St. Louis did use him in CF a couple years ago. And a little last year. DRS didn’t like him out there, but UZR did. OAA was neutral. But the total sample was only 393 innings over 2 seasons…

The Sox don’t need a RHH 1b. They really only need a backup for Casas’ scheduled days off (which can be controlled) and in case he has to leave mid-game for whatever reason…

Not likely. Why not spend out on defense and help out all the pitchers. Not to mention, spent on which pitcher? Have you seen the options out there?

1. If they sign him, Yoshida is. Not sure of the difference if the Sox have Duvall as an OF and Yoshida as z as DH as opposed to Yoshida as an OF and Soler as a DH. I mean besides the obvious difference in defense. 2. If Breslow implements his “no set DH” plan and Cora actually plays along, Soler is an outfielder.

And yet they're still looking at outfielders. I'm not so sure 6 outfielders on the 40 man roster constitutes an overabundance, especially if you're starting 4...

I would argue Duvall makes more sense, as he can be a starting RF. Cooper is a weak OF and probably best limited to backup 1b/DH duty. And it's not like they are going to platoon him with Casas. Maybe Yoshida, but Refsnyder can also do that...

Well it's not like Duval, O'Neill or even Duran are bastions of durability on the cusp of challenging Cal Ripken. I think the Sox can find adequate time for all five...

I have no issues with Rafaela, but if they bring in Taylor temporarily, they at least still have Rafaela if Taylor simply washes out. Or gets hurt. Is having this level of depth such a bad thing? It's not like Taylor - a Gold Glover himself - is a guy you need to tart if you bring him on board? I actually like Duvall over Taylor, but he is not without his issues either. But if they do bring in Duvall, it still could push Rafaela down to Worcester...

So you’re saying he has mastered the strike zone? And we can ignore his 3.6:1 K:BB in the minors? And his 7:1 K:BB in the majors?

Not til Friday at the earliest. The Sox can’t play the “well player A declined so we should avoid player B.” Especially not on 1-2 year deals. I’m sure that logic wouldn’t fly if the Sox decided “David Price didn’t work out so we need to avoid Blake Snell.” And in that case, it actually makes more sense. Also if Taylor goes into decline, you still have Rafaela. There’s no law that Taylor has to keep playing…

One is an established major leaguer. The other - not somuch. Also Taylor can provide that missing RH bat. And it’s likely for just 1-2 years. Not like Rafaela would need to convert to pitching to get on the field…
