  1. Story was my least favorite from that SS free agent class. The only reason I liked that deal was it killed the notion the Sox were done spending big on free agents. The guy is a good player and a solid defensive SS when healthy. His fWAR was comparable to Bogaerts. But he’s struggled to stay on the field in Boston, which he never did in Colorado…
  2. Garza is a fringe talent at best. The problem is the Sox pitchers in the upper minors, especially Mata (currently injured), Walter and Murphy have all simultaneously collapsed…
  3. Was that really a good performance from Seabold or just a bad one from the offense?
  4. Yeah he had the pieces for a much better defense. But not replacing Story with a (healthy) SS had a significant trickle-down effect…
  5. Probably not. Starting pitching is only one way - and clearly the most expensive way - to win. Look at this years top teams. Tampa has maybe 3 actual SP (4 if Rasmussen is healthy). They certainly have one guy (McClanahan) everyone would call an ace.. They use starters and bullpen arms a lot. Baltimore has no pitcher anyone would call an ace, and probably no SP most would consider a #2. Texas went out and bought an ace. He’s out for the year. But are getting by with other acquisitions and a ridiculously good defense. These are the best teams. Two have aces. All 3 have great defense, which is their common thread…
  6. And it’s official. Verdugo’s failure to slide lost the game
  7. It was a dumb call to bunt there. It wasn’ta suicide squeeze and the infield was in…
  8. That inning is just the epitome of this stretch for the Sox. If Duran doesn’t steal third, McGuire’s line drive likely goes between the first baseman and second baseman and Duran scores. Even when they do something right, it hurts them…
  9. Will Cora get gutsy and call for the steal of home?
  10. Can’t fault McGuire there..
  11. Arroyo with 2 hard shots and nothing to show for it…
  12. Most of us said that 3 weeks ago..,
  13. So you’re saying he will be benched tomorrow…
  14. Certainly not today. Although when teams are struggling, there always seems to be a tendency to try to force something that often turns out boneheaded in hindsight. Like Wong trying for second last night..
  15. So they’re replacing Bird with Hand. Please tell me Matt Bush is warming up next…
  16. But Verdugo all but stopped after rounding third. He didn’t do that and he scored easily…
  17. Yes but they can go down, which of why o say they tend towards being cumulative…
  18. On the bright side, the baserunning f*** up by Verdugo just became irrelevant since Kluber will give up the next 6 runs…
  19. Game got close again and Cora hates that…
  20. Then that one is on Verdugo. And we can safely assume it will be important…
  21. Actually the runner should run through when in doubt. Sliding slows you down and that could be the difference. But yes, Devers needs to let him know…
  22. To be fair to Verdugo, it’s the job of the on-deck hitter to signal if he needs to slide. I didn’t see, but did Devers signal for him to get down?
  23. Are you comforted if I tell you that it’s really just a moderately supported theory?
  24. Most of that was a disastrous April. May and June have been a substantial improvement. Taking Kluber out of the rotation was a big reason…
