  1. Entirely possible the Sox FO only sees the potential to be Fungibles in Ward and Song…
  2. Hindsight or not, these situations are far from resolved…
  3. He was. But there are no stats for that season yet for obvious reasons. This wasn’t an oversight by Bloom and the Military List isn’t some form of protection from the Rule 5 draft. If the Military List did provide exception from the Rule 5 draft, Song wouldn’t have even been eligible for 4 more years…
  4. Incorrect. This has been explained before. https://www.soxprospects.com/players/song-noah.htm Please look at his team for 2021 and 2022. This wasn’t an oversight. This was another GM taking a chance…
  5. I suppose I’m hoping they push it heavily in March so players get accustomed to that Rule long before October…
  6. I meant if he had been exposed (as in someone else protected over him), and been selected. Or claimed off waivers. Or sold to the Gypsies…
  7. Yeah but not as a loss by me, but rather as a potential trade with Philly…
  8. Right. He’s a Rule 5 pick until he completes a year on the 26 or until someone buys (or trades) for him with Boston. Song is like a leased car, and the Sox are his auto dealer. If Philly wants out of the lease in less than the one year (re: agreed upon lease length), they can exercise their “option to buy” him from Boston and work something out a deal. But until they do, the terms of the lease are in effect, no matter who’s driving.
  9. I was absolutely very down on it at first. Still not going to call it a good job. But I think in the end it will probably all be inconsequential. Although if someone had selected Ort, I’d smile wider…
  10. I look at it this way. The same people who decided Whitlock was a good Rule 5 selection are the exact same ones who chose not to protect Song and Ward. I’m not wild about Ort, who strikes me as someone who easily clears waivers, but I would not have replaced him with Song, and probably not with Ward (despite my earlier complaints). For me, I’d have kept Frank German over both of them…
  11. So it’s a clear path to success? The Yankees not protecting Whitlock is an even less extreme example of the Sox not protecting Song. At least Whitlock had some experience/success in AA with the Yankees. In hindsight, do you protect Song over anyone?
  12. If Philly completes a trade with Boston for Song, he becomes their property just like any other player they trade for. But otherwise he’s on this status where he can’t be optioned to the minors, and that status follows him in trades for a full season..
  13. What is strange?
  14. A bunch of 26yo pitchers with almost no AAA experience and very little AA experience (and even less success). We may get 2 of them back. (Make your pick.) Granted, I’m still not wild about Ort and Hamilton…
  15. At some point I wonder if Sox fans will realize what we lost in this year’s Rule 5 draft Noah Song - turns 26 in May. 17 career IP in low A ball. Thad Ward - already 26. 41 career IP above A-ball, all in AA. Andrew Politi - also 26. Played every minor league level, but only impressed in AAA. Not so sure we lost anything better than Jay Groome here…
  16. That was 2020, when he wasn’t 3 years into inactivity. Heck he technically had not missed time yet. But let’s say they did. Shouldn’t they? By not pitching for 3 years and being completely away from baseball, did he likely get better or worse?
  17. The freaking out over Song is so over the top. It really is. Not only has he not pitched in 3 years, back in 2020 many of the scouting orgs ranked him behind Jeter Downs, Bobby Dalbec and Gilberto Jimenez…
  18. I think a lot of people are not understanding how Rule 5 trades work. All the comments above seemed to think it was trading for Song. No a trade at this point will be getting something for Song. And if Dombrowski wants to keep Song and do what’s actually best for Song (re:minors), he’ll unload a prospect for him. Because trading away farm pieces has never been an issue for Dombrowski, especially compared to other execs…
  19. And if there is anyone who also would overlay heavily to keep him, it would also be Dombrowski…
  20. If he comes back to Boston, he would need to clear waivers first. (I looked this up.). Any claiming team accepts his Rule 5 status. If he goes unclaimed, he goes back to Boston. His Rule 5 status follows him in any trades as well. Unless Philly works out a trade with Boston to keep him as their own. Then his Rule 5 status ends and he is property of Philadelphia…
  21. Not how that trade works. They would send the Sox someone, like maybe RHP Andy McFarlane or RHP Alex Baker…
  22. I would have kept Ward over Hamilton and probably kept Politi over maybe Ort. No way I would have added Song. I would have figured him to be safe from Rule 5 for a bunch of reasons. And one thing I don’t even know about Song, if he was added to the 40 man while on the Military List, would he still lose the option year?
  23. One could argue Politi was a more egregious omission than Song. Song - as we’ve heard - hasn’t pitched in 3 years and did so for 17IP in Lowell back when he was pitching. And since he didn’t even have his Navy clearance, he looked like he should be extremely safe from being taken. Politi, on the other hand, might have the looser ceiling, but he was right there on the cusp of becoming a mediocre MLB relief pitcher…
  24. Frankly I think Hamilton is the biggest question mark. He’s fast and is an excellent base runner. And what else? He’s OK as a hitter and, per Soxprospects, nothing special defensively. I mean, even Jarren Duran excelled at hitting minor league pitching. So what is Hamilton? The next Terrance Gore? I get keeping Brasier and Ort over him. The Sox do need someone in the bullpen…
  25. Maybe Napoleon McCallum?
