  1. Today, we sit at $238M, we have around $8M+ to plug the holes. My guess is $238M may drop as a player or two maybe cut. Our starting rotation is one of the best as we start the season. Our lineup is deeper than last year's. We still have the best manager in AL East. No target on our backs thanks to Yankees being crowned pre-season favorite. Perfect. Let the season begin.
  2. Per MLB.COM projection RED SOX Lineup: 1. Andrew Benintendi, LF 2. Mookie Betts, RF 3. J.D. Martinez, DH 4. Xander Bogaerts, SS 5. Mitch Moreland, 1B 6. Dustin Pedroia, 2B 7. Rafael Devers, 3B 8. Jackie Bradley Jr., CF 9. Christian Vazquez, C Rotation and closer: 1. Chris Sale, LHP 2. David Price, LHP 3. Rick Porcello, RHP 4. Nathan Eovaldi, RHP 5. Eduardo Rodriguez, LHP Closer: Matt Barnes, RHP Our offense has chance to be better...little deeper/longer. (Note; since I can't predict who is going to get hurt, our discussion here is understood "assuming healthy")
  3. There's the season's grind and then there's the playoffs. Sale, Price, Porcello and Eovaldi has pitched at some high altitude. I said last year was E Rod's year to have a break out year, similar to what Lester did at comparable mlb experience. That didn't happen but I think this maybe the year E Rod finally breaks out only because he was healthy this past winter. In October, one starter will move to the pen and maybe two more will both start and close or pitch during crunch times. I like this team once we get to the playoffs. Remember, Betts and JD were relatively quiet in the World Series. Hitting is always unpredictable but elite pitching usually comes through.
  4. Don't we have doctors that can give thorough physicals?
  5. I'm all about raising the ceiling....I'd like to see us extend Sale.
  6. Your analysis is spot on.
  7. You'd have to pick and choose. If we sign Sale, Xander and 'extend' JD this winter, I won't sign Porcello ($20M), Pearce ($6.275M), Mitch ($6.5M), Holt ($3.575M) and Nunez ($5M). That's $41M plus Pablo's $18.455M. Say $60M. Throw in JBJ and now it's $68M Sale = delta of $18M, Xander = delta of $11M, JD = delta $5M (max), Betts = delta $8M E Rod = delta $3M, Beni = dlta $4M That adds up to $49M. We'd have $20M to pay for other arb raises and cheap signings. SP Sale, Price, E Rod, Eovaldi, No Name BP band of overachievers CF Beni RF Betts DH JD SS Xander 3B Devers 2B Dustin LF ??????? C Vazquez 1B Chavis/Pearce (sign him for another $6M) It's doable. Or we keep JBJ for another year and get a defensive SS. Let some young kids fail as back up options. Idea to is to get to the playoffs and have a stellar starting pitching.....we can win it with Price, Sale, E Rod and Eovaldi in 2020.
  8. Yep....they are not just going to let all the talent leave just to reset. Sox did the hard part assembling talent. Sure we'd like our farm to step up and produce some more major leaguers. How stupid is to rebuild at a time we still have talent?
  9. It makes no sense to reset unless you have a bad team. Sox is nowhere close to being that. Porcello is goner unless Sale gets away. There's still chance that JD will stick it out for one more year. He's set to make $23.75M in 2020, then drops to $19.375 in 2021. He can opt out for next two years. If I'm JD, I'd wait for 2021 season when Ellsbury's contract is up. I bet Yankees would love to have him with short right field fence. If Sox can remain competitive with a payroll of $228M or less, they won't reset.
  10. I just don't think team will FORCE a reset. Key is staying below $20M above the limit. $228M CBP will cost $238M. I think Henry can live with that.
  11. We can all chip in $100.
  12. 2020 I think Porcello definitely goes if we extend Sale. I'll assume JD opts out after 2020. Rick $20.625M Pablo $18.455M Pearce $ 6.250M Mitch $ 6.500M Chris $15.000M Xander $12.000M Total Savings = $ 98.830M Sale $33.000M Betts $ 8.000M ($28M total, arb 3) Xander $20.000M Bradley $ 4.000M ($12M+ total) E Rod $ 4.000M ($8.3M total, arb 2) Beni $4.000M (arb 1) Major Additions = $73.000M Net Positive $26M Current CBT Payroll (2019)= $238M 2020 CBT Payroll = $218M before other arbitration raises and rest of 40 man roster costs. We are short one starter and no 1B. We can probably sign a fifth starter and 1B for $16M combined if no one emerges from the farm. Note: Betts is already at $28M (projected for 2019). Really, what's the delta if we decide to pay him $35M? Doable. If he says no, go after Trout.
  13. My guess is that DD STRONGLY recommended it to the ownership. Sale's trade is DD's deal. He's very vested in Sale's career with the Sox. By signing Chris year ahead of possible Betts' and Bradley's departures, who knows, we maybe going for three peat.
  14. If I'm head of the Players' Union, Machado to San Diego is great for the players. You want as many mega deals as possible going to teams not named LA, Yankees, Cubs, Red Sox, etc. Not Red Sox this year but other high end market teams still have bullets to fire. Read that as money to spend on players not named Machado and Harper. I think it's good for baseball. Whoever loses Harper sweepstake may turn to someone like Kimbrel. It'd be like my wife saying honey I saved you $300M so I'm going to buy Kimbrel for $85M.
  15. You maybe right. But why not wait and see? DD obviously disagrees with you. Sox management seems almost giddy about the plethora of bullpen arms.
  16. Cubs won a title. We won a title. I'm happy with our starting pitching. Everyone's happy.
  17. I'm assuming you knew I was talking about Sandy..but original OP may have been about Swihart.
  18. With his experience (3 years +), he can declare for free agency but I'm not sure how the money would work. My guess is his contract is not guranteed. In theory, arbitration figures are typically below market value so Leon should get a contract larger than what he agreed to if he declares for free agency. What I'm saying is that why would Sox as an example let go of Betts to save $20M and get NOTHING in return? Same would apply to Sandy. I would also think Swihart would have some value in a trade.
  19. very sad to hear...not being flippant but I'm glad Sox won last year.....
  20. so you think he'll rehab until October of 2021?
  21. It's a big deal at my age..nice deflection by the way.
  22. Nope J.D. Martinez rf-dh 5 years/$110M (2018-22) 5 years/$110M (2018-22) signed by Boston as a free agent 2/26/18 18:$23.75M, 19:$23.75M, 20:$23.75M, 21:$19.375M, 22:$19.375M may opt out of contract after both 2019 ($2.5M buyout) and 2020 seasons (no buyout)
  23. I always want to hear the bad news as soon as possible. Can't baby the guy. If he can't play, he should retire.
  24. Early bird gets the worm.
  25. After we win the Division, I will happily proclaim that Despite finishing second (AGAIN), Yankees have the Best Bullpen Ever Assembled!
