Why don't you think outside of the box for change? I'm comparing season opening rotation 2021 vs 2022. Was Sale in the rotation? NO. You don't ever consider monetary aspect of roster building. You probably want to sign Devers to long extension, no? Something has to give Old Red. OMG, ERA as Moon has said is meaningless stats. How do you know he didn't miss many bats? Aren't you on RECORD saying you don't give a damn about analytics? Did you watch him pitch? Have you seen his miss bats numbers? Houck and Whitlock are not replacing anybody? You do know that Houck started in 2021? Whitlock used to be a starter until his arm surgery? Sox babied him last year right? Why not try to win without going over the luxury tax limit? We have about $23M to buy some quality relievers if the tax stays at $210M. You are in that group of posters always complaining about lack young starters produced by the Sox. Then you get a Whitlock and a Houck and you jettisoned them to the pen. OMG, Why can't we have young guys in our rotation?

Cot's has Sox now at $187,450 including projected arbitration raises for 9 players. (Yanks at $220M, they're already over) JD $22M and Price $16M come off the books after this season. Eovaldi, Vaz and Kike all will be free agents along with newly signed Wacha. We could decided to go spend one year early, giving Sox at minimum $38M plus whatever we're under the luxury tax, if any, with new CBA.

I think it's a great signing. He misses bats. He ended the season on a good note. He abandoned his cutter for his curveball. He's willing to make changes. He's going to work on his cutter this off season. Change up is his bread and butter. Full season of Sale will replace E Rod. I would bet on Sale to have better year than E Rod. Eovaldi and Pivetta returns. Wacha replaces Perez, and he'll be better, book it. Whitlock will be better than Richards, so will Houck. Our starting pitching is better and we saved $25M in the process. I love Bloom.

I think the concentration of resources should be on starting pitching. Kimmi I agree, and to some extent, starters are more known commodities. We lost Ottavino, so I think keeping Houck & Whitlock in the pen makes a lot of sense. Moon You are the biggest fence straddler when it comes to this. I'd say give both chance to start. Houck & Whitlock may give us terrific starting pitching for two years at $1M. Go find pen help. Again, aren't you the biggest critiquer when it comes Sox not developing starting pitching? Yet you want to turn every one of them into a reliever. I don't get it.

Exactly, owners may not have lost as much as they want us to believe. Many expenses went away during 2020.

CBA fight will be interesting. There's no doubt the owners took advantage of players' union the last go around. Increase in revenue outpaced the salaries but the deal did not reflect it. Owners will bring up the COVID and the lost season in 2020. They shut down the minor league payroll. They limited team travel and were responsible only for 60 game season worth of salaries. Just not sure how much money they lost.

The article also mentioned the uncertainty of labor negotiation as an impetus leading to the signing. E Rod may look like a genius if there's sever restriction(s) imposed on major league teams going forward (lesser threshold for luxury tax, additional non financial penalties for signing FA, etc)

Again I just don't get you. Have a back up plan yes but why not give both the chance to start. You have $1M options for two starting spots. But you want to spend $15-30M for mediocre starting pitchers that no one wants. That is so typical Red Sox fan mindset. Unf***ing believable.

The left side of the infield needs to be better. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts and third baseman Rafael Devers combined for negative-18 Defensive Runs Saved. Bogaerts (-5) finished 16th out of 21 qualified major league shortstop. Devers (-13) ranked last among 10 qualified third basemen. Do we really want to give Xander a raise and the richest contract in Sox history to Devers? Just asking.

"We can't develop starting pitchers" We get lucky in Rule 5 draft. We get a kid with starting potential. We delay it for a year because he's coming off TJ. He has chance to start for year 2 payroll amount. $1M max. He will allow us NOT to sign a Richards type deal, thus saving us $10M. Get a reliever out of our improving farm system to replace him. Why do we give a pitcher $18M one year deal (that's what we're doing), which equates to $10M more than his current pay AFTER the year he had? IF HE REFUSES WE GET A COMPENSATION PICK. Is that your logic? You're willing to gamble $10M for the sake of compensation pick? If E Rod is worth $18M and apparently both you and Moon do, then go for it. I don't think he's worth that much. Hell I'd take chance on Syndergaard before signing E Rod for $18M. Acquisition of E Rod was one of the best deals we ever made. We gave up a rental in Miller and then had chance to sign him back but we didn't. I like E Rod. Just don't think he's worth $18M. I can have an opinion, no?

And we don't make it as a wild card entry without him. Lifetime contract at $14M is not a terrible thing. He can hit. So you think Bloom was an idiot for acquiring him? Glad he's in charge.

Red Sox Decline Options On Martin Perez, Garrett Richards The Red Sox have declined their $6MM club option on left-hander Martin Perez, per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. He will instead receive a $500K buyout and head into free agency. Right-hander Garrett Richards will also have his $10MM option declined, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive. He gets a $1.5MM buyout on his way into the free agent pool.

Martinez has declined to exercise the opt-out provision in his contract and will therefore remain with the Red Sox for 2022, as reported by Jon Heyman of MLB Network. His original five-year deal with the club prior to the 2018 season contained three opt-outs: after the second, third and fourth years of the deal. No imagination....we'd get back close to the tax limit after 2022. You also think Houck and Whitlock should be destined to bullpen while giving a $8M a pitcher a $10M raise because team wins when he starts. Everyone knows team wins and losses are not good barometer of pitcher's effectiveness. He's just a good luck charm. If I recall, Porcello won with tons of run support when he pitched. Let's bring him back. Payroll for 2018 and 2019 are facts. Do you have inside information on how much Bloom can spend? I'd say history is good indicator of future. What the hell would you do with $100M? Obviously you're willing to pay a mediocre starting pitcher $18M after that stellar season when for less than $1M, Whitlock can pretty much pitch to similar stats.

Sox did spend $239M (2018) and $243M (2019). Cot's has Sox at $35M under the current $210M cap (Vaz option not picked up). At $240M, we potential have $65M less $7.5M for Vaz or say $57M. If JD opts out, that will be close to $80M available. Trade Xander, sign Semien, Schwarber, Correa and a starting pitcher. Price, Eovaldi, Kike, Vaz money all come off after 2022 for combined total of $48M. Be bold, think big.

Are the Sox fans that high maintenance wife? We think nothing of it to give a $10M raise to a pitcher at best had an average season at the same time complaining about our payroll being high. Isn't there a better use of that $18M? Just asking.
