  1. The last 3-game series against the Yankees in which the Sox won 2 games to 1 represents their ONLY series win against an AL East team to date this season…
  2. Definitely did here. I always kept him around for my 2023 thread posts, but not because I wanted him there. Just because I knew he would be, much to my chagrin. I’ve even thrown out bad contract swaps, like Barnes for NYM C James McCann. But as of now, Mr. Barnes has my attention in a different way…
  3. They have a lot of faith in him. And if it pans out, his AAV could easily wind up being an absurdly low $17.5mill, which means the Mariners could have a 5-tool All Star CF locked up for what 29 other teams pay for a free agent closer…
  4. Even if it’s just as trade bait…
  5. Fair point
  6. It was Brock. Right?
  7. Maybe there’s a reason no one ever refers to him as Mature Red?
  8. I never thought about using salary as a differentiator. There is merit to that notion for multiple reasons…
  9. No shame in losing to Lolich. It’s not hard to make an argument he belongs in Cooperstown as well…
  10. Can we come up with cool and possibly even alphabetic names for #2 through #5? I’ll throw out Beta for a #2. Although we don’td this turning into Brave New World…
  11. I’ve always thought of it as a relative term. Your best pitcher is your ace. As for the “he’s a #1” or a “#2”, that’s all just as subjective. Just get the 5 best pitchers you can get out there. I am 99.9999% certain anyone categorizing pitchers by numbers like that is doing it without actual criteria. While certainly not a horrible practice, it does get tough to defend those labels…
  12. A lot of us have moved past that…
  13. You back pedal nicely. He’s an excellent CF. If you were actually judging solely by the eye test (as you claim), you would have noticed he’s played 150 out of 194 games in Boston as a CF. So not sure where eye test has so many positions. Overall he has struggled to hit this year, but given his career offense and his extremely good defense at multiple positions, he is a good ball player. No one called him a superstar. No need to try to exaggerate…
  14. Anyone who says Kike isn’t a good ball player or thinks he’s “just a utility man” and then spouts off about the EYE TEST showing him everything he needs to know, needs to visit an optometrist and is a lousy advocate for the Eye Test Crowd…
  15. Matt has an ERA of 1.74 since coming off the IL…
  16. Mrs. Brasier, for one…
  17. I’m sure someone mentored Lucchino at one point in his career. But yes, Epstein was the interim GM until Bill Beane declined the offer and decided to stay in Oakland
  18. Denny!!! We agree on something related to baseball!!
  19. That might be 4-5 pitchers per decade..
  20. I see no problems with that. Epstein was just starting out. Lucchino was a seasoned sports executive with a World Series ring, Super Bowl ring, and Final Four watch to his credit. And Epstein was clearly willing to listen because he knew he didn’t know how to run an MLB franchise. Yep, even Epstein could admit that. Humility is very important…
  21. Judging any player by just one year isn’t good. Any player can have a bad year. And when I was a wee lad, I met a wise man and he told me “never trust a man who judges outfield defense by watching games on TV.” At the time I didn’t know what to make of it…
  22. In response to your comment about wanting a more complete player..
  23. He contributes. He was a 4.1 fWAR player last year. I don’t care if you don’t like fWAR either…
