  1. That same year Jake Fraley posted his best numbers (OPS .925) at the Double A Texas League in 259 plate appearances with the Arkansas Travelers, who play in the pitcher-friendly Dickey-Stephens Park: https://www.milb.com/news/gcs-66868822
  2. And Jarren Duran and Jake Fraley are/were both graded an overall future value of 40: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/jarren-duran/sa3006786/stats?position=OF https://www.fangraphs.com/players/jake-fraley/19260/stats?position=OF
  3. Jarren Duran's ceiling might be Jake Fraley, who in his age 24 season made 10 starts, including nine in center field, for a 94-loss Seattle club in 2019. Or not. Compare their minor league stats: JD DOB 9-5-96, B:L, T:R, 199 G, .322/.376/.446/.823, 70 SB, 23 CS JF DOB 5-25-95, B:L, T:L, 250 G, .286/.362/.480/.842, 70 SB, 28 CS https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=duran-000jar https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=fraley000jak
  4. Cheaters should be held accountable. Alex Cora was held accountable. Welcome back.
  5. Earlier this year FanGraphs failed to rank Deivy Grullon among the Top 39 prospects in a weak Philadelphia farm system: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/top-39-prospects-philadelphia-phillies/ Grullon and Seattle's Luis Torrens were among potential backup catchers dealt at this year's trade deadline. Here is one comp with ZiPS projections: DG DOB 2-27-96, 6-1, 180, B:R, T:R, international free agent signed on July 2, 2012, ZiPS 2021 0.3 WAR, 2022 0.6 WAR LT DOB 5-2-96, 6-0, 175, B:R, T:R, international free agent signed on July 2, 2012, ZiPS 2021 0.8 WAR, 2022 0.7 WAR Grullon made one start after the trade while Torrens made 16 starts for Seattle. Offseason moves could change depth charts but at this point Torrens would back up Tom Murphy, Seattle's expected starting catcher. Grullon has six years of team control while Torrens has five years of team control.
  6. Jonathan Schoop and Kolten Wong may shun the Red Sox. Or not.
  7. One of those prospects, righthander Andrew Moore, was actually a post-prospect who had hurled five quality starts the previous season. Indeed Moore did not play in 2020.
  8. Trivia: When Jarren Duran was playing for Cypress (CA) High School, down the street Dylan Moore was playing for Cypress College. This year Moore posted 1.7 bWAR and 1.4 fWAR in only 38 games playing seven positions with the Seattle Mariners.
  9. The Mets have signed Mallex Smith (and Jose Peraza and Arodys Vizcaino) to minor league contracts: The Red Sox might not want to rely on Jarren Duran, a 24-year-old who has played only 82 games above High A, posting a .250/.309/.325/.634 line with a wRC+ of only 87 at Double A: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/jarren-duran/sa3006786/stats?position=OF FanGraphs gives Duran a modest future value of 40 on an 80-point scale. SoxProspects questions Duran's defense: https://soxprospects.com/players/duran-jarren.htm On the other hand, a non-contending team might have little to lose by giving Duran a shot in centerfield.
  10. According to the early ESPN power rankings for 2021, that could be the Red Sox: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/30151839/mlb-power-rankings-way-too-early-edition-how-dodgers-rays-all-30-teams-stack-2021 Or not.
  11. Have you taken Python or a similar coding class? My younger daughter, who like you is a college senior, took a Python course as a prerequisite for the required data class in her social science major. Analytics have taken over the world. Former FanGraphs managing editor Dave Cameron, who works now for the San Diego Padres, wrote that anyone who wants to enter baseball operations should take a coding class.
  12. A few million voters in Tuesday's election were born after the Seattle Mariners last appeared in the postseason. Enjoy.
  13. The Red Sox are advertising a job opening for some TalkSox posters: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/instagraphs/job-posting-boston-red-sox-analyst-2/
  14. Despite his dismal on-field performance, Dee Strange-Gordon earned respect in Seattle: https://www.lookoutlanding.com/2020/10/29/21539016/farewell-dee-gordon-strange-a-great-seattle-mariner-despite-what-the-numbers-say
  15. The free agent market may be flooded with non-tenders on December 2. More options should be available.
  16. Perhaps Charlie Morton, who turns 37 this month, would prefer a top 2021 contender. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/30151839/mlb-power-rankings-way-too-early-edition-how-dodgers-rays-all-30-teams-stack-2021 Or not.
  17. MLB Trade Rumors predicts the Red Sox will land second baseman Kolten Wong, lefthander Jose Quintana and righthander Anthony DeSclafani: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/11/mlb-free-agent-predictions-2021.html
  18. ZiPS projects 2021 WAR of 3.0 for Charlie Morton, 1.6 for Martin Perez, 1.5 for Rick Porcello and 1.5 for Jon Lester. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/charlie-morton/4676/stats?position=P#zips-3-year-projections
  19. The other options may be even less appealing. Who could reasonably be in the 2021 Red Sox starting rotation?
  20. Martin Perez responds on Twitter:
  21. The Red Sox are likely to be among the suitors for Martin Perez in free agency. The Sox just didn't like the option price.
  22. The Red Sox decline the Martin Perez option:
  23. This poster is partial to Stanford grads such as Sam Fuld. From Wikipedia: "During the baseball off-season, Fuld returns to Stanford to pursue a master's degree in statistics.[14]":) Alex Cora will be a fine pick.
  24. With only an hour and a half to go until the deadline for extending qualifying offers, the only publicly announced QO has gone to Mets righthander Marcus Stroman. What if that is the only qualifying offer? What would that say about the free agent market?
  25. The Red Sox' 40-man roster up to 37 after today's moves: https://twitter.com/bradfo/status/1322568128132513793/photo/1 https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Elq0sgAXYAESQd1?format=png&name=large
