  1. The Seattle Sounders have advanced to the Major League Soccer Cup the last two seasons, winning in 2017, the year after the Portland Timbers won the MLS Cup. The Sounders averaged 43,666 fans per game last year while the (relatively) nearby Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers average over 21,000 apiece. The New England Revolution averaged 19,367 fans a game. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Soccer_attendance I am a baseball fan who keeps promising to attend soccer matches. When my wife was out of town last fall I wandered down to a Portland Timbers game and paid a scalper $20 for a ticket that turned out to be void. I've dealt with scalpers my entire life and that's the first time I have been burned. I shrugged my shoulders and wandered home.
  2. Fortunately my life lacks a success void yearning to be filled by the on-field successes of my favorite sports teams. I despise generalizations, but bear with me. Red Sox fans tend to be visceral while Mariner fans tend to be cerebral. The Sox attract bandwagon fans in search of immediate gratification The Mariners attract aspiring problem-solvers because each year the franchise offers up a wealth of problems. At least that's my take. For what it's worth, I live in Portland, not Seattle. Here is a piece of Portland trivia for you Boston fans: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portland_Penny
  3. Oregon State is a college baseball powerhouse with two national titles despite its outdoor stadium in a climate that is not conducive to baseball in the spring. Nevertheless, on Sunday in Oregon I enjoyed four innings of NCAA Division III baseball as the Pacific University Boxers hosted the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers in the Northwest Conference Preseason Tournament.
  4. MassLive columnist Christopher Smith asks whether the Yu Darvish contract will impact the J.D. Martinez negotiations: http://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2018/02/yu_darvish_signing_cubs_report.html#incart_river_index
  5. BP Boston columnist Matthew Kory examines the PECOTA projections for the Red Sox: http://boston.locals.baseballprospectus.com/2018/02/09/the-red-sox-and-pecotas-pessimism/
  6. True enough. I was thinking of professional women's basketball. Perhaps UConn has crowded out interest in women's basketball at the professional level just as the Red Sox have crowded out interest in baseball at the college level. New England (and New York) have not fielded an NCAA Division I baseball champion since Holy Cross in 1952. https://www.ncaa.com/history/baseball/d1 When I joined my office in 1996 baseball was discussed in the lunchroom and the office fielded a softball team. Today soccer is the lunchroom talk and the office has a soccer team. This baseball fan is an old relic. Times have changed.
  7. I was thinking more along the lines of soccer and women's basketball when I responded to the post "Every city in the country envies Boston." Boston is a world-class city. Many folks on the West Coast enjoyed their time in Beantown before leaving for greener pastures.
  8. If the criteria are recent championships by professional men's teams in football, baseball, basketball and hockey.

  10. When David Price signed with the Red Sox the left-hander was a year younger than Yu Darvish's current age and had posted 32.0 fWAR in 218 career appearances, including 213 starts. Darvish has posted only 19.0 in 131 appearances, all starts. https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=3184&position=P https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=13074&position=P Both contracts will probably be viewed as overpays in the end.

  12. Wow. Someone's feelings are hurt. Kinda like the teenager with a crush on the high school sweetheart who won't return his affections. All I see is a free agent taking his time choosing his next employer.
  13. According to this November 2014 report from MLB Trade Rumors regarding the Red Sox signings of Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/11/red-sox-agree-to-terms-with-hanley-ramirez.html The Red Sox drafted outfielder Andrew Benintendi with their protected 2015 first-round pick. However, the Sox still managed a third-round pick in catcher Austin Rei after skipping the second round: https://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?team_ID=BOS&year_ID=2015&draft_type=junreg&query_type=franch_year&from_type_jc=0&from_type_hs=0&from_type_4y=0&from_type_unk=0
  14. That could make his less desirable destination even less desirable. J.D. Martinez could tell the Red Sox he is prepared to sign with another club if the Boston offer does not change by midnight. All we can speculate at this point is that J.D. Martinez has not reached an agreement with any team.
  15. Has a free agent ever signed with the Red Sox for less money than offered by another club? I think I've read reports suggesting that but I can't remember the specifics. The bottom line is that a free agent does not always go with the most money.
  16. It's not as if J.D. Martinez is the only free agent holding out for a better contract. It would be unfair to lay the blame exclusively at the feet of Scott Boras. The system may be broken and all stakeholders bear some responsibility. Each free agent is free to end negotiations and sign a contract at any time. That time has not arrived for most free agents.
  17. I don't know where J.D. Martinez would live but many MLB players live in Arizona during the offseason.
  18. The Diamondbacks are in Phoenix for Spring Training and the regular season while his former clubs -- the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers -- had Spring Training in Florida. I would not blame Martinez for not living in Detroit in the offseason.
  19. Because maintaining two homes is more complicated -- and more expensive -- than maintaining one home. https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/mlb/diamondbacks/2017/07/27/arizona-diamondbacks-j-d-martinez-adjusting-life-valley/515150001/
  20. Perhaps some players would prefer to play on a team that won as many games as the Red Sox last year, for a franchise with one World Series title in its short 20-year existence, in a modern facility, before forgiving fans, in a virtually snowless location that hosts Spring Training. Or not.
  21. FanGraphs columnist Jeff Sullivan addresses the limitations of projections: https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/lets-make-sure-were-honest-about-projections/
  22. If this is representative of Red Sox fans, I can understand why J.D. Martinez would want to play elsewhere ... even for less money.
  23. Non-economic factors are honorable.
  24. Perhaps J.D. Martinez and the Red Sox will reach a six-year, $150 million deal with deferred money that reduces the present-day value to $125 million. Or not. Scott Boras negotiated the largest-ever deferred-money contract for Max Scherzer: https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/max-scherzer-and-when-210-million-isnt-210-million/
  25. Jarrod Dyson was not a free agent a year ago. Dyson was a 32-year-old whose annual WAR topped out at 3.1 while Jackie Bradley Jr. posted 5.0 fWAR and 5.3 bWAR as a 26-year-old.
