Perhaps Sandy Leon remains a trade candidate (although the 29 teams that passed on Leon for free are unlikely to surrender talent or money in a trade). The Red Sox might need to add a second piece to a trade. Or not.

My understanding is that, under the MLB CBA, if Sandy Leon clears waivers and refuses an assignment to the minors, he forfeits the $2.4 million (minus what he would be paid if he were simply released from his arbitration contract before the end of Spring Training).

I retained Ryan Brasier in my limited keeper fantasy league and took a $1 flier on Jenrry Mejia. I passed on Matt Barnes, who went for $5, and Craig Kimbrel, who went for $15. Mejia remains the dark horse.

Blake Swihart has appeared as a catcher in 121 MLB games (and in 342 minor league games). Evaluators have an idea whether the chocolate is to their liking.

I'm glad the Mariners are going with their four best starters instead of giving a start to icon Felix Hernandez. No. I try to limit myself to one league per season. In 2001 I joined my current league, which was formed in 1991. One of my closest friends is the lone remaining founding member.

The better plan may have been to place Blake Swihart on waivers in hopes that he would clear and be assigned to Pawtucket. Unlike Sandy Leon, Swihart could not refuse an assignment to Triple A. Unlike Leon, Swihart needs a season of consistent reps behind the plate. However, if the Red Sox were shopping their catchers all offseason as rumored, the interest generated probably gave the front office a decent idea of whether Swihart and Leon would clear waivers. The Sox may have waived the player more likely to clear waivers. Or not.
