The Sox have three tough West coast games beginning tomorrow night. Oakland is no pushover. They are followed by three with the Angels who have stars but my not be as formidable as Oakland. This will be a tough trip but i hope for at least a split.
I believe the Sox have decided to let Duran play for the Olympics team. If that is true, he won't become available until the 2nd week of August at the earliest.
Playing in the American League East makes it difficult to rack up a lot of wins, but it also makes it difficult for teams behind us to gain ground. It should be interesting.
The deals look very good in terms of the team and also the quality of our minor league prospects. We shouldn't expect that projects from other teams would all be doing well. A significant number are a
and that is to Bloom's credit and remember we are doing it while staying below the CBT. What I do question is the tenacity and stubbornness of staying with players who are not getting the job done instead of trying alternatives. Even then, I admit to not being privy to the information available to management. I just hope they don't drag their feet and lose a number of games that we might have won by being more proactive.
Don't know where to put draft related comments but I see the Sox have $11,359,600 to spend in bonus money.
By rounds (1st 5) these is what the slot expectations are:
1st round $6,664,000
2nd. round $1,856,700
3rd round $831,100
4th round $554,300
5th round $410,100
The Sox may take Leiter but the top catcher also fits the Sox needs
The Sox are playing sloppy baseball with defense, base running and some poor pitching. The Yankees suffer from some of the same maladies. The Rays play a cleaner brand of ball and have used that to good effect. We can do something about our weak hitters but the defensive lapses, baserunning errors and poor pitching will be more difficult to fix. Cora expects more so maybe he can have an impact on those areas.
I have been recommending replacing our weakest field players and pitchers with promising prospects for some time now. Duran for Santana has looked like a no brainer. Dalbec still has potential so I have advocated a left handed hitter to platoon with him although Marwin is not an upgrade. they were saying Dalbec was choking up and that got him out of the slump. I thought instead that he stopped taking pitches down the middle and got more aggressive. Whatever, he is back in a slump. I would move Andriese as soon as Houck or Ort is available. Maybe our promising prospects don't give us a lift but possibly they help us win another game or two a month and that is worth a try.
Just joining after watching the first two. The Sox are ahead but the have also made several blunders that could have been or were costly. When Chavis stole 3rd Verdugo didn't get the message. That didn't hurt. Perez got up 0 and 2 on Stanton and proceeded to throw 4 balls. Then Bogaerts made an error on an easy ground ball and Perez got unlucky on 2 close pitches. We need tto play cleaner baseball.
He is certainly one option for the leadoff spot. From an article today, the Sox leadoff is deplorable
The Red Sox actually have been among baseball’s worst teams when it comes to getting production from the No. 1 spot in the batting order.
Hits 26th
Batting average 28th
On-base percentage 30th
Slugging percentage 28th
wOBA 30th
OPS+ 30th
I doubt that Duran could do worse, but the Sox could still trade to fill the position, but then what would they do with Duran?
Yesterdays Worcester results:
Jarren Duran, CF: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS
Marcus Wilson, RF: 3-4, 1 BB
Franchy Cordero, LF: 1-5, 3 K
We need a left handed bat and Duran is looking good. Wilson is also but a right handed hitter.
I have a great deal of respect for both Bloom and Cora. I probably don't know or understand the issues faced by them in making moves to improve the team, but it does seem clear that moves should be made and soon. Santana is not getting it done, nor is Andreise. Others are struggling, but not everything can be fixed at once. Is it the CBT getting in the way of making moves or some other issue as yet undefined? I am for making moves to improve the team now.
The weak areas are obvious and there are options which could be tried. Why not try at least some of the options? Cora has done good things that's why it is hard to understand the lack of action now.
Yes, and I recall someone said the same thing about Duran's striking out three times. Cordero has had a problem with striking out at the ML level as well. It does give one pause about both of them. I do think Cordero gets called up before Duran primarily because Duran will be given a chance to play in the Olympics. I think Duran with his speed is likely to be given a chance to lead off when he gets called up, probably in August.
