  1. $5.95 million
  2. Eric Hosmer reportedly has agreed to an eight-year contract with the San Diego Padres:
  3. FanRag columnist Jon Heyman does not list the Red Sox as the favorite to land any of the top nine remaining free agents: https://www.fanragsports.com/mlb/inside-baseball-where-will-remaining-mlb-free-agents-go/
  4. Kyle Jensen hit 30 home runs as a 28-year-old outfielder/first baseman at Triple A Reno in 2016 and after short stint in Japan is a nearly 30-year-old nonroster invitee of the San Francisco Giants: https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=jensen001kyl https://aroundthefoghorn.com/2018/02/11/san-francisco-giants-2018-non-roster-invites/ Jorge Vazquez hit 32 home runs as a 29-year-old corner infielder for Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2011 but never played at the MLB level: https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=vazque002jor
  5. David Ortiz was 27 years old when the hit more than 20 MLB home runs in a season for the first time: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/ortizda01.shtml
  6. Bill James and PECIOTA project Rafael Devers with 30 home runs (the former in 571 at-bats and the latter behind a pay wall that shields projected plate appearances). Marcel projects Devers with 13 home runs in 320 plate appearances, FanGraphs Depth Charts 21 home runs in 574 plate appearances, Steamer 19 home runs in 514 plate appearances and ZiPS 27 home runs in 611 plate appearances.
  7. FanGraphs Depth Charts and Steamer project Eduardo Nunez with a 2018 wRC+ of 102: https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=6848&position=3B/SS ... while ZiPS is bearish with a projected 2018 wRC+ of 93: https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2018-zips-projections-boston-red-sox/ Nunez's 38-game sample with the Red Sox last year probably is not representative.
  8. OPS+ is ballpark-adjusted. https://www.fangraphs.com/library/offense/ops/ If one prefers wRC+, Nunez has a career wRC+ of 97, with a wRC+ of 100 with the Giants last year and 133 with the Red Sox: https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=6848&position=3B/SS
  9. As a a defensively limited player with a career OPS+ of 98, Eduardo Nunez posted an OPS+ of 99 in 76 games with the San Francisco Giants last year before posting an OPS+ of 129 in 38 games with the Red Sox. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nunezed02.shtml I expect Nunez, who turns 31 years old in June, to produce near his career norms. Depending on his contract, Nunez could be a wise pickup.
  10. Perhaps Tim Lincecum will set his sights higher.
  11. Perhaps non-economic issues are at play.
  12. MLB Trade Rumors looks at potential suitors for J.D. Martinez: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/02/what-other-teams-could-emerge-for-j-d-martinez.html#comments
  13. Over the Monster columnist Matt Collins omitted Esteban Quiroz in his analysis of Red Sox position battles: https://www.overthemonster.com/2018/2/14/17010494/red-sox-spring-training-position-battles I corrected that in the comments below the column.
  14. The Tampa Bay Rays sign J.D. Martin Oops ... wrong J.D. ... ez mistake.
  15. Jackie Bradley Jr. is underrated by many fans but I suspect front offices properly value Bradley.
  16. Slow down.:) Jose Abreu is a far better mentor to fellow Cuban Yoan Moncada than Hanley Ramirez (not to mention $9 million cheaper, three years younger, with more years of team control unless the dreaded option vests, and more productive with 9.1 to 0.6 fWAR over the last three seasons).
  17. I suspect J.D. Martinez is more patient than mad.
  18. The Red Sox are in the running for left-handed reliever Tony Watson, according to this tweet from Jon Heyman: What luxury tax implications would a Watson contract have? MLB Trade Rumors projected at two-year, $12 million contract for Watson: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/2017-18-top-50-mlb-free-agents-with-predictions.html
  19. I was going to attend the 40-year reunion of the 1969 Seattle Pilots -- made famous in Jim Bouton's classic book Ball Four -- but I broke my wrist in a bicycle mishap the morning of that afternoon gathering in August 2009. That evening I barely made it to the Mariner game where the Pilots were honored.
  20. So what part is BS? The posted photo was taken on my phone in the bottom of the first inning (as noted by the scoreboard) when the host Pacific Boxers advanced the runner visible at third base: http://www.goboxers.com/boxscore.aspx?id=4032&path=baseball
  21. Logan Morrison is only four days younger than J.D. Martinez.
  22. Let's look at the baseball months (average precipitation in inches): March: BOS 4.33, SEA 3.70 April: BOS 3.74, SEA 2.68 May: BOS 3.50, SEA 1.93 June: BOS 3.66, SEA 1.54 July: BOS 3.43, SEA 0.67 August: BOS 3.35, SEA 0.87 September: BOS 3.43, SEA 1.42 October: BOS 3.94, SEA 3.46 https://www.usclimatedata.com/climate/boston/massachusetts/united-states/usma0046 https://www.usclimatedata.com/climate/seattle/washington/united-states/uswa0844
  23. Boston has an average annual precipitation of 43.76 inches, Seattle an average annual precipitation of 34.1 inches and Portland an average annual precipitation of 35.98 inches.
  24. I suspect the net migration between Seattle and Boston suggests the typical Seattle resident does not envy the typical Bostonian. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5229083/Moving-study-People-continuing-west.html I like Boston, a world-class city, even though I've been there only three times in my 62 years on this celestial sphere. I survived 100 degree temperatures there in 1973 as a 17-year-old hitchhiker from Iowa. I did not return until 2010 when a friend and I made Fenway Park the first stop on our eight-day tour of six MLB stadiums on the East Coast. My final trip came in 2016 when my younger daughter competed in the Head of the Charles regatta. Again, Boston is a fine city. But I don't envy the people living there.
  25. Not unlike the international television ratings for the World Series.
