  1. Ok, if you like. Just because it didn’t work out doesn’t mean he want their top priority, right? After all, that whole concept of “top priority” doesn’t imply any sort of intensity; it just means nothing else was more important at the time. But we do know that they viewed Devers as a DH/1b and the initial offer was comparable to Matt Olson’s contract. Presumably this came up in talks with Devers. So there is the possibility that when negotiating with Bogaerts, the initial talks also included discussions of changing position off shortstop. In the past, Bogaerts has been openly reluctant to change, and I don’t know if he still is. But if he (or his reps) stated the preference was to remain at shortstop, certainly it explains why the Sox didn’t go beyond 4 years initially. It does make me wonder if San Diego broached the subject of changing positions with Bogaerts. Or if they ignored it, or an 11 year deal made Bogaerts more flexible…
  2. That is not how minor league promotions work. Goodrum is supposedly the AAA shortstop, but as he is not on the 40 man roster, he cannot be promoted…
  3. There’s always the possibility they’re being too honest…
  4. And a deal for Miranda and Ober would be equally close and make even more sense for Boston…
  5. And judging by the comments, not garnering much support. One of those “hey let’s trade our spare parts for a superstar” blogs. If the Sox shop Devers, they will absolutely see more exciting packages than Kepler and Arraez…
  6. DD might have been fired for spending too much. It would explain a lot. Fans may only care about winning here and now, but owners can have different key performance indicators….
  7. Not sure they wanted him period. Or at least wanted him to move off shortstop…
  8. You’re operating on the assumption that they ever wanted to bring Bogaerts back…
  9. First of all, 15 of Bogaerts’ 73 RBIs were himself; he only drove in 58 teammates…
  10. Those players sign deals that Sox players (and fans) call lowball offers. The Sox reportedly offered Betts $300mill after 2019. For the 3 previous seasons, Betts was second in MLB in fWAR, but this $300mill offer was a lowball. The player third in fWAR over that timeframe was Alex Bregman, who, one year later, signed a contract worth $100mill over 6 years. That’s lower than the reported offer to Bogaerts! Heck, it’s the lower than the deal Bogaerts opted out of. But their player signed. Why?
  11. Yes, short term. The 2013 team was built through free agency, but that success didn’t even come close to casting over into 2014 and 2015…
  12. If you have the farm producing minimum wage talent - even if they’re not call Stars - it gets a lot easier to carry those albatross contracts. So the questions now are - are the Sox going to wait until they have the farm before they take on albatross contracts again? Are they just going to eschew them forever? Maybe reserve bigger deals for their own pre-arb players? If so, it gets easier to answer questions about the remainder of the off-season…
  13. He is. I know there is the slim chance he could bounce back if dealt, but for three seasons now he’s been an Injured List Msinstay and I wouldn’t blame the FO one bit of they unloaded him. I do ironically see that as a white flag on 2023, because really, as it stands now, the season does rest on the performance of Sale and Paxton, precarious as that is…
  14. He also made more pro-rated money for than those six IP than the other three starters made all year. Not sure what your point is. “But they were six really good innings.”…
  15. And a lot of people might not want to watch Sale stay and pitch 6 IP next year before getting taken out for the season in some freak accident like getting trampled in a goat stampede or struck by a meteor while navigating a crosswalk…
  16. After 48 IP in 3 years, I wouldn’t be upset trading Sale even if he was healthy. He’s been the most frustrating player on the team the past 3 years…
  17. The point is using those two is DeJong is a salary dump at $11mill for a player who hasn’t hit (OPS+ 76 in last 3 seasons) since his rookie year, and Flaherty (114 IP in the last 2 seasons) is just as risky as Sale, possibly more so. And is likely to get a raise over his $5mill salary in 2022. Of course DeJong and Flaherty also each have one year of control left, and likely cost a little over $16mill total. With 2 years and $55mill left, St. Louis might prefer the smaller risk as well. This deal might still be unlikely but is probably a best case scenario for a Sale trade that will at best return bad contracts, injury risks or both…
  18. Or make some kind of weird deal, like Sale to St. Louis for DeJong and Flaherty…
  19. That only took 4 posts!!
  20. And none of us knows what goes into these negotiations. I can see reasons why the Sox never wanted to extend Bogaerts, but I can’t promise they’re related or are even considerations when it came time to actually hammer out a deal. And no one else here can either. But the reason to bring up their potential existence is to remember that we don’t know the whole story…
  21. Just because someone is drawing trade interest doesn’t mean their making an offer that makes sense for Boston…
  22. It’s still Unboxing Day here… (rimshot)
  23. Incorrect. Players have to pay income tax in EVERY STATE they play in. And pay tax on the amount earned in that state. So if they play 3 games in Kansas City and then free gables in Houston, that in income gets filed for those games in Missouri and Texas. Every touring entertainer does this…
  24. There is some selectivity when it comes to the Sox repeating mistakes. The team has struggled with injuries, so they should never acquire a player with injury history. The Sox have had bad outfield defenders, so clearly the coaches can’t save anyone and the Sox need to avoid these defensive question marks. The Sox have been burned by long, large contracts. But hey, if you fall off that horse…
  25. I just made a post with similar theories. It’s stuff we don’t and may never know, but that doesn’t mean it never existed…
