Story was my least favorite from that SS free agent class. The only reason I liked that deal was it killed the notion the Sox were done spending big on free agents. The guy is a good player and a solid defensive SS when healthy. His fWAR was comparable to Bogaerts. But he’s struggled to stay on the field in Boston, which he never did in Colorado… -
Garza is a fringe talent at best. The problem is the Sox pitchers in the upper minors, especially Mata (currently injured), Walter and Murphy have all simultaneously collapsed…

Yeah he had the pieces for a much better defense. But not replacing Story with a (healthy) SS had a significant trickle-down effect… -

Probably not. Starting pitching is only one way - and clearly the most expensive way - to win. Look at this years top teams. Tampa has maybe 3 actual SP (4 if Rasmussen is healthy). They certainly have one guy (McClanahan) everyone would call an ace.. They use starters and bullpen arms a lot. Baltimore has no pitcher anyone would call an ace, and probably no SP most would consider a #2. Texas went out and bought an ace. He’s out for the year. But are getting by with other acquisitions and a ridiculously good defense. These are the best teams. Two have aces. All 3 have great defense, which is their common thread… -

That inning is just the epitome of this stretch for the Sox. If Duran doesn’t steal third, McGuire’s line drive likely goes between the first baseman and second baseman and Duran scores. Even when they do something right, it hurts them…

Actually the runner should run through when in doubt. Sliding slows you down and that could be the difference. But yes, Devers needs to let him know…

To be fair to Verdugo, it’s the job of the on-deck hitter to signal if he needs to slide. I didn’t see, but did Devers signal for him to get down?
