  1. If Duran has more potential, that makes him the better trade candidate in some ways...
  2. Well, not with Pivetta in there...
  3. Team USA also had a decent amount of pitchers who played in Asian professional leagues, including not onlyKelly, but also Miles Mikolas and Nick Martinez. Not sure if they were the best available or their international competition experience figured to be useful or both...
  4. I don't think you'll ever see that, much like how we rarely send our best players to Team USA for the Olympics in basketball. It's probably true that players from other countries view the WBC not only as national pride, but also as an opportunity to showcase themselves to MLB. Pete Moylan, for example, received a spring training invite based on his performance in the WBC for the Australian team. (He wasn't a total unknown at the time, as he had been part of the Twins farm system. But he failed to capitalize on that chance.) USA players just won't ever need that opportunity...
  5. As he has options, I doubt it. His advantage over everyone else is that he is on the 40 man, but he'd probably be beter off if they just send him to Worcester and let him play 2B/SS/OF and see if this defensive experiment is better than Duran. The last spot on the 26 man roster is probably a battle between Tapia and Alfaro. While both could make it if Wong goes to Worcester, that would require opening 2 slots on the 40 man roster. (And I'm not even sure they want to open just one!) Of course, whoever gets chosen, theyre likely just holding a spot for Mondesi...
  6. Then you know your Japanese players better than I do…
  7. It’s funny how we think “well, we didn’t send all out best players,” but we assume Japan did…
  8. Thinking they pass Tampa, I assume? Not impossible. But the question is - will 88 wins get them into the postseason? Last year it would have in either league…
  9. You’re citing the potential offensive upside of a 34yo who’s never had a .300 OBP in a season where he’s had more than 130 plate appearances? Duvall is a good defender on the corners, but the only reason he isn’t considered another Three True Outcome hitter is that he’s not very good at walking. I think Verdugo is the upside play here…
  10. He had a 5.85 ERA in the playoffs last year…
  11. You’d like that, wouldn’t you?
  12. What did Alex Verdugo ever do to you?
  13. Duvall gives me more concern than Turner…
  14. Lowering expectations?
  15. Also that whole 2022 AL Cy Young thing. But, yes, Kate Upton…
  16. Verlander’s deal is short, but it’s a $43.3 mill AAV for a 40yo starting pitcher who pitched 6 innings total in 2020 and 2021 combined…
  17. That’s why I like Yoshida first and why I was (sort of) on the Nimmo bandwagon last season. The Sox haven’t really embraced OBP as an offensive weapon in a while.*. It worked when they did it. Time to bring it back. *Yoshida could change this.
  18. That’s ok too. Not sure about this whole Yoshida-4th thing. I do think Arroyo is an underrated leadoff option. I thought about him there but his durability bothers me…
  19. Let’s get those World Series games into December!!
  20. And do the Sox have guys to get on base in front of him?
  21. Tough to really have a good (IMO, not Cora’s) batting order. I’d go with: Yoshida LF Devers 3b Turner DH Casas 1b Duvall CF Verdugo RF Hernandez SS McGuire C Arroyo 2b But I honestly don’t like it much…
  22. Yes, but with a better farm. Also - and this seems off to say - the Dodgers seem more rational with their contracts. For example, but the Dodgers guaranteed Freddie Freeman the same money the Mets guaranteed to Brandon Nimmo. Now Nimmo is younger and has it spread out over more years. But he’s also more injury-prone, plays a tougher position, and, well, isn’t a former MVP…
  23. So… not Duvall…
  24. Batting Devers second gets him 18 more PA on average. It might not seem like much but Devers’ plate appearances are good to maximize. The #3 spot is the most likely hitter to come up with 2 outs and no one on base. Obviously it’s not a place to dump a mediocre hitter, because the 3 spot still gets lots of plate and should have a fair amount of RBI opportunities, but it’s not the ideal location for Devers. Not really sure who I would bat there (and absolutely no idea who Cora would). I also liked the idea of Yoshida at leadoff since the Sox haven’t had a good leadoff hitter since Betts. Cora probably sticks with Kike there, which seems like a bad idea that he just keeps trying…
  25. I wouldn’t call it “judicious,” but I will say it want blatantly stupid…
