  1. Is it time to send Pomeranz to the bullpen for Wright or Velazquez? His velocity is down this year: I like the idea of moving him to the bullpen with the hope of turning him into a dominant one inning reliever. His fastball should play up in a one inning stint. Wright is useful as a relief pitcher, but he will never be a shutdown reliever, whereas Pomeranz could perhaps fill that role.
  2. I would also start Swihart over Leon.
  3. Nunez should not be in the lineup over Holt. Holt is hitting better and he is better defensively.
  4. C.Vazquez, WAR -1.0 Start Swihart at catcher for a few games and let's see how he does. We aren't benching Carlton Fish here; the guy we are putting on the bench for a few games has negative value anyway.
  5. I'm also in the camp of believing that Sandy Leon should go. I wouldn't hesitate to release/trade Leon and give the backup C job to Swihart. I would certainly do that before trading Swihart for nothing. True, maybe I'll change my mind if I watch Swihart behind the dish for an extended period of games, and maybe I'll reach the same conclusion the Red Sox have seemed to reach regarding Swihart's defensive skills, but I'm not there yet. Moreover, the Red Sox have a defensive catcher in Vazquez, they can afford a less efficient defensive catcher behind Vazquez with the hope that Swihart can develop as a hitter and add a little offense to the lineup. What's the worse that could happen? You release/trade a fringy Sandy Leon and give Swihart an opportunity at C. If it doesn't work out, you trade Swihart and find a no hit defensive catcher somewhere to backup Vazquez. Thus, if this scenario plays out, you've lost Sandy Leon and maybe can't get him back. If that happens, so what? The Red Sox aren't going to win the World Series this year because they dumped Sandy Leon?
  6. The Yankees should give back their 2009 championship banner. 2009 should no longer be recognized as a Yankees championship in the record book or by MLB. The 2009 Yankees team was loaded with PED guys, A-Roid, Cano, Melky, and A.Pettitte. There are probably more but that is all we know right now.
  7. Cano was also close to ARod. BTW, ARod is close to G.Sanchez. I sometimes wonder about him. I do think Cano may have been on a HOF trajectory, but that is over with. Good. I remember Yankees fans use to argue that Cano was better than Pedroia; that argument can't be supported anymore. Is this the biggest name busted for steroids since ARod and that Miami clinic? I guess Braun was a big name too. I can't think of anyone else. Dee Gordon isn't a big name. If I'm not mistaken, Manny Ramirez tested positive prior to the Miami clinic. Just when it looked like the Mariners would compete this year..... They will probably fall apart now.... If the Mariners do make the playoffs, I believe Cano wouldn't be eligible to play in the postseason, right?
  8. The lineup that I would employ for Saturday's game against Estrada: Betts RF Benintendi LF Hanley 1b Martinez DH Bogaerts SS Devers 3b Swihart 2b Leon C Bradley CF
  9. Another awesome inning from Smith. Since April 30: 5 IP, 0 ER, 9 Ks, 0 BB. The ERA is now below 4.00. I would play Holt over Nunez at 2b at this point. If Holt can hit, say, .280 and play better 2b defense, he deserves to start over Nunez who isn't hitting and is a shaky defender.
  10. It is a small sample size, but since April 30: Smith 4 IP, 0 ER, 7 Ks, 0 BB. If Smith can emerge as a shutdown 8th inning guy, you have your closer next year. I don't want the Red Sox to invest 80-90 million in Kimbrel, who will probably be expecting Chapman-like money.
  11. We need C.Smith to develop into a shutdown 8th inning guy, which could happen. If it does happen, I like this bullpen. I'm not big on Barnes--too many walks. He gets himself into trouble too easily especially against a patient lineup (like the Yankees). For me, trying to make Barnes into the 8th inning guy is an idea that is bound to fail. Instead, we need C.Smith to regain that 2015 form he had with the Mariners. Since April 30: Smith 4 IP, 0 ER, 7 Ks, 0 BB. Pretty good, keeping my fingers crossed he can keep this going.
  12. Yeah, we freak out a little bit when we lose to the Yankees but that is a good sign--we're passionate fans!
  13. Good points. The Red Sox should have won the second game. And if they get a big hit in game 1 at a key moment, they win that one too.
  14. The Red Sox don't have the minor league talent to acquire Realmuto IMO. I don't know why they don't give Swihart a start or two behind the dish. He might be weaker defensively than Vazquez and Leon, but why not take a look at him? Are you really going to wreck your season by playing an average or below average defensive catcher for one or two games? Cora treats Swihart like he is the plague. In the meantime, Vazquez is an automatic out who can't even hit the ball to the outfield and Leon has always been an incompetent hitter. In addition, watching Devers play 3b is like watching some little league kid play 3b. You can't insert Swihart at 3b every so often? I can't imagine Swihart being worse defensively at 3b than Devers.
  15. If you're not going to use Swihart to pinch hit for one of the catchers, what's the point of even carrying him on the roster? Vazquez came up with runners on second and third and one out (after the dreadful and predictable Devers strikeout) and Vazquez of course struck out too. What is Swihart doing here if he can't be used in a situation like that? And maybe Devers shouldn't have been up there against the lefty, I don't know, would need to check the splits.
  16. Based on what we are seeing from the Yankees -- all-stars at pretty much every position -- the Red Sox are going to be second rate citizens in the AL East. The Red Sox are limited in their ability to add value to the major league team through the minor leagues. Maybe the only way the Red Sox can reach another level is to sign Harper next season, move Mookie Betts to CF. How else do you add value to this team? You can't do it through the minor leagues. Dombrowski has surrendered significant talent in all of his asinine trades. Thus, you aren't going to add value through trades. That leaves free agency as the only avenue to significantly improve the team and Harper is going to be the best free agent.
  17. Sale let the Red Sox down too in last year's playoffs.
  18. Actually, the Red Sox would be better off if Price misses one or two complete seasons. I'm assuming they took out insurance on his contract and the insurance will likely cover 70-80% of the costs of the contract if Prices misses a full season. I would rather see Price miss a full season than spend a season going on and off the DL and pretty much sucking crap whenever he pitches. It is like the Mets with David Wright. Wright isn't going to retire until his contract is up and since he misses full seasons, the insurance company is paying out a high percentage of his contract, saving the Mets money.
  19. The minute he brought in Barnes I figured the game was over. The Yankees murder Barnes -- they have the book on him. They know he struggles with his command and so they wait him out and take walks or sit on pitches when Barnes falls behind. The Yankees did a little of both to Barnes last night. You can't bring in Barnes there. You keep Smith in for two more outs and then Kimbrel for a 4 out save.
  20. The Price contract might be just the start. If Kopech develops into a dominant ML starter and Moncada develops into a 30-30 guy, the Sale trade will look terrible in a few years. In essence, Dombrowski traded away future value in an attempt to win now. But if the Red Sox don't win now, even the Sale trade might look like utter buffoonery in the near future. Dombrowksi took a big gamble--he decimated the farm system in order to win now. It hasn't worked out for him so far.
  21. Based on how much they are playing him, it looks like his option will vest. But if he continues his downward slide, they should release him so that the option doesn't vest. It looks like Hanley's inflated BABIP (from April) is normalizing. He isn't hitting for sufficient power (only 3 HR). If his downward trajectory continues, you can't let that option vest, but the Red Sox have mismanaged this from the start. They probably should have dumped Hanley prior to the season and found a better alternative at 1b. I want the Red Sox to sign Machado for SS next year especially if Bogaerts is going to repeat his 2017 season. But I don't know if the Red Sox can sign Machado while paying out Hanley's option.
  22. We actually have a chance to win tomorrow--David Price isn't pitching.
  23. Vazquez with a solid dribbler to second base.
  24. The REdsox's 8th and 9th hitters are brutal.
  25. Who would you bring in to pinch hit for Vazquez? I guess Swihart?
