develop, he can be a quality starting SS. The downgrade won't be devastating and Chatman will be a better player for the money, i.e., 20 million per year (Bogaerts) versus league minimum (Chatman). And the Red Sox will still be loaded offensively with Harper, Betts, Martinez, Devers, and Benintendi. Bogaerts plays out the final year of his contract in 2019; replaced by Chatman. Red Sox get compensation for Bogaerts. I don't know what the Red Sox should do with Sale at the end of 2019. I don't know if he has many ACE years left beyond next season. He will want a fortune. I probably wouldn't pay him, but I'm not sure where my ace is coming from. I have Price, E-Rod, Wright, Beeks, and Shawaryn as rotation pieces in 2020. That isn't bad, assuming Beeks and Shawaryn keep improving, but the staff lacks an ace. The Red Sox need to find an ace for 2020 and beyond. Finding a rotation ace for 2020 and beyond is the Red Sox's biggest challenge. Everything else can be accomplished pretty easily. These are ******** assumptions. As a Yankees fan, you are hoping they spend as much on Kimbrel as the Yankees spent on Chapman, but I doubt the Red Sox do that. I'm sure they have a plan. You don't know the plan, and you can't figure it out, but that doesn't mean they don't have a plan. The draft suggests that the Red Sox aren't framing the financial issues the way you like to frame them. Imagine that.
-
I wouldn't be surprised to see Chatman get a promotion soon to Double A. Chatman replaces Bogaerts in 2020. Kelly and then later Feltman replace Kimbrell beginning in 2019. That's approximately 40 million saved. I love it when a plan comes together.

Oh baby, the best pitching prospect in the game might get a start on Thursday: Can't wait!
-
In 3 of his last 4 seasons (including this year), Harper has an OPS+ of 147 or higher. Tough to be better than that. He is still only 25 years old--he could be signed to a 10 year contract without worrying about it.
-
It sounds like Beeks added a cutter:
-
E-Rod is still here. At the bottom (or perhaps middle) of the rotation, you have potential fits with guys like B.Johnson, J.Beeks, and M.Shawaryn. But where does the Red Sox next ace come from? Do they resign Sale who will want a fortune? I don't know. For me, that is the most challenging question when it comes to the 2021 team.

A Realistic View at 2018: Part II
Fan_since_Boggs replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
That's a great comp too, especially if Benintendi can be Mattingly without the back issues that may have derailed Mattingly's career. At one point in his career, Mattingly was on a HOF trajectory. -
I said it three starts ago: send Pomeranz to the bullpen, see if he can flourish as a one inning reliever (and regain some of his lost velocity). Wright should move into the rotation. By starting Pomeranz tonight, the Red Sox basically gave the game away.
