  1. The home plate umpire last night had a particularly wide strike zone after a very narrow one the night before. I can understand strikes on balls which nearly touch the strike zone being called strikes but those a couple of inches off have to frustrate hitters. It's particularly tough when a hitter gets rung up on a clear ball in a critical situation. I am still a proponent of technology assisted calling of balls and strikes. I also thought the game should have been delayed last night after the 5th inning as conditions were getting dangerous. I know its an umpire's call, but they appear to have gotten this one wrong.
  2. JD Martinez seemed to be off his game. I thought the same last night and then he hit a HR. It seemed to be more than just the pitching as some other right handers at least made contact. Take the good pitches and then weak check swings called strikes against balls off the plate. Maybe the AS break has thrown him off.
  3. This stopped being baseball after the 5th inning. After that it became a freak show.
  4. What will they say if the Yankees lose with their Ace on the mound?
  5. Houck answered some questions tonight. He showed a good fastball with life and a good slider. It looks like Cora does intend to use him in long relief and possibly in spot starts. The good news tonight, Houck and E-Rod pitched to all except one batter. The BP should be fresh as we continue on a stretch of very tough games. Takes some pressure off looking for pitching in the trade market. Other good news was Arroyo's continued very good AB's. This kid could prove to be a steal for us. Also Rafi put together outstanding AB's. I did notice both Renfroe and Dalbec have trouble recognizing the curve ball.
  6. Dalbec has enormous power, which is something to develop. The question is can he at least hit left handers well enough to justify keeping him. My early watching of his plate approach was that he was taking a lot of hittable pitches and then chasing when down on the count. Was he coached to take these pitches or was his recognition that bad so he didn't see them as strikes? I don't know but he has to modify his approach to have any chance of sticking long term. Casas is a ways from making it to the big leagues but already seems to recognize pitches better than Dalbec. If Casas comes up, I doubt if we see him until as a cameo in Sept. next season. Until then we have no regular first baseman unless we trade for one.
  7. Has anyone yet seen what transactions have occurred to the 40 man to allow Duran to come up ad Houck to be added to the active roster?
  8. Duran is the fastest player now on the active roster. All kidding aside, it is probably best to use him in a position where speed matters.
  9. Thanks for your kind words. As you probably know from my posts I am over 80 now but still play ball fairly well (softball) year round. I could never hit at even the minor league level but like to think all these years of watching have given me an appreciation of this ever changing game. The complexities interest me and I must say I still love the game just as my father (born in 1896) did going back so many years. We probably never will sit together at a game bu many of the posts.t can share opinions here and that is enjoyable to me. I value your thoughtful analysis, even if I do rag on you once in a while. I also respect many other posters here for their knowledge and interest. This site is a good one because of the quality of many of the posts.
  10. Your correct that Duran is an experiment at this point. Can he add some spark to the team with hitting and speed on the base paths? He will be the fastest player on the team, that we know. It has to be stay tuned for now.
  11. Pretty reasonable assessment of how Cora will handle position play unless the Sox pickup a lefthanded first baseman to platoon with Dalbec.
  12. Here we are at the 2nd half of the season and I have a comment/thought. There has been a great deal or work by Moon and others to provide stats to support lineups, trade values and targets for acquisitions. The stats are essential in those discussions but I am from the old school. I like to watch the game closely for how individual players approach hitting, fielding and base running. I also like to see how pitchers attempt to get batters out. I'm interested in managers strategies and player adjustment but seldom are those things discussed? I know there is the game day thread which but I don't find a lot in that either. I know there are many knowledgeable fans on the site so am surprised that the details of the game are so rarely discussed.
  13. Schreiber is a pitcher doing well at Worcester. Schreiber in over 32 innings this season has a 2.25 ERA with 31 strikeouts and 12 walks. His highest ERA in any minor-league season is 2.76. He is not currently on the 40 man but may be an option going forward.
  14. Boston took 7 in the draft but the number they actually sign may be lower.
  15. I wonder if players who test positive even though vaccinated have to go into quarantine when they test positive?
  16. Is Wilson one of the trade chips?
  17. I still believe the Sox are trying to stay under the CBT ceiling this year as we don't appear to have starting pitching good enough to be WS contenders/winners. We are backed up with approximately $800K leeway so it appears Bloom will need to clear some salary through trades to do even the minimum. By that I mean a reliable left handed first baseman to platoon with Dalbec and a solid relief pitcher, assuming we get Sale back an Houck can be a spot starter/long reliever. The hope is that we continue to be lucky on the injury front.
  18. It makes sense for Duran to debut at Yankee Stadium with 's shortened left field, provided Yankees put up a right handed pitcher. I haven't seen the Yankee's choice for tonight's game. It's got to be good for Duran to be among such guys as Bogaerts and JDM who can help him with the approach to hitting ML pitching. Now it's time for Bloom to find platoon help for Dalbec and to look to strengthen our pitching through trade.
  19. Will you stop the negativity? Enough of the constant bashing of the idea of calling up a top prospect when others used in the first half were marginal. Let's now see what he can do to help this team.
  20. I opined that Duran would be called up right after the AS Break based on the Sox removing his availability to play on the Olympic team. He will start in CF tomorrow night in Yankee Stadium. The other, less likely scenario was they made the move to trade him. I got a lot of flack for my opinion but it turned out to be right on. Now I hope those seeming opposed to have him come up, and by doing so improve the team, will give him the same break that was advocated for Santana. Is this young man a sure thing? Of course not but he does give us a speedy player with some pop in his left handed bat. I will stay optimistic and look for him to be a help. I believe Bloom and Cora have seen enough to believe he is better than some alternatives.
  21. Did you notice Wilson was taken out of the Worcester lineup. don't know if he was involved in any trade discussions. Something will be happening soon.
  22. I doubt if we would match 3/$45 if that is the offer. He is a valuable player, but Bloom may choose to go for an alternative DH for less money and years and use the savings for pitching staff improvement.
  23. Since Kike has come alive, the #1 spot in the order has gotten into much better shape.
  24. and help, but nothing is sure I'm more optimistic about Rios as he has a very good arm with his biggest drawback being command. The other 4 you mention should all be expendable. Let's hope Sale will come back but nothing is sure about his impact. Houck is coming back from injury and is a also question mark. as well. Our problems looked more like the centered on starting pitching so Bloom has a major challenge. I like his approach and expect him to continue to make smart decisions.
  25. Our weakest area of late has been starting pitching. It's possible Sale could help us there but it difficult to see us adding a SP who could give us meaningful help without exceeding the CBT. Would an addition be worth losing young prospect and/or exceeding the CBT ceiling. We will know the Sox direction in about two weeks.
