  1. I retained Ryan Brasier in a rookie slot and took a flier on Jenrry Mejia at the fantasy auction, which means Matt Barnes is probably the Red Sox closer. I have Braiser and Seattle closer Hunter Strickland in my active lineup so perhaps I'll get a save tonight. Or not.
  2. If anyone is interested in the Seattle Mariners' offseason strategy, here is a piece from Seattle Times beat reporter Ryan Divish (brought out from behind the paywall by the Spokane Spokesman-Review): http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2019/mar/27/stepping-back-inside-the-mariners-decision-to-chan/
  3. Sandy Leon has an arbitration contract: https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/red-sox/red-sox-arbitration-tracker-will-mookie-betts-get-paid-deadline ... which was not guaranteed: http://m.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/guaranteed-contract
  4. Should the traditional "throwing day" be scrapped if the starter comes down with an arm problem?
  5. For what it's worth, I like the idea.
  6. While Red Sox and Yankee fans debate their rivalry, the other American League teams will go about their business. In the last nine World Series, the AL Central has represented the league four times, the AL West three times and the AL East twice. Over that span, an AL East team (Boston) has won two World Series titles, the AL Central one and the AL West one. It should be another interesting season.
  7. Many Seattle fans find Dave Sims annoying, although Sims rarely comes over to the radio side where I listen to Rick Rizz and Aaron Goldsmith (and Shannon Drayer and Mike Blowers).
  8. Chris Sale indeed has one more World Series ring than Marco Gonzales, who last season posted an ERA of 4.00 (not 4.50), finishing 23rd among all starters in fWAR, just ahead of Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=sta&lg=all&qual=10&type=8&season=2018&month=0&season1=2018&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 Trivia: Which pitcher has more postseason wins: Chris Sale or Marco Gonzales? Let's have a fun series ... and a fun season.
  9. According to a 2:09 pm EDT tweet from Boston Globe beat reporter Pete Abraham, Sandy Leon has yet to accept an assignment to Pawtucket:
  10. Perhaps Sandy Leon remains a trade candidate (although the 29 teams that passed on Leon for free are unlikely to surrender talent or money in a trade). The Red Sox might need to add a second piece to a trade. Or not.
  11. Jacob deGrom, who is nine months older than Chris Sale, has 892.2 MLB innings on his arm while Sale has 1,482.1 MLB innings on his arm. DeGrom has tossed 418.2 innings over the past two seasons while Sale has thrown 372.1 innings. The 2018 fWAR rankings: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=90&type=8&season=2018&month=0&season1=2018&ind=0&team=&rost=&age=&filter=&players= ... and over the past five seasons: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=90&type=8&season=2018&month=0&season1=2014&ind=0&team=&rost=&age=&filter=&players=
  12. My understanding is that, under the MLB CBA, if Sandy Leon clears waivers and refuses an assignment to the minors, he forfeits the $2.4 million (minus what he would be paid if he were simply released from his arbitration contract before the end of Spring Training).
  13. The Seattle Mariners should target Sandy Leon, according to this FanSided column I missed four days ago (before his waiver): https://sodomojo.com/2019/03/22/mariners-pursue-spring-trade-target/
  14. I retained Ryan Brasier in my limited keeper fantasy league and took a $1 flier on Jenrry Mejia. I passed on Matt Barnes, who went for $5, and Craig Kimbrel, who went for $15. Mejia remains the dark horse.
  15. By some metrics, Tyler Flowers was an elite defensive catcher last year: https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/sortable/index.php?cid=1899425
  16. LOL. The question was simply: Who remembers?
  17. http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2012/jan/18/johnson-wilson-going-into-ms-hall-of-fame-together/
  18. According to these measures the Mariners will play 26 games against teams better than the 2019 Red Sox: https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=ALL&teamid=3 https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/world-series-odds-2019-predictions-picks-teams-to-avoid-from-top-rated-mlb-expert/ http://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/id/26032042/world-series-divisional-odds-playoff-odds-all-30-mlb-teams-2019-season Hometown bias is found on most team forums. The Mariners rotate broadcast announcers but an outside fan's lack of familiarity can be excused.
  19. As stated, I am a fan of backup Seattle catcher David Freitas but am not counting on his improvement, defensively or otherwise. Compare the Baseball Prospectus "Advanced Catching Metrics" for Sandy Leon, Christian Vazquez, Blake Swihart and David Freitas (scroll down): https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/card/55951/sandy-leon https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/card/58767/christian-vazquez https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/card/70407/blake-swihart https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/card/66535/david-freitas
  20. http://forums.seattletimes.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=252644&sid=63f3eb165c4d33f91c24aab969f20ba3 I did not start that thread.
  21. Blake Swihart is entering his eighth or ninth professional season as a catcher.
  22. For what it's worth, two-time All Star catcher Wilson Ramos has a BMI of 32.5 (6-1, 245).
  23. Blake Swihart has appeared as a catcher in 121 MLB games (and in 342 minor league games). Evaluators have an idea whether the chocolate is to their liking.
