Without checking out the new CBA, I would think Bloom could offer Eovaldi a draft pick. Would Nate accept? He shouldn’t, but that doesn’t mean he won’t. And if he accepted, as much as I don’t like him this year, I would be more inclined to be receptive of him on a one year deal…

Agreed. And maybe one or two more, like Ward, will see time. I have no faith in getting full seasons from either Sale or Paxton…

Oh I’m sure some of the criticisms reach those levels. Schwarber appears to be the actual biggest loss from the 2021 team. Much more so than the largely fungible Renfroe, who seems to be an annual non-tender candidate. Small market Milwaukee will have an uncomfortable decision to make themselves. (Renfroe makes $7.6 mill this year and is looking at a $10-12 mill salary in 2023. Christian Yelich, at $26mill, is the only Brewer making more than $8.5mill.)

It was odd to trade Vazquez but Eovaldi or Martinez. But: 1. Was anyone interested in meeting Bloom’s price? Or interested at all? For all the wild flurry of moves that happen at the deadline each year, the fact is the majority of trade candidates with expiring contracts stay put. 2. Neither Eovaldi nor Martinez have been particularly good this year. Vazquez was a far more desirable candidate. 3. Maybe much like with Bogaerts, the goal wasn’t so much to unload them but to keep players the Sox want to negotiate with. (I hope not. I see very little worth bringing back.)

“Deconstruction” might be a tad hyperbolic. 7 of the 9 lineup starters are the same. And while many focus on the downgrade in RF from Bradley to Renfroe, not one person seems to mention the upgrade at 2b over last season’s mishmash/trial by fire/names out of a hat. Pop quiz: what logged the most and second most innings at 2b last year for the Sox? If you guessed Marwin Gonzalez and Michael Chavis, you’re dead wrong. It was Kike and Arroyo. But Marwin and Chavis were third and fourth. And the starter once Kike moved to CF was largely Arroyo (who is still with the Sox). So has Story/Bradley been that much worse than Renfroe/Arroyo?

My 2023 preview. And bear in mind if you do not like these, that’s a good y thing. My prediction track record is horrible. 1. Bogaerts will not be re-signed. I want him to return but I don’t think it will happen. 2. The 2023 winner of the Benintendi Award given to the player who gets traded with no warning is Tanner Houck. No idea where. 3. Sox need OF and the free agency class is weak. Expect trade targets to be Ramon Laureano, Anthony Santander, Bryan Reynolds, Garrett Cooper, and Ian Happ. (Basically a bunch of arb eligible guys on cheaper teams.) 4. Bullpen after Whitlock and Schreiber? Not sure. 5. Other names DFAd, non-tendered, or traded: Franchy Cordero, Darwinzon Hernandez, Jarren Duran.

The 2023 rotation appears to be drawn up. Sale/Paxton/Pivetta/Crawford/Winckowski. With Bello and Mats already on the 40 man as depth. The Sox don’t need to evaluate Paxton; the goal was always to pick up that option…

That applies to nearly every sports owner, including those other franchises. If the Patriots are 1-10, it’s a safe bet attendance will drop. But that doesn’t necessarily mean a boon for the Bruins. The Sox struggled mightily throughout all of July. Attendance did drop. But how many stayed home so they could save up for Celtics’ tickets?

There’s a more than significant overlap in the fanbases of those teams. And none of them play in the summer. I doubt there are all that many people who avoid Fenway because they prefer saving money to go to Gillette…

The financial side of the Hosmer trade was outstanding. From that viewpoint I don’t get why San Diego didn’t just keep him. From a baseball standpoint, I’m far from thrilled. I hope Hosmer does well but I full expect a .700-.750 OPS each season going forward…

The difference is those who are not fans of Dombrowski criticize Dombrowski. Whereas dgalehouse is not a fan of Bloom and criticizes people who like Bloom. In fact, most Bloom supporters criticize Bloom more than he does…

If Bogaerts can’t/won’t be extended, Enmanuel Valdez is off to a hit start in Worcester pushing for 2b. The FA OF class is weak (and won’t containJudge, especially if he breaks Maris’ still-standing AL home run record), but there’s always some arb eligibles that teams want to move. I mentioned Laureano already. Cody Bellinger is a non tender candidate. Bryan Reynolds is one that should grab lots of attention…

I’m sure both want that kind of cash. But both have agents telling them “ not happening, dude.” Soto is 23 years old (24 in October) and despite this one year has already established himself among the best hitters in MLB despite being only one year older than the top overall pick in last year’s draft. By the time he is 27, he very well might make Mike Trout look like Tim Salmon. Bogaerts is 30 and probably looking may a deal close to the 7 year $175 of Marcus Semien last year. I put Bogaerts at 6/$150, I might be light. Devers was offered something similar to the deal Matt Olson got from Atlanta (8 yrs $168mill) and commented the Sox were “about $100 mill off.” Since I doubt he wanted $68mill, let’s put him at $270mill for 9 years.

Leave catcher. Extend Bogaerts, Devers. Make a run at Ramon Laureano for CF. (BTV accepted Yorke and Duran, but would Forst?) Rotation should be Sale, Paxton, Pivetta, Winckowski, and either Whitlock or Crawford. (I’m on the Crawford Train) Bullpen starts with Houck, Whitlock/Crawford, Schreiber, German, and still has Barnes and Brasier. A couple arms to push Barnes and Brasier further down on the depth chart would be cool.

But then comes the obvious questions. How long do you give it to not work out? And what options will be available between then and the end of July? It’s not like some sort of steady stream of first basemen were out looking for work. I’m sure the Sox could have grabbed a few disgruntled Amazon employees and lured them to the clubhouse with promises of restroom breaks. But would this really be any better? And the answer here is never “it would have to be.” As low of a rung as Cordero/Dalbec represent on the MLB ladder, they’re still higher up than many even in AAA can reach…

There are actually quite a few successful Swiss Army knife types in MLB. Our own Kike Hernandez being a prime example. Most are more the Chad Pinder/Joey Wendle type who get maybe 1.5-2.5 fWAR in a good year. One of the more successful one in recent years might actually be Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who, in his brief career has already excelled defensively at 3b (Gold Glove winner), shortstop, and even did a fair job as a catcher. They do serve very useful purposes for small market teas plus those on a budget crunch.

The JBJ trade didn’t work out because JBJ didn’t bounce back. It made sense at the time to those who saw the need to improve OF defense. But it didn’t work out overall. The results are not always in the plan. I’m pretty sure when DD extended Sale, the plan wasn’t to have him make 11 starts over the next 3 years. The plan when Bloom extended Barnes wasn’t to watch him revert into a C-League high school pitcher. I’m not sure who decided to play Cordero at 1b or Arroyo in RF. But the flexible do make sense sometimes, especially if you can’t afford real depth. It’s worth noting none of them signed anything longer than a 2 year deal. But if you think JBJ was a bad idea and think playing guys out of position should never happen, does that mean you liked using Renfroe in CF last year?
