  1. Until J.D. Martinez did what he does.🙄
  2. Little cool at my seat in the shade. Otherwise enjoying the game.
  3. Beautiful weather in Seattle today.
  4. Last year Rick Porcello limited the Seattle Mariners to four runs over six innings in a 7-6 loss: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SEA/SEA201806150.shtml
  5. Gameday showed each pitch to Xander Bogaerts well within the strike zone.
  6. In the 27 innings so far in the series, two have ended with the Red Sox in the lead. Of course, the ninth inning of Game 2 was huge.
  7. The Mariners are generous.
  8. The Seattle bullpen remains vulnerable.
  9. Boston lefthander Eduardo Rodriguez and Seattle righthander Mike Leake faced each other twice last season, once in Seattle and once in Boston, with these aggregate stats: ER 2 GS, 10 IP, 5.40 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 1-1 W/L, 13 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 11 K, 3 BB ML 2 GS, 14 IP, 3.21 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 1-1 W/L, 11 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 6 K, 3 BB
  10. Like most clubs, the Mariners have sold the naming rights to their stadium since the venue opened in 1999. The Edwin Diaz trade was not about cash but about the long-term health of the franchise with the addition of prospects Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn. Despite last night's blown save, Seattle closer Hunter Strickland leads the majors in saves as the righthander awaits a likely trip to the Injured List. It's not tough to follow a 3-1 team that averages eight runs a game despite low expectations. Even though the Mariners are "stepping back" this season, this year's Pythagorean record may well top last year's 77-85 record. But it's all about the future with a beefed-up farm system and long-term assets such as Mitch Haniger, Domingo Santana, Marco Gonzales, Yusei Kikuchi, Mallex Smith and Omar Narvaez. We'll see empty seats at T-Mobile Park again this year as the Mariners probably finish in the middle third of American League attendance. I'll be filling my seat at Sunday's series finale.
  11. Depends on which Mike Leake shows up ... and which Eduardo Rodriguez shows up. Last year Seattle righthander Mike Leake tossed eight shutout innings (3H/2BB/5K) against the World Series champion Red Sox in a matchup with Eduardo Rodriguez at Fenway Park: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS201806230.shtml Six days earlier in Seattle the Red Sox scored five runs off Leake in six innings (8H/1BB/1K) as Rodriguez coasted to a win: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SEA/SEA201806170.shtml
  12. Rough night for my fantasy team with Ryan Brasier, Hunter Strickland and Yusei Kikuchi.
  13. The Seattle bullpen may be vulnerable.
  14. The Seattle Mariners have optioned to Triple A Tacoma their Home Opener catcher, David Freitas, who had a sacrifice fly and a walk on Thursday. Tom Murphy traded to Mariners WWW.MLB.COM SEATTLE -- Tom Murphy has been patiently awaiting his opportunity for several years with the Rockies, but he won’t have to sit long before getting a shot with the Mariners after being acquired in a trade on Friday. Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto has been looking to add depth to The Red Sox executed a double steal with Freitas behind the plate.
  15. One comp to Rafael Devers might be Atlanta infielder Ozzie Albies, who is 75 days younger than Devers. Devers posted an OPS+ of 112 in 240 plate appearances as a 20 year old in 2017. Albies posted an OPS+ of 112 in 244 plate appearances as a 20 year old in 2017. As a 21 year old in 2018, Devers posted an OPS+ of 94 in 490 plate appearances with 21 home runs and a slash line of .240/.298/.433/.731. As a 21 year old in 2018, Albies posted an OPS+ of 102 in 684 plate appearances with 24 home runs and a slash line of .261/.305/.452/.757. In 2018 Devers posted 0.0 bWAR and 1.0 fWAR while Albies, with superior defensive skills, posted 3.8 bWAR and 3.8 fWAR with an All Star appearance.
  16. Nathan Eovaldi has pitched well in three career starts against Seattle and the Mariners are unlikely to maintain their pace of nearly nine runs a game. The key may be the performance of Seattle lefthander Yusei Kikuchi, who will be making only his second MLB start.
  17. In 2006 I saw "Damn Yankees" on stage at a dinner theater down the street from Peoria Stadium after a day of Spring Training baseball in Arizona.
  18. The Seattle bullpen may be the Mariners' Achilles' heel. The game is not over.
  19. I retained Ryan Brasier in a rookie slot and took a flier on Jenrry Mejia at the fantasy auction, which means Matt Barnes is probably the Red Sox closer. I have Braiser and Seattle closer Hunter Strickland in my active lineup so perhaps I'll get a save tonight. Or not.
  20. If anyone is interested in the Seattle Mariners' offseason strategy, here is a piece from Seattle Times beat reporter Ryan Divish (brought out from behind the paywall by the Spokane Spokesman-Review): http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2019/mar/27/stepping-back-inside-the-mariners-decision-to-chan/
  21. Sandy Leon has an arbitration contract: https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/red-sox/red-sox-arbitration-tracker-will-mookie-betts-get-paid-deadline ... which was not guaranteed: http://m.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/guaranteed-contract
  22. Should the traditional "throwing day" be scrapped if the starter comes down with an arm problem?
  23. For what it's worth, I like the idea.
  24. While Red Sox and Yankee fans debate their rivalry, the other American League teams will go about their business. In the last nine World Series, the AL Central has represented the league four times, the AL West three times and the AL East twice. Over that span, an AL East team (Boston) has won two World Series titles, the AL Central one and the AL West one. It should be another interesting season.
