  1. The same way Renfroe went from being a guy Tampa released rather than pay $3mill, to a player somehow drawing favorable comparisons to Dwight Evans?
  2. Then totes right; it’s not part of his job. He can’t be “one of the guys” if his job involves releasing other guys…
  3. Not only 3 games out but they likely anticipated Chris Sale coming back, or at least not being stupid enough to go bike riding…
  4. Do they even have to add him to the 40 man roster? He’s not listed as Rule 5 eligible on Soxprospects. Not ever. If the Sox don’t have to add him, he’s not in the picture…
  5. If the Sox keep Casas and Dalbec, besides some growing pains, what’s the issue?
  6. Cordero is a DFA candidate. We know this because, despite having an option left, he has been DFAd before. Dalbec could move as well, but the Sox are also trying to increase his versatility (and with some success). Trading Casas was part of the prediction, although IMO the least likely option of the three…
  7. His only attribute is someone else pays for him. He doesn’t hit well enough to DH and doesn’t field well enough to push Casas to DH. I suspect a low budget team looking for help at 1b (Milwaukee? Oakland? Pittsburgh?) may take a flier or maybe SD might realize they can’t afford Josh Bell and are paying for Hosmer anyway…
  8. Prediction The Sox will either trade one of Casas or Hosmer or DFA Hosmer. I just don’t see this team dedicating two 40 man roster spots to 1b and trying to squeeze the protectables on to the same roster before the Rule 5 draft…
  9. Finally come around to my valuation of Bogaerts…
  10. That’s why I originally said it looks like he’s lost power but I’m not sure it’s a bad thing
  11. Why not? They had no $$$ to bring in anyone better than Travis Shaw and he certainly provided optimism at the end of last year. But I think we know more about what Dalbec is. He appears to be a weak side platoon option at the plate…
  12. Is that even true? I think a lot of people hear “analytics” and leap to the conclusion that everything is therefore data-driven robotics with no consideration for other human beings whatsoever. If you watch interviews with Bloom, he certainly comes off as personable…
  13. And has played in MLB in parts of 10 different seasons…
  14. There’s a difference in losing power and declining. The problem with OPS and OPS+ here is Bogaerts has seen rises in OBP, due to a slight increase in BB% but also, this year especially, a huge bump in BABIP (.375!!). Some of this is likely due to the fact that his last two seasons are his two highest for LD% per Fangraphs. (It’s hard to quantify that without knowing exactly what Fangraphs considers a line drive.)
  15. Bogaerts’ ISO went from .246 to .202 to .198 to .156. That’s a drop in power…
  16. Think of that viral Javier Baez/Will Craig scenario from a couple years ago. At any point, Craig could have touched Baez or 1b and nullified that run…
  17. Fair enough. But I will add the caveat that if they do, it won’t work out as expected…
  18. To be fair, his BA is up a bit and his SLG is down a bit. But I’m not so sure that’s the demise some think it is…
  19. Why? The Yankees are going to pay $15mill to a pitcher with 104 IP in the last 4 seasons after giving him roughly $36million to injure himself while signing the contract. Severino might not be the same guy they gave that contract to. Even for one year, they’d be prudent to decline the option and negotiate. Severino will NOT be in demand after his lack of action and will certainly not be getting a multi-year deal…
  20. Two free agent stats that surprised me. OPS+ since 2020 Bogaerts 132 Nimmo 129 And I bet Nimmo signs for roughly half the AAV wOBA since 2020 Betts .377 (14th in MLB) Brandon Belt .375 (15th in MLB) That really shocked me about Belt, although his injury history (which is very substantial) and his poor 2021 season probably put him in the back of even the DH picture…
  21. Of course. All runs count if it’s only the second out…
  22. JD has been declining since 2018. Devers came back off the IL and went into an immediate funk. Bogaerts’ RBIs are more likely due to a lost focus on OBP…
  23. Dalbec was a massive disappointment to me too. I posted something somewhere to that effect on this forum…
  24. The run would not have counted. The play was still a force out scenario regardless of whether the base is tagged or the runner…
  25. The box score looked horrible, but he was actually hitting 97-98 regularly and at least keeping it around the zone. The arm has life, and not every debut is representative. The last real flamethrower like this the Sox brought up was Darwinzon Hernandez, and German certainly appeared to have better control than him…
