    Of course getting more Ks than TBs is easy to do. The other ones (more triples than Ks, more HRs than singles) are hard. More HRs than Ks is also hard. But probably been done a few times. Joe DiMaggio’s career totals were very close for HRs and Ks, so he probably did it a few times…

    Well no one predicted anything. The suggestion was a bad pitching contract if the Sox were to deal Yoshida. I named a few bad pitching contracts, eliminated the two where the other team took on money, and a third because I don’t see Houston giving up on Hader so quickly. That left Rodon as the one that made the most sense for both teams, albeit only financially for NY. While unlikely the Yankees do it, players do get moved to save a helluva lot less than $53mil quite often. Luis Arraez a couple days ago, for example. Of course it’s really a baseball discussion. For a guy who spends a lot of time on a baseball board, you sure do hate baseball discussions…

    Maybe. Maybe not, although it clears a lot of money for them. They do have other ugly deals they’d probably prefer to move first, like Stanton. And I don’t know how happy they really are with Rodon, who has only pitched about 107 IP for them so far, and doesn’t have a real strong history that suggests he is going to get miraculously heathy as he ages. Given the chance, I would not be surprised if they moved on from him…

    Yeah he was one of the guys I IDd on BDC as a good fit for the Sox. Then he wanted some extension he clearly was not going to live up to, although the numbers today would probably get you a utility infielder...

    One thing that might be rarer is a player with more home run than singles. McGwire and Bonds both accomplished that feat in their record-setting home run seasons. McGwire actually did it multiple times. But not sure if anyone else did....

    Don't you think some of those other teams have also scored against non-pitchers? It might be unfair to penalize the Sox for something multiple teams have done this year. For example, Oakland put 20 runs on the Marlins last week, including a few against Emmanual Rivera, normally a third baseman. Arizona put a couple runs up against some 4th string shortstop on the Giants back in April. I assume a few other teams have as well...

    Actually the one deal that makes the most sense for both teams would be Yoshida for Rodon. The cost of keeping/benching or releasing Yoshida is about the same as the cost of trading him for Rodon. Yoshida would cost about $55.8mill if they just released him (minus the league minimum if he signs after clearing waivers, and he will clear waivers). Assuming no money changed hands (not always a good assumption), taking on Rodon's deal means they take on an increase of $53.5mill. Fairly equal. The Yankees, on the other hand, save considerable cash not only in the salary but also with tax payments due to Yoshida's lower AAV. Boston takes on the AAV increase but can afford it. And Rodon probably only gives you 40 or so starts over the next 4 years, but those would be more beneficial than a benched/released Yoshida...

    Assuming it happened in the off-season, Yoshida would have 3 years $55.8mill left on his deal. Hader would have 4 years $76mill left. Tyler Anderson would have 1 year $13mill left. Ray has 2 years $50mill left, assuming he does not opt out after this missed season. I would guess the Angels would walk away from that deal, since Yoshida probably doesn't justify the cost. Seattle might not like it so much either. I can see pros and cons for them, so I assume they walk away. Houston might do it, especially if Pressly's $14mill option for '25 vests and if Hader continues to flounder. I can see the option vesting, but I think Hader will right himself somewhat. So it might come down to whether or not they simply want to cut some overhead. Rodon is owed about $111mill for the last 4 years. I'd just assume keep Yoshida... .

    The Sox have hit that .481 mark three times in the past decade, all three times coming in last place. Interestingly, they are the only 3 times since the league went to 3 divisions a team with a .481 winning percentage came in last place. (The 1991 Angels anthe 2005 Nationals did come in last with .500 records. The 1991 Angels came in last with a .500 record with 2 divisions per league.)
