  1. Since sweeping the Seattle Mariners in a four-game series at Fenway Park the Red Sox have gone 5-5, all against teams with losing records, while the Mariners have gone 6-4, including three games against the 34-18 Houston Astros.
  2. Always brace for statistical aberrations.
  3. With a Red Sox win Friday the AL East will have a commanding 45-25 record this year in head-to-head competition against the AL West.
  4. My daughters live in cool neighborhoods of Oakland and San Francisco, respectively.
  5. To be fair: Garrett Whitlock has made 53 professional starts and in December 2020 was left exposed in the Rule 5 draft. Most teams would be thrilled to land an "average starter" in the Rule 5 draft.
  6. Should that record be 23-27?
  7. Should be fun. The Mariners have posted five straight quality starts in the most recent turn through the rotation. When was the last time an MLB club posted five straight quality starts?
  8. In a three-game weekend series the Seattle Mariners outscored the first-place Houston Astros 13-3, with each M's starter going at least seven innings, but still managed to lose one game.
  9. A prominent poster called the Matt Barnes extension "highway robbery" by the Red Sox. This poster called the extension "fair market value." Perhaps we were both wrong. Or not.
  10. Should Matt Barnes be dropped in a 10-team mixed fantasy league? Asking for a friend.
  11. In fantasy baseball over the past few days I've picked up two of moonslav's formerly favored relievers: Matt Barnes with his 6.75 ERA and Lou Trivino with his 7.71 ERA. Our earlier back-and-forth discussions of their values was appreciated.
  12. FWIW last night the Seattle Mariners were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position in a 6-1 victory over Justin Verlander and the first-place Houston Astros.
  13. It's time to pick up Matt Barnes in fantasy baseball. Or not. For a team on the upswing, Barnes has a 2.84 ERA over his last seven appearances despite a .333 BABIP.
  14. Thanks for the kind thought ... I had a great week outside of baseball.
  15. The Mariners are cursed. Impressive sweep for the Red Sox.
  16. This Seattle fan picked a good time to vacation, taking a break from Mariner telecasts. Two in-person college games provided a welcome respite.
  17. The Red Sox record can move ahead of Seattle's record by winning two of the next three games. Or by winning Friday evening.
  18. The Red Sox needed an extra inning to take last year's seven-game season series: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SEA/SEA202109150.shtml This in-attendance fan was heartbroken when a Jarred Kelenic drive landed just foul with a runner on second base in the bottom of the ninth inning.
  19. The Red Sox have a team ERA+ of 106 while the Mariners have a team ERA+ of 96: https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL/2022.shtml
  20. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS202104240.shtml In an Over the Monster podcast today, Chris Flexen is referred to as a "below-average" pitcher: https://www.overthemonster.com/2022/5/19/23126274/boston-red-sox-podcast-houston-astros-nick-pivetta-complete-game-seattle-mariners-preview ... which perhaps Flexen has been this season after posting a 3.61 ERA in 179.2 innings last year as a back-of-rotation starter: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/chris-flexen/13896/stats?position=P
  21. FWIW Eugenio Suarez has a wRC+ of 126 and is on pace for 4+ fWAR. The Seattle Mariners are sixth in the league with a team wRC+ of 110 while the Red Sox are 11th in the league with a team wRC+ of 89: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=al&qual=0&type=8&season=2022&month=0&season1=2022&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2022-01-01&enddate=2022-12-31&sort=17,d
  22. Last year the Seattle Mariners split a four-game series at Fenway Park, outscoring the Red Sox 23-16, with a rotation of Justin Dunn, Yusei Kikuchi, Chris Flexen and Nick Margevicius. This year the Mariners send George Kirby, Robbie Ray, Flexen and Logan Gilbert to the mound. Should be an interesting series.
  23. No. Two off Catfish Hunter, two off one reliever and one off another reliever: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIN/MIN196606090.shtml
  24. The Twins of the 1960s once hit five homers in an inning. Before today five other teams reportedly have hit five home runs in an inning. https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-most-home-runs-hit-in-one-inning-in-MLB-baseball-history
  25. Despite heightened expectations, the postseason odds for the floundering Seattle Mariners are down to 16 percent as the M's embark on a tough 10-game road trip against two good teams and the Boston Red Sox.
