  1. One thing not shown is Papi's plate appearances total, which is about 1400 more than Edgar. That's mainly due to him starting 3 years earlier. All three of these years, while not bad, were definitely below Papi's career averages.
  2. What do people think about Ortiz number being retired? I for one don't understand the rush or need to make another exception to their rules. I understood Johnny Pesky considering how much time he spent with the sox. I wasn't as big a fan of retiring Pedro's number, but at least they waited until he got in the HOF. Papi qualifies in all other ways and he will get in the hall. Ted Williams waited, Carl Yastremski waited, why not wait the 5 years for Papi as well?
  3. How is this effectively a 3 year deal? Are you counting on Price opting out if he doesn't think he's worth the money?
  4. It's over. The redsox have never come back from this kind of deficit.
  5. Not much to say about tomorrow. They have to win, Buch has to pitch well. They have to hit. The real question comes after that. Would you rather see Porcello or Price in a game 5 (that's right, I'm talking about game 5 now)
  6. I think Buch will come up big too, but I don't think they should pitch Porcello on Monday. I have way more confidence in ERod then I do in Price so it makes more sense to not send Porcello out on short rest. I know his numbers are better at home, but not by much.
  7. Suppose the redsox are down 2-1 going into game 4, do you bring back Porcello on 3 days rest since he only threw 72 pitches yesterday?
  8. I'm expecting JBJ to be the star, offensively and defensively.
  9. Sounds like Hernandez and Vasquez are in.
  10. I guess I'm missing the 'third year' point. Matt Moore is under contract for $26M over the next three years, Pomeranz is arbitration eligible for the next two. Don't you think if the sox offered Pomeranz Moore's contract he'd jump all over it?
  11. 3 run homers are big, although in those games a single was all that was needed (or a sac fly in the blue jays case)
  12. I don't think PEDs were going to keep Ortiz out anyway, but if they were, Manfred's speech should help. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/17706532/david-ortiz-says-did-wrong-03-failed-drug-test
  13. Pablo only made 6 outs this year, so I guess he should beat both of them.
  14. That's apples to oranges. Felix was far and away the best pitcher that year. This year an argument could be made for any of the three being discussed here ignoring wins. Wins definitely tips the scale for Porcello. It's also likely these three split enough votes that Britton ends up winning it.
  15. So do you think it should be Aaron Sanchez (ERA leader) or Justin Verlander (k leader)?
  16. I honestly haven't watched his outings that closely so I'll take your word on that. I just know I almost threw my beer bottle at the tv about 5 times in the 9th inning and assumed he isn't usually that far off.
  17. He still had the lead when he left the game. Trust me, I know it doesn't make what he did any better. However, even though he's had some wild appearances, this one was atypical. He wasn't even close on 90% of his pitches.
  18. ML avg ops at third is 0.780, the redsox are the only team below .700 (although they are at 0.699)
  19. I don't necessarily disagree, but I'm surprised this post came the day after the game he had last night. I'm not talking about 0-4, that happens, but 8 total pitches seen in the game. He came up multiple times when the pitcher was wild and the sox had a scoring opportunity and swung at the first pitch.
  20. Normally I don't think they deserve to be in the Cy Young conversation, but the exception is a 0 blown save season. Look at the difference it would have made to a lot of teams. Detroit and Seattle would both be firmly leading the wildcard, the white sox would still be in the hunt, SF would be leading the dodgers.
  21. I agree with you. Technically it wasn't even a blown save by Kimbrell last night, but that is splitting hairs of course. I chalk this one up more to the rain then pressure. He's only had one other game this year when he walked that many batters (also against NYY).
  22. Not to mention, for a guy who pitched most of his career in Tampa, a home opener at Fenway would feel like postseason atmosphere.
  23. I don't have any doubt that Porcello beats out Kluber in the Cy Young race, but I still see a strong case for Britton. His case is improved when you look at what's happened to other closers lately. The closers for essentially all of the other wild card contenders in the AL have had blown saves in the last week.
  24. FiP, BaBip in stats like these may be useful to get an understanding of how well a player is actually pitching or hitting, but Cy Young and MVP should be about actual performance, what they have done to help win games.
